this is my status..sometime i can get -48 dBm RSSI

Network Provider maxis
Network Type HSDPA
RSSI -57 dBm
RSCP -60 dBm
Ec/Io -3 dB

P/S: did u guys realize that when there is no internet activity(idle) , your connection become UMTS??? and auto to HSDPA when internet activity started.....this started to happen 2-3 days ago...

I was just wondering why everyone cares about the speed result tested at speedtest.net instead of the actual download speed.

Maxis automatically kicks you to UMTS to conserve their resources. A cell tower can support up to 15 HSDPA users. So if the system detects you are using the Internet , it automatically allocates a HSDPA Slot !

Below is a screenshot of the E620/220 tool firmware which is an alternative to connect to Maxis.
Using this version, you can actually locate the best signal location at your home. The best I could achieve is at -61dBm. But I conclude that anything below -65dBm is good enuff as is almost equivalent to the location's best speed +/- 10%. Please note that you need to wait for about a 30 seconds or so in order for it to display the actual signal strength before moving the E220 to another location for test.

I think we can now officially praise Maxis for the good performance lately.

right on. I've stop using speedtest as well as all we wanted is how fast the d/l speed is for our torrent, http or ftp.

I donno how and why but i just downloaded a torrent file that is 350MB size completed in 3 hours from 1.30 pm - 4.30 pm.. maximum speed i could get was 100kbps.. but constant speed was around 60-70kbps.. Using BitComet..

I am so surprised brcause they said p2p is blocked by Maxis but i am really happy with Maxis Broadband now, it's far better compared to my Streamyz 88 package.

Surfing speed is enjoyable, loading YouTube without waiting a single seconds..

I am using USB modem btw.. and using it in my 3rd floor apartment around Pandan Indah..

Hmm, I just subscribed Maxis Broadband and now I'm at Shah Alam Seksyen 7. Connection is like rollercoaster. With -90dB RSSI, I only can archive 150kbps, and sometimes my connection will be kicked out to EDGE.

I'm wondering, if we make complaint to Maxis due bad signal at our area, will they come and improve it?

How do you guys could get the RSSI so low?

My modem is mounted outside my window, I only get 75 - 85.

And how to look for the location of the base station/cell tower? I'm at Bandar Menjalara, Kepong, anyone from there? Do you know?

I'm there too, the base station should be the one next to the sunway SPK Villa Manja construction site. Opposite the Telekom building.

LOL.... "ZTE mounted outside the window" !!! hmm.gif Wow... shakehead.gif

OK, thanks, I'll have to chage the location of the modem then.

Not on the window, but on the wall just outside my window.

to aiman04: Using parabolic? U need to get below -70dBm for fast and stable connection. I've seen some complaining about getting discon from MSN and stuff but to be honest, i've not experiencing it at all.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night when i was testing my newly made parabolic (made out of pringles tube), i manage to get -56dBm and the speed boosted from 750kbps to 1.6Mbps (i'll swallow my own quote below for being wrong blush.gif ). Unfortunately it didn't last for more than 5 minutes. Maybe it is due to my current antenna design which is a bit doggy and requires to more work. I'm thinking of buying one off the shelf. Anyone can recommend where i can get this? Izzit available at LY plaza? I've seen it b4 but not for the HSDPA signal.

Maybe because your HSDPA slot has been occupied. I read some threads that you can have some background program running on auto-ping every 1 minute to avoid idle state but not sure if it works. I'm currently outstation but will post some pics once i'm back.

Interesting discovery JWCheah. Thanks.

I think I've seen a signal booster at LY, but not sure is it to boost your own router's signal or for the modem.

This is how my connection sucks at

Network Provider maxis
Network Type UMTS
RSSI -84 dBm
RSCP -90 dBm
Ec/Io -6 dB

Runnng Starter Package. Any Idea how to improve the RSSI? I literally hang the modem outside my balcony now.. Kinda look stupid. If things arent going well in 3 days i'm gonna terminate and hop back to Streamyx.. -.-"

Its normal , whenever it detects nobody is using the Internet , it will hop back to UMTS. It will convert back to HSDPA , when it sees a sudden burst of DATA..aka whenver you try to download something big. If it still fails , that means your HSDPA slot has been occupied
