well, try both. see which ur hedgie like. dont have to disable it. just keep an eye on it while it eats.
*
The bite is not serious, but why allow a chance that your hedgie may get bitten?
Keeping an eye on it wont prevent it from biting, Supers are pretty fast and the hedgie will likely be very close and sniffing at the worm.
You wont be fast enough to stop anything.
Only when the hedgehog has already become familiar with the superworm and will eat it up very fast can you consider to stop removing the head

I do not understand why you chose to contradict the advice of disabling the superworm, it is reasonable advice.

Threads discussing superworms on some international hedgie forums. Many of the posters have several years of breeding experience

http://www.chins-n-quills.com/forums/showt...light=superworm
http://hedgehogcentral.com/forum/index.php...=superworm&st=0
http://www.chins-n-quills.com/forums/showt...light=superworm

Also Superworms contain much more fat than Mealworms, the body to chitin ratio is higher.
This makes Superworms better than Mealworms for many reptiles but NOT hedgehogs
With hedgehogs the chitin is what they actually need from insects not the body.
Since Mealworms have a higher chitin to body ratio this means
more chitin less fat = better for hedgies.

Yes exactly google and research, join mailing lists, join forums.
Make contact with people and learn from their experience.
Most importantly READ everything you can get your hands on.

Dont get info from once place only, sometimes its inaccurate or out of date .Be sure to find multiple sources of up to date info.

If you have internet access you can find out nearly everything you want to know.

QUOTE(Isolationx @ May 18 2008, 05:00 PM)
guys....
green poop means either stress/illness/diet change
then dark brown is normal...
then what about brown?
my hedgie's poop sometimes brownish like that
not dark brown....is this normal? x_x
*
Erm its hard to imagine what you mean rclxub.gif

The size and consistency is similar to toothpaste being squeezed from a tube

Poop that is so dark that its almost black, is not normal, if there is greenish slime coating the black poop this may indicate liver problems.
Poop that is so pale its more beige than brown is also abnormal

But as long as it can still be called 'brown' it should be ok,
The exact brown varies depending on what brand of food and what other foods the hedgehog eats.

1 more thing... can i feed hedgies with fruit o wat fruit hedgies cannot eat? watermelon can?
*
Missed this somehow.
Yes fruits are good treats for them, just be sure to remove the seeds.
Do not ever feed grapes, grapes are toxic to small animals

Also im linking you the site that i previously linked to you again, if you had read before it you would have already found out about fruits.
Please do take the time to look through this time. dry.gif

Please do not breed them for no good reason.
Breeding is not easy, not fun, and definitely NOT something for inexperienced beginners

If you are thinking about breeding to make money let me tell you that you need to be prepared to spend more than you will earn.
If something goes wrong during birth/pregnancy and you do not provide emergency vet treatment to a hedgehog that is pregnant because YOU wanted her to be, then the blood is literally on your hands, because you killed them.

Alot of things can go wrong, horribly wrong.
click here to SEE what i mean
warning do not click if you cannot stand the sight of blood
http://www.hamorhollow.com/gallery/Health-Destroyed

My honest advice to you is learn everything you can about how to keep a hedgehog healthy and happy as a pet before you even start to think about anything else.
Welcome to hedgehog corner.

Hehe. Thanks.  biggrin.gif He's just so adorableeee.

Hmm...to toilet train hedgehogs, I just need to keep putting their poop in the litter box right? Do I have to use cat litter or can I just use like paper towels? Thx.

user posted image

Yep, just keep seeding the litter box with poops and hopefully Oakey will get the idea

Remember to have patience for now because he is still a little baby and babies have poor bladder control (will just poop whenever and wherever they like several time a day)
As he gets older his intestine will lengthen and he will be able to control it better.

Either paper towel or cat litter is fine, I am using paper towel.
But if you choose cat litter be sure to avoid the clumping or clay type, also the crystal type is unsuitable.
You can also use breeders celect in the litter box.

He is incredibly adorable wub.gif , He looks alot like my Demon did as a baby
Take as many pictures as you can because he will grow up in the blink of an eye.

tq for ur advice..no reason to make money...i just want them stay together like hamster family...very nice to see they play together in same house rite??i also know, and read alot in hedgehogvalley.com...yes,it might effect the mother when give birth...i also dont want to take the risk..just wanna make mine, happy
*
I see, i understand how you feel nod.gif
Its normal for humans to want to put animals together in pairs/families so they can feel happy just like we do when we are with our friends or families
But you must realize that just because you and me feel that way, that does not mean that all creatures feel the same.

Hedgehogs are solitary and territorial. In the wild they will never stay together.
They will meet to mate, then seperate immediately.
If the babies stay too long with the mother the mother will begin to show aggression towards the babies.
They do not get lonely, they do not have any need to be with 'family'
When you put two hedgehogs in the same cage they will feel angry, hostile and stressed.
When they have lots of space, all the food and toys belongs to them alone, they will be comfortable, relaxed and happiest of all.

As strange as it sounds forcing hedgehogs to live together is as cruel as forcing a human to be totally alone

Demon was really super dark as a baby, as he got older became slightly lighter.

Nikki is he peeing? If he is peeing and the pee colour is a light yellow, he is probably drinking when your not around. They don't always drink directly after eating. If you are concerned just monitor the water level in the bowl and his urine.

lol cim long lecture xD
eh cim how come the mom destroy the baby ea?
*
Most likely something happen to stress the mother, or sometimes the babies are born with problems so the mother will cannibalize them.
Also sometimes geniuses make a male and female live together and they don't realize the female is pregnant.
When she gives birth mom and dad will happily cannibalize the babies together.

Am i really THAT long winded??...nm dont answer laugh.gif

Went to pet shack today for the first time, the dogs and hamsters looked healthy and well cared for.
But unfortunately since i do not own dogs/hamsters/gliders there was nothing much of interest to me. Was only there for 5-7 minutes XD.

I find handling young hedgies more difficult than older ones.
Firstly as babies they have finer, sharper quills, secondly their bodies are small and fragile feeling.
Once they get bigger and fatter and have grown in their somewhat 'blunt' adult quills, i don't have problems picking them up, no matter how angry they are.

However don't squeeze your hand between the side of the cage and a grumpy hedgehog, if they charge and your hand has nowhere to go .... ><

Heyyy, Oakey keeps crawling under the fleece bedding and pooping there. It's so hard to clean. Lately, he loves crawling under the bedding and sleep there. Is it because it's warm or something? But I bought him a lovely hideout with fleece inside too! Aww.. sad.gif

Hi Nikki let me share with you a neat trick to stop them from digging under the liner

Go to a hardware store and buy some self stick velcro
Be sure to buy both the fuzzy and scratchy sides, buy enough for all your liners.

Cut them into pieces and stick pieces of the fuzzy side on the liner and correspondingly located pieces of the scratchy side on the base of the cage (perhaps one piece in each corner? its up to you)
This way the liner will attach securely to the base of the cage but you can still easily remove to wash. (velcro is washable so just leave it on the liner and wash them together)

This is what velcro looks like, they are sold either in packets or in rolls which you can buy the amount you need by the length.

I got mine from Ace Hardware. I used it when Demon was small, once he figured out that he couldn't get under the liners anymore he stopped trying. Now in his new cage i do not use velcro but he no longer goes under the liners.

QUOTE(kelvin_faye @ Jun 1 2008, 09:45 AM)
can they run in wobust wheel actually?? curious! blink.gif
*
Not suitable for them because

1) They have a tendency to look to the side when they run, the holes on the wheel have the same risk as wheels with spokes to cause injury by hitting the face and possibly causing eye injuries.

2) They pee/poo on their wheels while running, since the wobust wheel has a closed front design the pee and poop stays inside the wheel. The hedgehog will be running in this slushy mess all night

3) The width of the running area wheel is too narrow for larger hedgehogs ( yes even the wobust size is too narrow )

Wobust and other sizes of the Wodent Wheel are great for rodents, and wonderfully designed with their needs in mind. But unfortunately hedgehogs are not rodents.

Similar cases have happened in the past, one a few months back, nearly always the hedgehog is either severely injured or killed.
Simple case of human stupidity, unfortunate case of animal abuse.
