Hai guys, lama tak buka tered pasal kereta. As some u know, I sold my old Suprima earlier. And had it replaced with an EV.

user posted image

Why EV/BYD Atto 3?

- Want something with similar characteristic as Suprima, big boot space, huge rear legroom, must have many features such as pano roof, AEB, lane keep, adaptive cruise etc etc

- Need to be powerful (over 160hp) yet with minimal maintenance

- I dont have any kampung to balik to, so no range anxiety, even if need to go for that maybe twice a year out of KL trips, can take other car

- To carry stuffs when needed, other cars at home boot too small to fit large item

user posted image

- Looked at competitors:

Honda HRV : 140k car with Honda City Interior, seats too firm, boot too small and CVT puik. Honda CRV: Too old

Mazda CX-30 : Cramped interior, Boot too small

Peugeot 3008/VW Tiguan : Not much features to play with, no adaptive cruise control, AEB etc etc

Ora Good Cat: Boot too small, slow charging.

CHARGING, How much does it cost?

- Over a month, I only driven 1535km

user posted image

And here is my home energy usage

user posted image
user posted image

Roughly RM 120++ for 1500km distance, this I set my wallbox charging app to count using TNB highest block electricity tariff. I also charge outside when I go mall to makan, charging outside is free, only pay for parking.

My fav is Sunway Velocity and Wangsa Walk

user posted image

Sounds cheap right? Actually is not, because to upgrade my house electricity (RCB/MCCB from 40amps to 63amps) since my house was from the 80's cost RM3.5k, the wallbox itself is free from BYD, but installation cost is Rm1.2k.

Where is the furthest you've ever driven it?

- Not far, furthest is from home to KLIA then straight to Seremban. then pusing2 seremban town. around 140-150km.. Battery left 70%

- Stayed at Royale Chulan Seremban, they allow 3 pin charging there. So plug in at night, next day checkout battery already fully charged, again... Free of Charge

So yeah, this is my experience with EV now. Feel free to ask anything in regards to EV or even the car itself. Ill answer it truthfully, unbiased based on my personal POV.

QUOTE(NO1K @ Jun 19 2023, 04:07 AM)
if u can choose again, hybrid or fulll ev?

Have you tried to sleep in it while turning on AC? This is the only advantage for me to travel around.

Since it's only been a month, can't feel battery degradation yet?

I found BYD designs are always at least 5 years backwards, how do you like the designs?
*
if its my only car, maybe hybrid (actually dont like hybrid, see 330e,a6 hybrid, c350e so many issues). But since my house got few other cars to use, then I would still go for full EV.
Take full advantage of the tax free status, free roadtax, currently most ev charging station at malls are not at full utilized so easy parking in malls, and get tax rebate on home charger..

Yes, that is also one of the reason I chose EV, because while waiting for people can sleep in the car with AC on, tried, no issues

BYD Design is considered safe design to me, not too offensive but not too boring either.

Battery degradation wise, I have been following BYD owners group Thailand, over there got Atto 3 already travel 160k km, but less than 5%

1. How long do you intend to keep the EV before selling?
2. Insurance include perils coverage?
3. What is this house amp? Is normal 3 phase enough? Cannot use existing electric setup?
4. How long does it take to charge? Looks like cost is half of petrol.
5. Does charging time affect your schedule? Need to hunt for EV bays? Need to queue? Since you mentioned need to sleep in car. Do you have dependents/running errands?
6. How much does battery replacement cost?
7. Battery degradation <5 years for Thailand in a year? That is steep really.
8. How much is the service cost? How much does the major service cost? Average cost of service for 200k km mileage? For me it is RM1.1K average until 200k km.

Looking at the car budget there, you could actually get a fairly recent used sorento/sportage diesel. But then used car la. First time using diesel, I like it.

Like you, I am an ex suprima owner 2013. Sold 2017 for RM42K. Bought a Kia Sorento UM diesel. 7 seat SUV. My fuel cost is half of suprima. Full tank Euro 5 diesel RM140. I get 750km in town. I refuel full tank every 6 weeks town driving. I drive everyday, though the distance is about 20+km. Long distance, I get 900+ km. If I stick to speed limit and like 90 km, can pass 1000 km range. I have to do long distance balik Kampung few times a year. Kota Bharu - Batu Pahat/Kuala Pilah. Only half tank used. Suprima, need to refuel halfway.  Since I am in Kota Bharu, there are only 2 free public charging stations in KB. Nothing anywhere else in Kelantan. EV for my case will not work, unless distance exceeds 1000km due to the long distance travel. Also this is my only car. Good all rounder.
*
1. Probably around 10 years

2. Yes. Insurance cost the same as regular car

3. Most houses are single phase, they recommend if u have more than 3 airconds should upgrade to 3 phase, my house have 6 airconds but only 3 airconds running most of the time, wanted to upgrade to 3 phase but macam kena con by electrician saying will cost 8-10k to upgrade, i checked other people less than 4k can kawtim already, 3 phase also good if u have plan to install solar panel later as suruhanjaya tenaga limits the capacity of solar if u only use single phase

4. If from empty which usually never the case, since u can plug in every day. Should take around 8 hours. But for me I like to charge when the battery gets to 60%. And the wallbox can set the ampere on how fast to charge, maximum is 32 amps. I usually set under 10amps since i dont need it to charge quickly. Thus reducing the load of my house electricity

5. Totally not, i most of the time charge at home only. Outside charging only when i find a free one. The sleep in car part is because I usually send my family members for them to run their errands, so instead of following them, I just stay in the car enjoy aircond and watch netflix on the big centre screen

6. No clue how much, but all i know is very easy to total loss the car if accident, once hit the battery pack insurance will consider beyond economic repair, thus why taking agreed value insurance very important

7. No idea on this, 5% for 160k km travelled seems very low to me. My suprima almost 10 years when I sold it the mileage was less than 130k km

8. This also no idea, the first inspection service at 5k km is free, the next service is every year or 20k km whichever comes first. Got someone in byd club malaysia service 20k km kena rm300.

List of service item is just aircond cabin filter, reduction gear oil, brake fluid and coolant

P/S: managed to sell the Suprima for 16k only

How would you compare the drive and handling to an ICE car? Insta torque enjoyable?

Did they give you a service schedule? It should be less times than ICE IINM.
*
Unlike other EV, this BYD is setup to mimic a regular ICE car. So no fast acceleration feeling unless u enter sport mode..

Handling wise, its so so so damn comfortable when driving normally, lalu pothole also no feel, my passengers everytime naik kereta will fall asleep... but its a typical china car setup, cannot take corner one body roll quite heavy and lifeless overassisted steering feel. It feels stable though coz the battery pack is on the floor.. It feels similar as my family bmw g28 330Li, a China market car. Heck, i tested on Suke highway, the bmw rolls even more than the BYD

No given service schedule, based on current owner feedback, first service at 5k km is free, then next service is every 20k km or 1 year, need to pay but dunno how much

What is the best feature in your car?

What is the most useless feature in your car?
*
Best

- super duper clear 360 camera
- adaptive cruise control with stop n go, very stress free in the jam, on a 300k bmw this needs to be retrofitted outside and will cost almost 20k to do it
- very nice sounding stock audio system, beats the hell out of stock BMW audio
- phone app to control the car lock unlock start on aircond, on a bmw all these need to pay subscription to access, this one free
- V2L feature means can go camping bring all electrical items, car becomes a giant powerbank
- centre screen is essentially an android tablet with play store, can watch netflix YouTube disney+ etc etc

So far no useless features yet, but i turned off lane departure warning though. Very annoying, unlike german car that just vibrates the steering, this car damn loud beeping siren

U mean u can switch on the aircon n screen while charging n engine is off? Can do this for 6 to 8 hours if at camping?
Are the seats comfortable for sleeping, at least recline by 60deg?
*
Yes can. But the LED DRL will be on so might blind others when doing so

QUOTE(red_satu @ Jun 19 2023, 07:03 AM)
Hopefully Loke gets to fine-tune the road tax structure before the exemption ends. Though the Atto3 should be RM903 based on current Tax structure. Boy96 willing to pay?
*
I am confident it wont go that high lah. Even if it is, its still cheaper than my current peugeot maintenance of couple of thousands in repair every other month

QUOTE(Quantum Geist @ Jun 19 2023, 07:07 AM)
infotainment laggy or not? still have physical buttons or everything is touchscreen?

Very responsive almost ipad like, for an android based head unit. Almost everything is controlled by the touchscreen unfortunately

Yeah need to step pedal or flick switch

QUOTE(I-Kurosaki @ Jun 19 2023, 07:50 AM)
is it true BYD owners have higher tendency to ajak drag race at traffic light?

Jokes aside, how's the acceleration from zero? What kind of car comes close (to its acceleration trait)?

Also not mentioned if yours is SR or ER, but looks like ER from the rims. Range given is 420km based on WLTP. If you have measured, what would be the energy consumption or total range for different speed range, i.e. at 90km/hr, 110km/hr, 130km/hr and 150km/hr?

What's your current view on the DC chargers availability, reliability, user experience and cost for outstation travel, and especially north of KL like KL-PNG? From observation, KL-JHR route has relatively higher number of DC chargers, and severely lack of charging facilities for interstate travel considering the number of EVs on the road.
*
Actually BYD drag race at traffic light is the worse, the throttle response is not instant, a myvi confirm will smoke it the first few meters upon green light coz u know how sensitive myvi throttle pedal is. But yes manage to do 0-100 in around 7seconds-ish

It is ER, I have not measured the consumption but I was told anything above 120km/h really drains the battery badly

KL - JHR no problem, to Penang theres no charger in between KL and Tapah, after that there is Simpang Pulai but its too expensive at rm4/minute, to east coast definitely lacking charger, but still possible to arrive in kuantan without charging lah or just 10 minutes stop at Gambang. But its not possible to use Gua Musang

QUOTE(DarkNite @ Jun 19 2023, 07:57 AM)
Awesome info! Thanks.
Can't wait for more review when you do the 20k service.
*
Have to wait next year coz my mileage very low one

QUOTE(MegaCanonF @ Jun 19 2023, 07:58 AM)
nice read. thanks for sharing  . I have a couple of questions TS

1. when left charging, is it possible for theft ? how is the security of the car

2. you will consider using this car until when?

3. how is the service centre/ maintenance experience?
*
1. No, the charging cable is locked to the car when charging

2. 10 years

3. From other owners they say no issues, done quite fast since actually nothing to be serviced, just inspection

QUOTE(LemonHoneyIce @ Jun 19 2023, 08:11 AM)
So far is it difficult for you to find charging port in the city? Or usually able to drive whole day till night time only charge?
And also the risk of people tampering the charging using 3 pin like you show above, feel not so safe.
That's my concern of EV currently cuz the facilities still very new and scarce
*
In KL very2 easy to find charge port. Just download the app called Plugshare to see where is the nearest charging location, but for me no use lah all those charge port since can just go back home to charge

If using 3 pin the cable will still lock to the car when charging, but theres a possibility someone turn off the switch lah

QUOTE(damonlbs @ Jun 19 2023, 08:11 AM)
how much to install charger at home...?
*
Already mentioned, rm1.2k for installation only

Tyre and wind noise usually comes in above 120km/h, but i find this car aircon heat pump /compressor noise quite loud so not much difference than engine noise

QUOTE(maxpudding @ Jun 19 2023, 08:50 AM)

QUOTE(knwong @ Jun 19 2023, 08:54 AM)
Your tire is meant for EV?

I know you haven't change it but how much is the retail price?
*
Nope, for BYD they are using regular tyres, not an EV specific tyres, and as of now the size 215/55/18 still no EV tyres produced for it

QUOTE(andrekua2 @ Jun 19 2023, 08:58 AM)

Need to change brake fluid. This car regen braking is quite minimal, not very strong at all compared to other EV

if not how much is a charger ?
*
Yes, I was given a free 22kW wallbox, despite the car and my house only support single phase. Which means in the future if I want to upgrade to 3 phase car/house wiring, can use back same wallbox

If have to buy the charger cost around rm4-6k

QUOTE(sihamsedap @ Jun 19 2023, 09:29 AM)
welcome to EV
been driving more than a year already

ur byd can go outstation easily, u need to try it to overcome any range anxiety u have.. many byd members travel to thai, really envy them bachelors lol..

going down south is a lot easier, almost every 50-100km got dcfc, no worries

eastcoast is doable too if u know where to charge/plan etc.
*
Yup, but for now Im not willing to change my driving style and trouble myself along the highway, coz the other car im already used to driving 160km/h average all the way yet still able to get around 700km+ for a full tank. Definitely not possible on current EV's

3) insurance premium - for your brand new car, what is the comparable new ICE vehicle in terms of premium paid? Is there any loading for EV since batteries are vulnerable in a serious accident as you mentioned?

4) does the car drive like a regular ICE car? Would you be comfortable lending it to someone who has never driven an EV, or handing over to the tyre shop mechanic for alignment test drive?
*
1) Yes

2) Yes

3) its the same as other 170k normal petrol car, no extra loading charges whatsoever

4) yes for BYD, they designed it so that it feels like a regular ICE car.

Always curious about these new gen EV cars :  blush.gif
1. Is there difference in RCB/MCCB 40amps vs 63amps aside from charging speed? i assume its like mobilephone fast vs normal charging
2. So far how is resale value / depreciation like compare to non EV ? Retail vs sell price
3. if more people buy EV, meaning charging bays at malls /public places will be unavailable most of time?
4. I heard the fast charging areas in petrol stations are available, but the usage price is not cheap vs petrol ?
5. Also heard that EV battery should not charge above 80% to preserve the life and reduce degradation ?
6. The own charger/cables at public places 3pin plug, can be stolen easily i assume (example pic below from TS) ?
7. saw roadshow for ATTO3 in 1utama, what is difference between STANDARD (rm150K) vs EXTENDED (rm168K)?
8. any discounts or freebies given during purchase ?

blush.gif

*
1. 40 amps definitely cannot because the charger already using 32amps, u only have 8 amps left to power your house, thats why need 63 amps

2. Dont have that data yet, there is a used 2019 nissan leaf for sale for rm90k, new car that time cost around 150-160k iinm? But the leaf is a very inferior EV that tends to overheat its batteries since theres a design flaw which it doesnt have enough cooling.

3. Chicken and egg situation, but for now more and more chargers is being installed as more ev's are on the road

4. Correct, fast charging in Malaysia is expensive, almost Singapore price. So its actually cheaper to fast charge in Singapore than in Malaysia. So no more funny humping action from Singaporeans when they charge in Malaysia

5. That is recommended for NCM battery EV, for BYD and other EV with LFP chemistry batteries, can charge to 100% everytime no problem.

6. The 3 pin can be turned off and unplugged, but the car is locked so the cable is also locked to the car so no chance of theft

7. Can refer to BYD website, main difference is battery size, fast charging speed, power boot, pm2.5 air purifier, wireless charging, RGB ambient lighting, rim size, number of speaker. The rest all the same

8. Free V2L cable and wallbox. No diskaun.

Obviously the cost lol, the base/middle spec ioniq5 is not worth the price, the top spec is over budget at 300k++ already

Btw the korean use regular ncm battery which means cannot charge to 100% everytime like the BYD Blade LFP battery

Yes. I just checked its rm1.3k actually. But usually newer homes no need the 3.5k upgrade

I install it thru Sime Darby company installer. Mine they gave the 22kW 5 meter cable, but its rm1.3k because house is single phase, if 3 phaae house then its rm1.7k to install

adui Why got ppl wondering if can drive whole day in kl without charging? On full charge the car can go 400km.

Do u even drive 400km a day in KL? Jus treat it like ur phone, reach home u charge la. Or else jus charge every 2 days
*
For this ah, actually 400km city drive very hard to achieve. Maybe 300+ can lah, really have to drive like a granny to obtain 400km

lithium ion battery best kept at 40-60%,.. the least chemical pressure,..

From the BYD owners manual

Fully charging the vehicle is
recommended at a regular basis (at least
once a week), and fully charge it from a
low battery (<10% SOC) once every three
to six months.

If you have to to long distance for example to Penang, will you drive EV or normal petrol car?

Maybe in future if you do to long distance trip with your EV, can update us on the experience here
*
Maybe can try once la to experience. But i still prefer to take petrol car there because i have no patience to stick to the speed limit on highway. The BYD top speed is already less than what my usual petrol car average highway cruising speed is

Many stop to charge for convenience purpose like go makan or prayers. 10-15 mins top up for additional 150km or so

Anyways do join the myevoc fb group if you haven’t.

Not worth it to do grab unless u have a under rm50k EV with 400km range.

initially wanted to trade in Ativa for Atto 3

but wife heavily disagree with it because of interior not to her liking

then see Ora Cat..okay2 but boot space similar to Ativa so mcm not worth the change

so now need to wait n see Omoda EV end of this year, she fond the design ICE Omoda 5.

hopefully it pass wife expectation.

Good to know TS change to EV and lucky you stayed Landed hence can do the wallbox, i stay at low cost highrise so less chances to install any wallbox.

Hopefully the ministry that is currently drafting the guideline for installing charger at highrise make it done quicker, many condos management still waiting for the new guidelines
