wow, didnt expect my simple 1 line reply can trigger hardcore apple sheeps so much until write an essay to counter me bck laugh.gif

feeling so insecure huh? yaya you very smart i get it whistling.gif

btw im not gonna pay close to a thousand of ringgit a year to sync data across my phone, laptops, tablets etc, there are many free alternatives out there whistling.gif , but well i guess apple users are rich so they wouldnt mind paying so much for convenience whistling.gif , and also they seems to be short on EQ also laugh.gif

2TB storage let say SSD about RM300-500 one time.
With cloud storage 2TB is RM45 per month or RM540 per annum.

Let say you use for next 30 years, you will spend RM16k for subscription.
Meanwhile the physical storage you bought still RM300-500 (let say with lifespan of 10 years for physical storage), so RM500*3=RM1500.

So in 30 years, total cost for cloud storage is 10x higher.

Also note that physical storage /GB is cheaper over time but cloud storage service does not drop price over time (in fact may increase).

talk cock lah you. even the cheapest centOS server from vultr is USD2.5 a month. don't tell me it'll be cheaper if you host your own server using your home unifi.

then you gonna write the app that can sync with your own server without bugs? like as good as the native app? backup every new photo the instance you take it that kind of good. and deal with the maintenance whenever there is an os update? get out of here

if you're talking about offline back ups...... man we're not in 2009 anymore. this is why we pay RM50 a month for a family package to do real time automatic cloud back ups. imagine the time wasted everyday just to manually transfer your photos. from one place to another. you do it every week, risk of losing a week worth of photos if you lose your phone. even when you do it every week, it becomes a major hassle. can you do it religiously, non stop for 10 years?

Instead of paying rm600/year for Icloud storage like a sheep, this is what i do.
1. Buy a SSD.
2. Purchase Photo Transfer App at price of RM80 (lifetime subscription).
3. Whenever my storage is full (256 gb phone storage can last me for 2-3 years), I just need to transfer the photos & videos to SSD. No need to do this regularly, just once every few years.

There you, save yourself thousands of RM.

Frankly, I don't get why you are all arguing with each other. Each of you are right, and at the same time all also wrong together.

If money is an issue, go with whatever cheapest back up works for your needs. If you got money to spend, then go with whatever is most convenient for you to keep your data backed up.

However, going only 1 approach is often the stupidest thing you can do. The right thing to do is to have multiple back ups. If you back up to iCloud, you should also have it set up so its mirrored to be saved locally to a harddrive or another cloud provider.

The cloud should never be your primary fall back, you should always have a local copy with you.

Remember the adage of survival planning. Three is two, two is one and one is none. Always expect one of your avenues to fail.

No wonder people like TS is sheeples. What's next? Buy a Mercedes and pay for vroom vroom subs to drive past 120km/j instead of a potong zakar that can anytime tapow 150kmj?
*
Subscription makes sense for some things.

Like cloud storage, as it costs money to maintain the infrastructure. Storing in a stable cloud provider/company also gives peace of mind. Their infrastructure is robust and already have all the hardware failovers built into the cost. You don't have to worry about it at all.

Sure some here can roll out their own solution, but it will be prone to error/disaster. I've had hard drives suddenly stop working and nearly lost hundreds of gigabytes of memories, but luckily I have it backed up in multiple places. Took me some time to convince my wife that a bunch of portable hard drives is NOT a long term back up solution.

LOL, actually I had a bunch of portable hard disks with Syncthing for many years. Three copies in two different houses. Finally switched to Onedrive a few years back. Pricing wise similar, I still needed to replace hard disks regularly when I rolled my own sync solution. Not factoring in hardware or electricity. It was the convenience and Google ending their unlimited photos that decided it for me.

not always an option because cloud needs internet connection to work. especially when you travel and take lots of pics and vids, how to upload gigs of data using travel sim with very limited quota? hotel wifi also not always stable and fast enough for high res, large uploads. i ended up bringing my spare phone and use airdrop for backup.

lame advise. storage is cheap, you can put your so called 'important data' on as many storage as possible.
guess what, i still have my hdd from year 2009, it still working. i doubt that your so called 'important data' is in terabyte in space, unless we are talking about rare classic porn.
also flash storage are known to be more reliable as it more immune to dusts (storage media doesn't need to be fully sealed). problem is it just most people dont have good backup strategy, myself too but what the hell, i dont have important personal data anyway.

i dont say cloud storage is bad, it just the pricing is bad. rm8.50/month for 100gb of space? come on.

I use icloud to backup the most essential files excluding photos & videos. Subscribe 50GB for rm 3.90. Photos and videos are backup offline with hard disk backup. I use Google Photos as a secondary online backup for photos and videos.

Therefore no need to pay that much.

Like what silverhawk mentioned, there isn’t one approach for now and ever

One of the best iCloud feature is to help your non-tech savvy family especially your parent or wife who doesn’t know any of it and help to back it up and restore when needed

Myself still have a offline SSD to backup all the cloud storage, as you never know when incident will come

Just have look for the pros and cons and decide for yourself

iCloud is really quite premium.
If you can afford it, sure…

But I wouldn’t say the convenience of it is worth Rm480 a year.

The only time I feel iCloud is convenient is when you lose your phone and you want to restore it on another phone… which given my track record, I’m quite confident to say I don’t really need that.

Photos/videos stored in my phone aren’t that important for me. Not worth Rm480 a year to safeguard.

its a 1tb disk and it have been copied over another 2 hard disk as backups(offline). 2 backup enough for me.
i ordered 4tb ssd from aliexpress to be a backup for another hard disk lol, damn i should buy more lel laugh.gif

not to say all is good, previously i have another 1tb hard disk that is ridden with bad sectors (bit-rot probably), anyway is all video, can still play the video, just few seconds of the video is corrupted, transfer all the files to another hard disk, make a backup of it and i just done with it. anyway nearly all the content of the disk are pirated content, if all files is lost, i can still grab it from the cloudinternet anyway.
