thalmes: the tone hammer is basically a tone shaper direct input box. erm, i dunno hw to explain, but here is a link: http://www.aguilaramp.com/tonehammer_settings.htm
basically all u need between ur bass and ur amp. but lordie might nt agree wit dat, of course, hehe. |

tonehammer is used by a lot of major artistes, mainly coz it's much cleaner than sansamp's bass driver. but still sansamp is used by flea of red hot chili. sansamp is definitely much cheaper, as of nw tonehammer is like rm1200 (forecast) compared to rm800 of the sansamp. did u listen to the sound samples on the link i posted? listen to vivi rama, her grooves are amazing.
Definitely smth u shudnt pass, must have at least an outboard preamp before u consider multi effects But u can try looking up EBS's microbass II, might be better than the tone hammer in terms of variety of sounds, nt so sure about that. but the endorser is stanley clarke la, haha, so tells u a lot of story adee |

thalmes: the tone hammer, ebs microbass, sansamp, etc. is essentially an outboard preamp. so u can shape ur tone pre-amplified without changing ur bass's electronics.
onboard preamps, like audere, bartolini, or aguilar obp are meant to be fitted into ur bass. and lordie said dat the audere has an active to passive switch. out and onboard preamps as a whole, has active circuitry (correct me if im wrong, not really sure), so if u take an active bass, plug into a preamp like tonehammer, the change in tone is nt as drastic as when u plug a passive bass into a similar preamp. But there is a con to dat; the passive tone dat is so yummy frm ur passive bass might be gone and replaced with an active signal; shud i say modern sound? very useful if u play slap pop (but i still like traditional slap pop tone, hehe). so the audere is great, coz let u switch between active and passive, so u can do dat on stage easily, between fingerstyle and slap pop, etc. But dat's wat i think la, no source frm anywhere, dun take my word for it. Lordie, the active or passive switch can be replicated by the bypass on an outboard preamp, no? does the audere shape the tone of the passive bass while in passive mode? |

wa, coz i dun think i can live without the passive jazz bass tone.. Big fan.
But at times, i do yearn to switch between a modern sound and a traditional sound midway on stage without having to change gears, etc. especially when a song involves some progressive lines coupled with jazz bridges, etc. (hw to play jazz with modern sound? haha). so yeah.. |

thalmes: the nut part? u mean, as in the plastic / bone thingy near the headstock? i thought bacchus' tuners and all follows the standard fender jazz bass's template? if it is, should be rather simple, dun care about the nut first, measure about 15cm from ur fretboard (of course, ur string has to go thru the bridge first la, hehe) to your string (using ur hand) then pull the end to somewhere near the hole of the machine head and cut any excess string, then put the cut end into the hole, then bend it so that it's about 100degrees between the string in the hole and the string to be wound up. then just start winding! hehe. dun bother using a peg. Oh yea, dun forget to make sure the string is held properly on the nut. Also, make sure u dun tune each string to pitch one by one. put all the strings in place first, about just taut (not too tight) and then only start tuning the strings to pitch, coz tuning one by one to pitch might be harmful to the bass's neck.
