Oh? well i have never bred, or had intention to breed so i could be mistaken.
I read that by week 6 most moms will be displaying territorial behavior again and begin to show signs of reluctance to spend time close with the babies.Another thing is by 8 weeks the hoglets are already sexually mature and able to breed, some of the males may even try mounting mom I got Demon at 5 weeks old (this seems abit too young, maybe he was one of those mom harassers Angel is 8 weeks old and has been weaned for 2 weeks already. So based on all that i was under the impression 6 weeks was the recommended, 5 the minimum and 7 the maximum. Taken from HHC QUOTE "At 5 weeks you may hold them considerably longer. The mother has begun to wean them and they should be eating on their own. It's is generally recommended that you not remove them from her until they are at least 6 weeks old, though, since they are still emotionally dependent on their mother, as is she on them. At 6 weeks, the female will be tired of the now-weaned hoglets and this can be seen by the amount of time she spends outside of the nest. By this time you should have another cage ready for the youngsters. Remove them from the mother and place them in this new cage. Handle these young hedgehogs constantly to ensure that they are comfortable around people and will make super pets. At 8 weeks separate your young males and females as it is actually possible for them to breed at that age. This is not good. They are still children" It probably varies from litter to litter but keeping them with mom for 8 weeks seems abit too long? This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Mar 12 2008, 05:20 PM |

Sooooooo geram that first pic with the double chin, more like a little bear than a hog!
Added on March 17, 2008, 10:21 pmSome updates CORRECTED: Advantage drops are safe to use on hedgies for fleas but has no known effect on mites Blackwood Adult Cat (not kitten), which we have locally, is another brand that is suitable to feed. I would say ingredient wise its better than RC but not as good as Solid Gold. This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Apr 2 2008, 11:47 PM |

Demon seems to be terbalik, his shoulder area is broad, and the butt end is kinda narrow......like the hedgie version of Johnny Bravo.

Yep, you can feed them certain types of both but all skin (pesticides) and seeds (toxic and potential choking hazard) must be removed.
Never feed grapes they are highly toxic to small animals. Also avoid citrus fruits like oranges, and spicy veggies like peppers. Fruit can be fed fresh as long as its cut into small pieces but generally they will not eat veggies raw, must boil till soft / mushy. Fruits - fresh or from baby food Berries (Strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, etc) Banana Melon (watermelon, honeydew, cantelope, etc.) Pear Apple Vegetables - cooked until tender or from baby food Carrot Squash (butternut, pumpkin, zucchini, etc.) green bean asparagus peas Sweet Potato So far out of all i tried, the only one Demon will eat is apple With Angel ive only tried banana and watermelon, she didnt show any interest, but shes still pretty young, so ill keep trying. Sigh this video again, used to be on youtube its been linked a few times on some other hedgehog forums and many people are quite upset about it.
It may seem cute but if you think about it 1 Hes not eating a carrot, its a yogurt drop which is not good for them. Its much too hard and round to be a 'carrot' 2 Hes having a very difficult time trying to bite it...more kesian than cute imo. 3 Holding him like that and feeding him something that big and hard is a choking hazard Dont hold you hedgehog like this and feed them at the same time please This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Mar 21 2008, 10:18 PM |

Been a crazy 2 weeks...
My younger sis came back from Japan (shes living there, dont get to see her much) for a visit so we went down to stay in Singapore for abit so she could do some shopping and we could spend some QC time together. Then i get a throat infection from hell...oh man the pain, lost my voice for a few days....developed a pei pa ko addiction, that stuff really tastes GOOOOOD THEN i come home to find that Angel has mites and that my mealie farm is also mite infested..not sure if Angel had the mites since i brought her home or the mites came from the mealie substrate (rolled oat and oatmeal) Anyways i commit mass murder on the mealies, pupas and beetles with H2O, then lay them to rest in the dumpster ( so tragic, just had my first batch of baby mealies hatch too...) Treat both Demon and Angel for mites with Advantage and i clean their room like theres no tomorrow....oh man...no fun cleaning, mopping washing imagining mites crawling everywhere while your sick. THEN i find out Advantage does not kill mites!!! So i spend one whole sleepless night freaking out then rush out and get a small bottle of frontline spray the next day. treat them with it then clean everything all over again......... On a side note Angel is finally getting comfy with us its pretty exiting to me because Demon will only wheel in private, the minute he realizes your in the room he freezes and jumps off LOL PS: Dante21 did you get your hedgie from Fadzil? looks identical to my girl Angel (she had 3 other siblings, all platinum/heavy snowflakes) |

Hehe
Actually what i really like are albinos, or true S&P hedgehogs Actually real S&P is an extremely rare color, what most local breeders or petstores call salt&pepper is actually either brown or grey True S&P hedgies have genuinely black masks, ears, quill banding and shoulder skin (the skin between the quills) For those of you that thought your little one was a salt and pepper you can find out of its brown, grey or if your the lucky owner of a incredibly rare true S&P by looking here, the pictures are not a 100% accurate way to judge due to lighting and flash having a tendency to fade or alter coloration, so read the descriptions carefully. I mean how CUTE is this algerian black, seriously GERAM...i never get sick of looking at this sweetie. ![]() |

Pictures would be awesome from both of you, sometimes its hard to tell from pictures tho, so the most accurate way would be to check by the description. Its best to check after the hedgehog is done with quilling, pre-quilling color is known as juvenile coloration and is not an accurate way to judge. Angel is still quilling so i dont know if she will be a heavy snowflake or a platinum yet altho she does appear to be only growing in white quills
Muchan, My guess is Ken is an algerian grey snowflake You can tell by his black nose, Dark mask that extends under his eyes and dark rusty banding Well im sure hes algerian grey but im not sure about the snowflake, did he get more or less white quills after he finished quilling? Descriptions taken from HHC colour guide Algerian Grey Snowflake Spines are interspersed approximately 50/50 by solid cream quills with no bands and banded quills with black with rust edges. The skin is heavily mottled. The overall appearance is that of rust and cream colored quills. The nose is black, the face has a dark mask and the cheek patches are a deep, golden-brown. Demon was a lightly snowflaked baby but he got darker after quilling, He is an algerian dark grey Algerian Dark Grey Spines are cream, banded by black with rust edges. The banding extends almost to the tip of the spines. The skin is almost jet black. The face mask is extensive and extends from beneath the eyes almost to the quill line beneath the ears. The overall appearance is that of rust-coloured spines. All other features are the same as Black Algerian. when he was a small potato (6 weeks) i LOVE this baby pic, and almost done quilling below (3-4 months), you can see that his quills look darker overall because he didnt grow back the white ones he dropped, and also his mask covers much more of his face now » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « A blur pic but his face is even more masked now at 5 months+ and yeah, he sure is happy to see that mealie » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Easiest way to tell a brown from a grey is the nose, Greys have black noses, Browns have brown ones. Looks like Ken is an Algerian Chocolate Snowflake and not a grey after all
That little nose is definitely brown! Does he fit this description better? Algerian Chocolate Snowflake Spines are interspersed approximately 50/50 by solid cream quills with no bands and banded quills with light brown. The skin is dark gray, the mask is medium brown with light golden brown cheek patches. There is light mottling of the underbelly. The nose is chocolate brown. This picture is adorable, so nice and plump ![]() Did it fade or was it always brown? i seem to recall him being darker in older pictures, like in the lilipie banner in your sig. Or maybe my memory is the only thing thats fading >< I didn't know that we only have Algerians available here, but now that i think about it almost all the local hedgehogs ive seen are indeed Algerians I dont think it has anything to do with legal or illegal tho, Because in this case Algerian and White Bellied (non algerian) are just terms used to describe the visual variations of the African Hedgehog species we keep as pets. Lil maine: Yeah you right he really did look like a toy at that time! I regret not taking more pics of him at that age This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Apr 4 2008, 02:36 AM |

QUOTE(livingmonolith @ Apr 4 2008, 01:52 PM) mine has a very dark mask with black nose. should be an algerian dark grey, but i wouldn't know more until he has shed all his baby quills. still not very clear with the quill colours. Teeheehee, i have many many more Angel pics just waiting
Mamata how often do you play with her? If possible try to give her a few minutes of your time everyday. Take her out of the cage and hold her or if she cant keep still let her run around and explore. Stay close and talk to her while shes doing this so she can feel that your accompanying her. On days that you are busy what you can do is wake her up when your doing the wheel / giving food/water. Let her walk around the cage and talk to her while you do the stuff. That way you can still spend at least a few minutes together. Added on April 5, 2008, 7:51 pmLook what i happen to come across! Chocolate Hedgehogs, incredibly cute and yummy looking @_@ Made from white, milk and dark belgian chocolate ...but unfortunately no longer available ![]() This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Apr 5 2008, 07:51 PM |

Another thing to consider when litter training is where you put the litter pan
If you find your hedgie always likes to poo in the same spot then put the litter pan there For many people putting it under the wheel works well, Mainly because this is an area you hedgehog already associates with doing their business. Of course you must make sure the pan is big enough for the wheel stand to fit in, this way any stuff that leaks out of the wheel will also end up in the litter box I tried cat litter for awhile but i found that Demon had a tendency to scatter it all over the place and play in it It absorbs all the pee well and it works as a mat to step on when going off the wheel, so no poopy footprints all over the liner 1 roll can last a month, slightly more than RM 1 per roll (i get mine from tesco) don't bother with the super absorbent expensive type, the cheap kind works just as good for this. And you must admit RM 1+ per month is really affordable! About the apple flavored bedding i have no idea about this product sorry, is it really apple flavored or just apple scented? If its flavored just be sure they don't try to eat it, and if its apple scented just make sure it wont irritate their nose ( look out for sniffling/sneezing and runny nose) Other than that i would go with Hun's advice on bedding PS: Avoid clumping type cat litter, this can also cause blockage in their genitals. |

Oh dear, that does not sound good.... sounds like you have a severely underage hedgehog...
either that or a very very sick hedgehog... Their eyes open somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd week They should not be weaned from their mother before 5-6 weeks of age, at that age they are eating solid food and no longer need milk. (i hope you are not feeding cows milk) How big is the hedgehog? are you sure its eyes are not yet open or is it just hiding? Which ^%@^&!%@ pet shop did you buy it from? And..... also may i ask why you chose to bring home an unhealthy looking animal? This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Apr 7 2008, 12:01 AM |
