so bored... I felt like being ignored by Ken.. T______T
normally if he will wake up with a curious face to see what's is happening if I made some noise.. but.... nowadays when I called him.. he will just look up for a second then go back sleep!! I felt sooooooooooooooooo ignored by his action -.-"""
*
I can picture him doing it laugh.gif so cute Ken
Hmm maybe try to make new toys for him to play?
They can be fascinated by simple things like small cardboard boxes, Or roll up a piece of paper into a tunnel for him to run in.
Or even cloth for him to snuggle and dig around in

Dont leave them in the cage for him, only let him use them when you are there with him.
That way, if he likes to toys he might begin to show more interest in spending time with you ( its like rasuah hahaha!)

No need to buy expensive fancy toys nod.gif just check the toys you choose to be sure they are clean and safe.

Added on May 14, 2008, 2:27 amI finally finished making a bucket wheel for Angel this week. Here are some pics.

Front view

Side view.
The back pole is intentionally slanted to balance out the slant of the bucket itself.
This is so the running surface is at 180%.

Everything in white hehe

The wheel is really good, beats anything you can buy in stores.
The smooth surface is really easy to clean and most of the time the poo and pee slides off as she runs.
When it spins its more smooth and silent than the silent spinner due to the fact its using a roller blade wheel with a bearing in it.
If you have a saw and drill at home (and you are reasonably good at DIY) you should really try making one!

I cant wait to replace demons silent spinner with one of these, I already bought the same bucket in pearl baby blue to match his liners laugh.gif

hey Cim,

is there any other explanation for scratching besides mites ?
cz i've checked but no mites...

could it b sum kind of bad habit or sumthing ?
*
Scratching sometimes is normal, just like how we humans get itchy sometimes, but if you notice scratching everyday then it could be mites, dry skin or possibly even a fungal infection.
What does the skin between the quills look like?

QUOTE(livingmonolith @ May 14 2008, 04:13 PM)
scratching should be common, provided that they don't do that excessively (which means mites somewhere). mine scratches itself once in a while too, even us humans scratch ourselves right? wink.gif

cool DIY wheel cim, but won't the bucket surface be too slippery for your hedgehog? later if it runs at top speed and slips, straightaway flings itself across the room, lol...
*
The design of this wheel had been around for many years , people have always used smooth surfaced buckets or cake covers.
Maybe mine looks slippery because the plastic is a pearly color?
Angel willingly runs when people are around so i get to observe her using it, she seems to go faster on this wheel lol. Maybe the bearing is smoother.

They do not need any surface grip because they run on the pads of their feet, not their nails.
Just like a barefoot human, would you be more comfortable running on a smooth floor or a bumpy pebbled floor? laugh.gif

In fact the raised bumps / textured surface of wheels like silent spinners and comfort wheels have been thought to potentially cause bruising.
(but i don't how true that is)
A rubbery surface will harbor bacteria after time since it will constantly be pooped and peed on.
Mesh surfaces are unsafe due to nails/toes getting caught.
Rough sandpaper like surfaces will injure the pads of their feet.

QUOTE(<Kenji> @ May 14 2008, 06:12 PM)
it scratches like everyday, but skin looks fine for me...
*
Hmm no dandruff flakes at all? Strange, scratching everyday is more than the normal amount
Both dry skin and mites will have the flaky skin symptom
But keep in mind mites cannot always be seen with your eyes
Do the edges of the ears look smooth or abit jagged? Is the skin on the tummy reddish?
Could be something is irritating its skin. This might sound silly but is your hedgie quilling? quilling will make them itchy.

I suggest maybe try an oatmeal bath first. But dont use any oil as this can aggravate it if its caused by fungus.
then wait a few days
If scratching persists then change to a totally different type/brand of bedding ( i dont mean change to clean bedding, try cloth/newspaper/tissue for a few days )

If its STILL scratching then maybe you better see a vet. Just to be sure it isn't mites or fungus.

Wah 2-3 days @_@ cannot imagine what it looks/ smells like.
Try soaking it for a few hours before you wash, will be much easier to clean.

Angel will just run and poo at the same time

cim, wanna see a clearer view of your litter box and also food bowl... can ah?

oops, forgot to say please...
*
rclxub.gif

I don't use a litter box, look closely at the pics of the cage, its just a white piece of folded paper towel under the wheel. I replace it everyday.
The paper towel is the kind that looks like a giant toilet roll, mostly people will use in the kitchen.

I used to put a tray under it, but i realized i didn't really need it because i am not using a litter that will scatter everywhere.

Been doing this for 4 months, They only pee or poo on the wheel or the paper towel, nowhere else at all.

Food bowl is a kidney shaped low ceramic bowl.
Its actually for reptiles but i like that its low enough that they can eat comfortably.
Pets Wonderland sells it, im using the smallest size.
The larger sizes are too big and you will end up with the poo in the foodbowl problem.
( smallest size is currently out of stock at the Midvalley outlet so try the others)

Yep, it wont terbalik because the ceramic base is fairly thick and heavy
Also the fact that its so low makes it very stable.
( people who lower their cars to make them more stable are following 'roughly' the same principle )

However if they do run across it, an earthquake will happen inside the bowl and some kibbles will scatter around laugh.gif

Rarely happens tho, because i normally place it against the side wall of the cage, where they are less likely to want to walk over it.
( i moved it so i could take this picture)
If you place it right smack in the middle of the cage they will probably walk over it all the time.

The only time cloth liners are not suitable is for a mother hedgehog with babies, as they need some form of nesting material and liners are difficult to change without upsetting the mother.

Other than that, they have benefits over other forms of bedding.
Regardless of if your hedgehog is litter trained or not

With liners and a non litter trained hog, you must spot clean everyday (pick up poo's lying around) urine will be absorbed by the liners but you can not leave the liners in for more than 3 days.

The liners may 'look' more dirty than wood shavings but they are much more hygienic if you maintain them as mentioned above.

Do not think to choose a dark colored cloth just so it hides the dirt, this will mean that you will not be able to spot blood in the urine or blood from injuries.

With wood shavings you can choose to leave the poo in and change the bedding only once a week
But remember just because its hidden from your eyes does not mean its cleaner.

Imagine what the cloth liner will look like after one week and you will realize how dirty the wood shavings really are.

Just like humans hedgehogs all have their own individual tastes in food. Its normal for them to like some kibbles more than others.
Maybe he likes the taste of babycat better, or maybe he likes the small size.

Scattered kibbles is also pretty common, depending on the habits of the hedgehog and the type and placement of the bowl. It could be the bowl or it could be he just likes to play and scatter them laugh.gif

Poor Ken laugh.gif

I think it always falls because Silent Spinner cannot be attached to the side of the Toyogo box, the stand is famous for being too small to support the wheel by itself.

Maybe you can try to use something to weigh down the stand? A flat tile would be good but i don't know where to get those.

12 inch wheel falling on a hedgehog is like a bookshelf falling on a human being

cim, if u arent selling to him sell to me ok.. hehe..

btw, i've heard once that there's a hedgie taking calcium intake..

is that necessary? is it rep-cal or what?
*
The calcium powder people dust insects with before they feed to reptiles?
Don't think i have ever heard of it being necessary for hedgehogs, oat/fruit/veggie gut loading of feeder insects is sufficient for them.
Cottage cheese is the only recommended 'calcium' source i have seen people mention giving hedgies.

Ill ask around about it just to be sure
But keep in mind any supplement should be given in moderation, overdose can be more dangerous than not giving any supplement at all.

Superworms have very strong jaws, some hedgies like them but some are afraid of them. Also superworms move alot faster than mealworms

There have been many cases of hedgies being bitten by superworms.
It is recommended you disable the superworm by removing the head before feeding to your hedgie.

Mealworms are much more suitable for hedgies than superworms. Bigger is not always better.
