England given Terry boost
QUOTE
England have received a huge boost with the news that captain John Terry has been cleared to play against Russia on Wednesday.

The Chelsea skipper missed the weekend clash with Estonia due to a knee injury picked up in training last week.

Now after coming through sessions on Monday and Tuesday in Moscow, England's medical staff have cleared Terry to play.

Terry is now set to return to the starting XI at the expense of Sol Campbell, who replaced him against Estonia.

Fully fit

"Yes, I'm fully fit," confirmed Terry.

"My knee had sort of locked up, I think a bit of bone or cartilage was floating about and then it swelled up. With massage it has managed to dislodge itself."

Operation

It was revealed, however, that Terry would require a minor operation on his knee in the near future.

"I will have to have an operation in the near future, it is just a question of when.

"We will have to remove that bit of floating bone. I will be back playing in a week after the op I am told."

Terry admits his side are looking back to 2003 when England went to Turkey and claimed a goalless draw to seal a place at Euro 2004.

"I think we can emulate the Istanbul team," Terry said. "To do it over here will be a great achievement.

"It is going to be tough place. There will be a very hostile crowd and they will be a very different team to the one we beat last month. They are going to be pumped up after getting beat at Wembley."

English heroes

Terry also admitted he wants his side to kick-off what could be a great week for English sport, with the Rugby Union team in the World Cup final on Saturday, and Lewis Hamilton in position to claim the Formula One world title on Sunday.

"It is a challenge for us but hopefully we can do the right thing and get the right result and then it is down to the rugby boys and Lewis Hamilton.

"It starts with us and hopefully we can get the job done.

Terry blow for England
QUOTE
John Terry's involvement in England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia has been thrown into major doubt.

The centre-back, who had only just been passed fit for the clash, locked his knee in Tuesday afternoon's training and now looks certain to miss the vital encounter.

The Chelsea man was absent from the weekend clash with Estonia due to a knee injury picked up in training last week.

However, he had been given the green light to play after coming through sessions on Monday and Tuesday morning in Moscow.

But Steve McClaren has now confirmed that Terry is almost certainly out of Wednesday's game after failing to come through the afternoon session unscathed.

"John Terry is almost certainly ruled out of tomorrow's match. His knee locked towards the end of training and he could not complete the session," he said.

Sol Campbell is likely to replace Terry in the heart of the England defence after starting alongside Rio Ferdinand in Saturday's 3-0 win over Estonia.

You shouldn't risk the player if he is not fit. He might suffer from a reaction by forcing himself to play in this game. Moreover in a plastic pitch. A nation such as England should have the depth in the squad to carry out without their captain.

That kind of talk doesn't inspire the players cause it sounds like the manager is desperate. It doesn't show that the manager has the charisma or leadership to lead the team. If he needs a hero then maybe he should ask Hiro Nakumara. Yataaaa!!!! rolleyes.gif

why Lescott is chosen ahead of Neville? does Russia pose a physical threat? the only rasional explanation that i could think of is Lescott is good in the air and has a physical attribute..

i think Russia is gonna see this left side as England's weakness..expect a lot of Russian assault on the left hand side..

Dude, this is England thread....what Tevez & Saha? laugh.gif

It seems Lescott will get the nod ahead of Phil/Shorey to replace Ashley Cole that unless something happen else that probably will be the back four for 2nite.

Phil doesn't look comfortable playing as LB when he did that for some of the past England games. The only advantage he has over both Lescott & Shorey is his experience.

Russia did targeted the right side at Wembley where SWP was exposed defensively so I think they might do it again.

I believe this is the England national talk. How come debating over Utd forward lineup over here. hmm.gif

I think Mcclown will play 5 across midfield because the nature of the game at stake. I think he should stick with the last eleven that did okay in the last 2 games. Apart replacing A.Cole that is injured at the moment.

Yeap. I think they should stick with the same lineup, with the exception of replacing the injured A.Cole.

Russia v England preview

QUOTE
England can clinch a place in the finals of Euro 2008 if they secure three points against Russia on Wednesday, in a game which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 from 3.30 pm.

Manager Steve McClaren has steered England to five consecutive 3-0 successes in qualifying Group E and another maximum point haul against Russia in Moscow would see supporters begin the search for affordable accommodation in Austria and Switzerland next summer.

Russia, though, are in desperate need of the points as they bid to keep their own qualification hopes alive and they are unlikely to roll over in the style of their 3-0 defeat in September's Wembley meeting between the two sides.

Much has been made of the Luzhniki Stadium's plastic pitch which will host the crucial clash, but McClaren remains his confident self and is focused on his team.

Positive

McClaren persistently pushes positive thinking, but he will have been rocked by the likely injury enforced absence of his captain John Terry and he will definitely be without Ashley Cole.

Terry had been passed fit to play against Russia, having missed the Estonia game, but the defender's troublesome knee locked in training on Tuesday and he is rated as a major doubt with Sol Campbell again ready to deputise.

Cole damaged his ankle against Estonia following a defensive mix up with Joleon Lescott, who could be in line to replace the absent Chelsea full-back.

Lescott, who played out the majority of the second-half against Estonia at left-back following Cole's early exit, could be in line to start his first game for his country but McClaren must decide between the Everton defender, his experienced club colleague Phil Neville or Reading's Nicky Shorey.

Formidable

Frank Lampard is expected to be forced to settle for a place on the bench once again as Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry continue to form a formidable central midfield partnership, while Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney should maintain an attacking spearhead.

Meanwhile, Russia manager Guus Hiddink is determined to secure the three points for his side.

Hiddink recently agreed a new contract to keep him in control of the Russian reins until the 2010 World Cup, but the Dutchman knows anything less than a win would provide him with an uphill task in securing a finals appearance before that tournament.

Russia will be missing first choice winger Vladimir Bystrov and fellow midfielder Ivan Saenko, but they have no other major concerns as they plot a frosty reception for England.

I think he must be shaking in his pants now with the pressure from the Russian game. My foot that he relish this challenge when he called for his player to be heroes. If England struggle to get past this group I don't see them winning the competition next summer. If they qualify the most they will do is make the Q-Final with McClown on the helm of England.

And that is due to talents in the team. Nothing to do with his 'great' management or tactical skills wink.gif

It is down to the player talent to pull it through. I think that English FA have to look themselves in the mirror with the selection of the English manager. It has been a farce with the past few manager that has manage England. They should get someone that can offer to drop down big star player and select player based on their ability not on because they are a superstar for their clubs. England miss the chance when they should get Scolari.
