Today my female hedgie very naughty...pee on a hoglet The hoglet very innocent

Henrieta..... DIED !!!! NUUUUUU!!!

My poor hedgehog was shitting blood a bit few weeks ago but it was only on 1-2 occasion so didn't think much of it.

Then my father called up and said he saw the hedgehog lying on it's water bowl. I thought she was just playing about since she has a tendency to lie down and act lazy.

Then the next day the hedgehog was near the bowl still not moving and after giving it a prod found it dead !!!

It's nose is blackish and has some sort of puncture. It's mouth was foaming and had blood and some sort of greenish foam color.

I suspect a snake came and bit my poor Henrieta !!! Because i keep my hedgehogs at the back of the house and although it has large grills it won't stop any snakes that come from the backstreet outside ! I had some netting but i leave them off because it obstructs the hedgy wheel.

Mr moogle's seems to be fine because he has the pent house above Henrieta.

This is a totally f***ed up weekend for me and my hedgys .... i buried her opposite my house, may she rest in peace ( my parents wanted to throw her in the rubbish bin, can you believe that !!! )

Henrieta - my favourite hedgehog. Fat hedgy that is friendly and likes to lie flat on the cool glass. You will be remembered amen


Ps: after Henrieta's assassination by evil reptile, i called a vet to see how much it would be to take mr moogle's in for a check up, but they said keeping hedgehogs is illegal in malaysia and you need a permit or something. Is this true ?

I also have 1 house vacancy for any extra hegdy that needs a home since the bottom rack is empty, i have plenty of hedgy baby kitten food and an extra wheel !

I'm sorry for your lost....but i don't think a snake is the culprit. A snake would never go and harm another animal unless it feels threaten or scared. Hedgehogs also do not smell like rodents so snakes are not attracted.... most likely she died from internal bleeding as you said, she poop with blood. Are you sure got puncture wounds on the nose? Snake puncture wounds are not black.... they go infected and inflamed, becoming purplish. Greenish foam is bile, meaning she vomited her gastric juices.

A hedgehog if feels threaten or in danger would roll up in a ball, causing the snake to not strike the face at all but the quills only and the quills are too sharp for the snake to do damage. Some hedgehogs can survive from venom but they aren't immune.... but still, a hedgehog would be in a ball than show it's full body, especially its face fully exposed to a snake.

I'm sorry for your lost but I really think it could be something internal in her.

Hedgehogs are legal.... Porcupines are not.... your vet confused with 2 species....

Today I heard the silliest thing.... I was at a petshop buying RM5 worth of mealworms.... then I'm quite ok with the staff, always chat with them so I told her the mealworms were for my hedgehogs, then she told me this:

"Hedgehogs, don't they die easily?"

I was like "Huh? I've been keeping for 2 years lah" and then she was shock.... she told me there used to be a customer who bought 2 hoglets.... they died in a week.... you know why? The person did not do research lah..... For 1 week, the hoglets had nothing to eat but mealworms.... worst is that the mealworms didn't eat so they had very low nutrition in them..... since mealworms are just high in fat and moisture, there was nothing to sustain the health of the hoglets, so they died.... So I told the staff that next time anyone ask about diet, tell them feed high quality catfood like RC, then feed mealworms as snacks.

Porcupines have healthier meat than beef, lower in uric acid and also very tender. It is illegal to keep a porcupine or catch a porcupine without a permit..... but now they are farming them for the exotic meat trade so less wild porcupines become dinner.... it was in the newspapers.... summore say porcupine meat is very good for rendang.... crazy lah. Next what they farm? Bear and Tiger?
