Hi,

I plan to buy car, family consist of me + wife + 8m/o son + unborn child. Car will use for daily drive,(fetch 2 kids to babysitter), and use as family car long distance travel(maybe once a month). Office and babysitter distance is only like 20minutes from my house. Do you guys think SUV or Sedan better for us?

For family, SUV or MPV.
For ownself, sedan or coupe.

Boi u must be still single 😋. If have children, people tend to plan ahead what type of car they will buy and the cargo space/layout it offers to put baby accessories and other items.

For me, I dont believe buta2 what manufacturer state on paper because different car have different usable space and layout.

im surprised when people mentioning Ikea here.

hiring ikea to send your stuff to your house is like rm50 only.

you dont need to base your 5 years commitment on ikea shopping.

and how often do you do shopping in ikea for bulky stuff? you renovate every 6 months?
*
It's an option lah. You say like that, might as well don't buy car. Why commit 5 years for a hunk of metal. Just take grab everywhere.

not sure why ppl keep mentioned is hard to keep stroller in sedan.
i drove a persona, my boot can keep 2 stroller and still got space to put some bags.

Also for TS, sooner when your kids age around 3 - 4, they rarely wanna use stroller anymore.

SUV at least can escape from floods. Sedan need to climb out from the sunroof and wait for help.

When shopping for a car. Bring your child seat along. Have it fitted and see how easy you can get your kid in and strap them in. Bring stroller and what ever baby crap you have and see how you can load them in.
BTW when your wife is 8 months pregnant, she will appreciate a seat that matches her hip point, so it is easy to just slide the legs in and out and get in/out. A sedan will have a seat lower than the hip height so you have to sit DOWN and get UP. Just get something reasonable and not an SUV that is too tall.

Btw the civic has a fairly low roofline. Do the child seat test first.

Take it from experiences of a parent to another parent. Unlike /k forever alone. My wife jokes I bought a car for the kids instead of for her. She got her own car now that the kids are older and can strap themselves in. My youngest is 9 and is still on a booster seat. The eldest is 12 and don't need one now.

sedan more practical because it has a proper boot space covered and separated away from passenger cabin, and also more comfortable than SUV due to lower height.

unless your area is prone to flood, then a slightly higher SUV (or pickup truck even better, more ground clearance) makes sense otherwise no point getting one. and most family-oriented SUVs are not that tough to begin with, your typical shiny bling bling CRV CX-5 are certainly not Toyota Fortuner.

another viable option would be MPV. not talking about Alphard Vellfire Serena kind of MPV but something like Exora, Sienta, Wish etc. they quite good to drive and perfect for family outing.

ps: compare apple to apple in terms of size and pricing, not Ativa vs. Bentley ok...

For RM130k-140k, I would choose Corolla Cross (hybrid) for 4 pax.

I have tested it, it is comfortable. The benefit of an SUV style is always the seating height and it is less hard on the knees and back when you bend down etc and need to pick up babies and stroller and luggage. Entry and egress also super easy compared to certain sedans.

In the same category you also have Subaru XV which is even smaller but more expensive. And also potentially the new HRV, but it remains to be seen what are the trim and engine options you can get at 130k (hopefully a lot) and for now it appears bigger than the outgoing model, yet we dont know for sure how practically bigger....??

The downside of Corolla cross is the size again in terms of width, it will be narrow for 3 adults side by side. It depends if you really need that tiny extra 2inch of hip / shoulder width. Why Toyota didnt package this wider, I am not sure. Then again they show with CH-R they can miss the entire package and not suffer.

Due to this, I opted for Civic which will accommodate full 3 adults....although just barely. It would've better if I went for a D segment but budget limited. A SUV style is also great when you want to collapse the rear seat to buy a baby crib or ikea furniture.

I directly overlook any vehicle that does not have any ADAS, for 130k.

To complete my story I have a Nissan Grand Livina if I need to do weird carrying duties...

I have a T30 X trail AWD and a Hyundai matrix. Wife now drives a Yaris after trading in her Citra MPV.

All our cars are in fact hatchbacks...never owned a sedan.

For fun and adrenaline rush, I just take my bike now. Retired the "fun" car long time ago.

Actually it depends. Smaller MPVs and SUVs are better because the seat height matchers the hip point, so it is easy to get in and out. Just don't get a SUV that is too tall can already.

You should try and see.

elsewhere in ASEAN, the 1.5T HRV is almost the exact same price as Civic (which you know top spec is RM144k) so perhaps 130k you won't get top spec for HRV.
