Iinm last time we parking at border there only need passport and rm2 to go thru.. then use cab to hotel. Can't remember restaurant name but their tom yum gong really out of this world even nice than we try at BKK wan.. another one is otak2 babi. A bit pricier but really nice.. Very important that you return the Thai Customs documents (for your car) upon exit of Thailand. This is not to be confused for the white immigration card that you filled together with your passport.

Failing to do so would mean that Thai authorities would consider your can has not left Thailand & upon your next car entry into Thailand, the Thai Customs will fine (saman) you for the total number of days your car has "not exit" Thailand.

At road block, most important document is the Thai Customs document as it shows you have legally brought in your Msian car.

Similarly, if rented car, the rental agreement.

Validity according to your passport visa, not your driving license valid date.

Thai police knows that ASEAN drivers license is recognized. Just need to be courteous, smile & speak English slowly with them.

The walk from padang besar station to the immigration is about 1 hour

1) Driver license and Certificate of Ownership/reg card of your vehicle. You will need it to buy insurance.

2) Stayed at Centara, Lee Garden, Crystal and Buri Sriphu.

My recommendation is Centara and Buri Sriphu.

I tend to stay at Centara hotels all over Thailand fairly often as the quality tends to be fantastic for the price, 4* price but 5* service levels. Spa not that good though.

Buri, impressive hotel though it’s restaurant is Thai food only which wasn’t a problem for me as I do like Thai food more than Malaysian foods anyway. Used to have a very nice spa.

The rest? Lee Garden is good if you want to be where all the action is… and your sole purpose to Hatyai is to satisfy your libido.

3) Massage, eat, massage, go to Songkla if you’re into beaches, massage, massage, live bands and shows, massage and hope no bombs go off. But seriously there isn’t anything to do in Hatyai other than use it as a stopover.

4) It depends what you’re after but my advise is to just keep going and only stop for fuel.

for hotels, i would recommend newer built hotels over those lee garden/ centara.. there are many such as the three, the lantern, new season square(not the old new season)...

prep pills, prevent HIV.

Hatyai as far as I can remember was a trading post. So it's a place for makan, buy stuff like consumables, get stuff if you plan to travel further, mischievous rendezvous to get your rocks off. My family never did much there. Usually will go to Trang or Krabi for more activities

i was there for 2 days, felt kinda bored.

Only thing special was the food. Thats all.

We can get Thai Massage here in Msia too.

Even the Thai travel agent told me there is nothing special in Hatyai.

I went to H&M hatyai and the prices is so much cheaper compared to here.

I bought a few shirts, costs only 120 baht,so much cheaper than h&m Malaysia.

Why need to change money in hatyai?

well, from my experience for kastam, gonna talk a bit long about it,

if u drive in by urself, u going to prepare

1. Passport
2. Garan original + owner/owner letter and chop by balai polis

when u reach kastam,

1. fill in the white card (like the one on airpork) and chop your passpork. after chop, they will left 1 small pc for u. this you have to return when u go back to malaysia. return to thai kastam.
2. car insurance is recommended, u can do before the kastam u will see a lot on road side.
3. car will have 2 form. 1 is to declare things like passengers, driver(s), owner, etc. this u have to bring to chop passpork and the declaration together.
4. another car form is Kastam Declaration Form or something like that. This is very important and u cannot lose it. YOU NEED TO RETURN TO KASTAM THAI WHEN U GO BACK TO MALAYSIA.

if u fail to do so, your car will be blacklisted. will kena denda THB 10k on your next trip.

Buses to Songkhla pass by the clock tower in Hatyai.

Songkhla is much smaller than Hatyai, can cover it on foot from the hilltop (where a temple is) to Samila beach, where the little mermaid is.

Better to change in Malaysia. Changloon is the usual place, buses to Hatyai stopped here before the border immigration checkpoint at Bukit Kayu Hitam.

If going by train, there used to be money changers at Padang Besar, not sure now... as used to go there before the whole place including the train station was revamped/relocated. The border crossing by foot seemed to be much nearer then, not like 1 hour walk as reported.

Don't have to walk to the town on the other side, as local (Thai) buses from Padang pass by outside the Thai immigration checkpoint on the way to Hatyai.
