Beckham should be the captain again... look at his passion towards football.. he's willing to go the miles playing for AC Milan and facing all the stabs from his own teammates from Galaxy team just to be able to prove he's capable of another World Cup...

he's best candidate to me... Rooney is good no doubt, however his temperament won't earn him respect in the long run, at least not now where WC is around the corner...

if Beckham ain't getting the armband then Gerrard should be... but definitely NOT Rio Ferdinand... i dun recall he done any great stuffs wif England team... he's tough... but giving commands for the Three Lions? no way...

Not sure what's the obsession with Beckham. He'll be on the bench at most.

Well Rio had issues in the past. He missed one Euro tournament through his missed drug test. But he's been consistent since for club and country.. rated as one of the best CBs around although his form for England in his last few appearances haven't exactly been stunning.

Thought the captaincy was taken away by Capello?

He offer resignation, but still up to Capello to decide whether to accept it or keep him as captain what.

My personal point of view is that if it doesn't affect stuff on the footballing side of things, Terry should remain as captain. Obviously with the media witch hunt going on that wasn't going to happen. They will keep on writing those shit stories about him till they seen him out from the squad/lose his captaincy which would bring unwanted attention to their preparations for the WC.

Even Gerrard had personal problems. Rio ain't no saint either, but like you said it's all in the past while JT is still fresh although it happens long ago(how long ago we don't know, but one things for sure it's hot right now).

I don't want Rooney to be the captain for now. He's still young and he doesn't need the burden of being captain or the distraction it brings. He should just focus on his game.

I have to disagree with you there Wan. I believe a captain need to the leader both on and off field. Someone who other players can look up to on field, as well as someone who the players respect outside in the world. If it's all about footballing stuff....Gary Neville hasn't been exactly great for United this season, does that mean he should be stripped of captaincy? Besides, the affair is involving Wayne Bridge, as a result now one of the England international might wanna quit the country, isnt that footballing side of things?

Of course both Gerrard and Rio is not all clean, heck even Rooney visited prostitutes before. That's what makes the new captain issue more debatable. If there's a player like Giggs in the team i believe there will be more agreement on the replacement laugh.gif Lampard is a relatively "clean" person but as u guys said he isn't captain material...

Just my opinion in a healthy debate icon_rolleyes.gif

If it affects the footballing side so bad, Terry would be axed from the squad and never be pick again. Yet he's only stripped of his glorified armband. That shows it's not that big of a problem. Only between Terry and Bridge, and the press of course. He would still be a confirm starter unless his performances for Chelsea drop big time.

If Terry still commands the respect of the others, there should be no problem. One person is hurt, and morally it ain't right what Terry did. But that's between those two to sort it out. And we don't really know the real story of how it happened.

Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole had fights before. Yet they stayed on playing with us for a few seasons. Of course the issue regarding Terry and Bridge is entirely different, but if Bridge can't think what's best for England, he should not get picked for England anyway for his selfish reasons, even if his pride is hurt.

Before rio got injured, he's been in quite terrible form. But it should be either him or Steven Gerrard. Becks stepped down as a captain lastime, so i doubt he would get the armband again and since he's not a regular in team too.

It just shows outside stuff of football don't matter much in judging players unless it directly involve their performances on the pitch and the team. Rio, Gerrard was picked as vice and third captain respectively before that. They get promoted now. Both have played big part for their club and both have perform for England. Outside of those there, there's no other suitable candidate.

Personally, I think...If I were to pick captain, it would be between Beckham and Gerrard.

Is Rio a good captain? Nope.I don't think so. He doesn't seems to have the passion Beckham, Gerrard, Rooney or Lampard have for Three Lions.

Would be great if Beckham get back the captaincy.Gerrard is ok but I think Beckham is still a better choice. As for Rooney, I can see his passion for Three Lions which is very very important for a team leader. The problem is, he is young, inexperienced for captaincy and his temper is another problem. Lampard or Barry will be good too...Good , commanding, experienced skipper...

My choice:

Beckham>Gerrard>Lampard>Barry>Rooney>Rio>
