i don't understand why people keep complaining phone storage not enough. dO YoU GuYs NoT hAve ClOuD SToRaGe?

i keep all my shit on my shitty 2021 128gb iphone with 2TB family icloud subscription (USD9.99 a month). every photo gets uploaded immediately. I never run of of space despite having thousands of full res videos.

and I never worry about losing my phone. if I did lose it, a restored iphone with all my data is in my hand within 2 hours.

That’s 50 ringgit every month, means 600 ringgit per year subscription.
I would think it is expensive.

i share with 3 family members. the alternative to insufficient memory is buying a large phone but it's not safe (lose your phone, lose your data) and also cumbersome to backup every day.

not wise also.. if you have kids and take videos everyday, 1TB phone also not enough. cloud storage basically unlimited.

i don't even need to, i wrote my own app and host it and free cloud storage upload back to my server. anytime also can restore. 8tb is dirt cheap to buy this days
*
congrats you genius. but most people value convenience. once i realize how convenient it is to use airpods (like pop up case, immediately gets connected via bluetooth), i never look at other brands anymore, despite having a cheaper price tag or better sound quality. the smooth user experience cannot be replaced. you gonna write a custom app and back up manually every day? not for me.

you speak like everyone knows how to write a custom app. i don't ever want to deal with the hassles like making sure it's working over time (despite ios updates), granting permission and maintenance of my own data storage. how sure are you that your back up file will work? and how optimized is the compression? apple spends billions on research and engineering. i'd gladly pay $10 a month for a solution that works.

Buy the cloud storage and you are on their mercy, they can increase price and you are virtually stuck with them.
And how confident are you that the storage content won’t be compromised?
Later your nude photo leak out. Hahaha
*
fappening happened because people used easy to guess passwords and 2FA wasn't a requirement back then. it's not icloud's fault. if it is, people would be bringing apple to courts.

ever noticed no more fappening happened after that? it's a lot more secured now.

Sorry noob here. I subscribe OneDrive and iCloud. But don’t know how to properly use. Normally I just upload it manually and then delete in the phone. How about auto sync? Is it auto delete photos inside the photo after uploaded into cloud server?
*
just turn on auto sync in your phone's settings. make sure you turn on auto back up also. so everything will be backed up, not just the media. for the photos and videos, your phone will automatically make them online only. your phone automatically download only when you want to view. then remove again when you've finished loading. no need to manually upload.

There may have auto upload/sync, but there shouldn't be auto delete after upload as of now, maybe in future they'll add auto delete after uploaded.
*
sure have auto delete la.. else no point moving online. one of the benedits is to save space, the other is back up. but technically not delete, it's called making the files online or offline. Offline means both your phone and cloud have it. online means only cloud.

can iphone backup to google?
planning to jump to apple fanboy soon, would like to sync the same backup instead of 2 different clouds
*
i've only used icloud for my iphone. too lazy to research on other solutions like dropbox or google drive. although icloud works on macbooks. i prefer to use dropbox for my macbook though. it's less important than my phone and I really like the smart sync feature that allows me to restore files to whichever version i like. it's also significantly faster than icloud.

Let say if I take the photo, then it will auto sync & backup into cloud, after that it will auto delete that photo inside the phone?
*
yes, although the right term is not delete. photos will still be clickable on your phone. but when you tap on it, only the low res version will show immediately, then wait 1~2 seconds for the full res to complete sync. when move to antoher photo, the high res version gets removed again.

Very dumb response sorry.

Imagine you take bunch of holiday photos. Then suddenly lost your phone.

How’s your script going to help you recover your photos? You gonna bring your laptop and storage to holiday also it it?

Cloud storage cannot be compared to physical storage. Cloud photos are stored instantly (if internet present)
*
maybe he is able to produce a script that is as good as the built-in icloud auto back up function leh? the software that apple spent millions if not billions to build. also, able to work with ios updates.

sad to say.... maybe it's user problem cos mine is okay. if media important, save it to photos then you can have a back up cos all photos are synced.

2TB storage let say SSD about RM300-500 one time.
With cloud storage 2TB is RM45 per month or RM540 per annum.

Let say you use for next 30 years, you will spend RM16k for subscription.
Meanwhile the physical storage you bought still RM300-500 (let say with lifespan of 10 years for physical storage), so RM500*3=RM1500.

So in 30 years, total cost for cloud storage is 10x higher.

Also note that physical storage /GB is cheaper over time but cloud storage service does not drop price over time (in fact may increase).
*
talk cock lah you. even the cheapest centOS server from vultr is USD2.5 a month. don't tell me it'll be cheaper if you host your own server using your home unifi.

then you gonna write the app that can sync with your own server without bugs? like as good as the native app? backup every new photo the instance you take it that kind of good. and deal with the maintenance whenever there is an os update? get out of here

if you're talking about offline back ups...... man we're not in 2009 anymore. this is why we pay RM50 a month for a family package to do real time automatic cloud back ups. imagine the time wasted everyday just to manually transfer your photos. from one place to another. you do it every week, risk of losing a week worth of photos if you lose your phone. even when you do it every week, it becomes a major hassle. can you do it religiously, non stop for 10 years?

Become a power user.
in tech era, equipe high-level software-skill is just like having superpower.

you even can do what average human cant even imagine.

just like becoming mutant.
this is become more and more real after the emerge of AI...
our mutant power level just tripple fold.

i'm a programmer i agree with you. now with chatgpt i code a lot faster than before. but you don't create everything yourself la.. the backup app is very complicated. you have to deal with schedules (cron?), conflicts, compression, different file types, then encryption, haven't even go into maintenance and debugging.. walao. I'd just pay USD10 a month and get a piece of mind. its USD3.33 per person when it's shared with 3 family members.

USD is American region pricing. It’s RM40 a month in Malaysia actually.

Can consider AppleOne subscription too because it comes with Apple Music (can switch from Spotify or YM. The bundle is pretty bang for buck.

I personally don’t like AM UI so I stick with just iCloud plan.
*
wow. apple one is RM78.9 / month. i didn't know. for RM40 more you get apple music + apple tv. i also wouldn't get it cos entertainment is non essential. real time back up is essential for me. the peace of mind is priceless. i don't worry about losing my phone anymore. just get a new one and you're good to go. at most lose a few thousand riggits. and I'd get the one with the lowest memory.

Instead of paying rm600/year for Icloud storage like a sheep, this is what i do.
1. Buy a SSD.
2. Purchase Photo Transfer App at price of RM80 (lifetime subscription).
3. Whenever my storage is full (256 gb phone storage can last me for 2-3 years), I just need to transfer the photos & videos to SSD. No need to do this regularly, just once every few years.

There you, save yourself thousands of RM.
*
what if you lose your phone? 2-3 years back up once means the last 2-3 years data gone. memories can't get back anymore even with all the $$ in the world.

The good memorable ones will be up on FB or IG already. Even if I save all the photos for the past few years, I had never look back at the photos. There’s literally tens of thousands of photos. Never bother.

different folks different strokes. i have a kid i look after and I wouldn't even wanna lose 1 sec of any footage. now she is 6 years old i regret not taking more videos when she was younger.

why i need to account electricity when my mass storage/backups are offline? also in this modern age, you are not limited to HDD, you have flash storage for cheap now. if manufacturer willing to give 5 years warranty, it mean that devices can lasts that long most of the time, you dont need to retire that in 1/2 years. you see backblaze report, they are having hdd that was used for close to 8 years, offline media can lasts even longer as long the disk cover remain fully sealed.
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-dr...ts-for-q1-2023/

anyway my important documents are less than 1GB honestly, i just used my free google storage for those. but if i want to have a backup of my not important files, i need at least 10TB, google want rm200/monthly for those? it will be hard time for me to consider.  smile.gif

anyway cloud storage are not meant for everyone, i feel it is expensive because i hardly utilize it.
*
You don’t have kids to take photos or videos that will eat up space. 10 mins video is close to 1gb already I think. If you don’t have real time automatic back up, you’re prone to losing weeks or months of contents. Phones get lost, water damaged, stolen.. and in my case, just died without a warning after 6 years. But thanks to iCloud, I did not lose anything. I got a cheap phone and have my phone restored exactly like it was 2 hours ago in minutes

Some people say they back up off line like once every week. Really? Can you do it religiously every week? People get busy and forget to do routine things like this. Paying a bit for cloud storage means we can take one thing off our mind and make life easier.

Anyway your files not important. Lose also never mind. Sure. But our stuff are invaluable memories.

My point is I don’t understand why people complain shit like 256gb phone is nOt EnOugHt memory. Like the better way is to store things in the cloud and not have everything offline

I was not looking for a 64gb iphone, but one was offered to me at harvey norman for rm800 (display unit 12 mini) , cant say no

using the 200gb cloud for rm12 a month, been good so far
*
Exactly. But sometimes also depending on some app size you use. If you’re a gamer, some apps cannot go onto the cloud. E.g. genshin impact’s size is like 30gb? So maybe install one or two more heavy games. Your phone is full. The OS itself also takes up like 15gb.

For me I don’t play any games so my iPad 64gb also enough.. only store some PDFs and view iCloud videos. This isn’t possible without iCloud.

But some people is like walao.. 256gb memory? Not enough.. these people sure don’t know what’s iCloud or other cloud storage
