@fylon, then should be the RAM access to the files are slow.High latency in the reading of HDD ? Between, i think the HDD buffer size will do effect on it right even it's just reading.

These slow down issues with HDD might got something to do with windows. I for one, never got those issues due to always keeping my system clean from having too many background programs running. I have 3 HDDs in my rig, no slowdowns encountered. I truly believe the user's maintenance/habit of software usage and hardware maintenace affects the overall performance of the PC. U gotta know what u r doing and how the things you did affects your PC's performance. For example, by installing Norton 360, you'll be overloading your windows with unnecessary background programs (bloatware?) and definately affects the performance directly.
Having to run defragmentation once a week I think is not wise at all if you do not have lots of file transfers. Fragmentation has been minimised since the introduction of Windows XP using NTFS. This post has been edited by edministrator: Sep 29 2007, 07:18 PM |

Actually already defragged the HDD,
but for these few big folders seems to be a little more problematic. Maybe 320GB is too hard for a 865 chipset to handle? |

QUOTE(choongkeat @ Sep 29 2007, 07:10 PM) Actually already defragged the HDD, No, 865 chipsets can handle 320GB HDD just fine. What antivirus you are using? It might affect the slowdown also due to scanning the large files while you are trying to access the folders.but for these few big folders seems to be a little more problematic. I am using Mcafee too...
Maybe thats the reason.... but running defragment once a week will really hurt the hard disk. |

QUOTE(fylon @ Sep 29 2007, 07:26 PM) @edmin even with that kind file copying habit, as long as it is done in another partition or hard disk that does not contain your main windows files system, there is no such need to defrag weekly. I also regularly transfer hundred of gigs worth of data, kabukiawie can verify this. But I keep the windows drive separated from my regularly read/write hard disk, so there will be no impact on fragmentation of system files. you have to understand the logic of fragmentation and its impact on system performance. im using Zone Alarm and NOD32, so far its ok, but the zone alarm quite troublesome, for eg. in my uni all of us use mirc to share files, whenever i wanna start the mirc application, they will block it although i've given access, so in the end i switch it off,
btw i used to defrag (using norton) my com once every week (3 years ago lar), that time i think my com run smoothly, but rite nw i din defrag coz vy troublesome, if wanna defrag needs at least a few hours to do each drive, thats when i realise smth, my avi files which i've keep for quite long, at least 3 months gt a bit corrupt, when i 1st dl the file and watch it theres no green boxes appearing here and there in the movie, then after 4/5 month leaving it in my hdd, and i open it again, i saw some greens boxes do u guys hv dis kind of prob? |

It only happens under these circumstances: virus attacks, dying hard disks (data loss due to bad sector, etc) or some program altering the original file.
