Just a curious question here which would help me to choose.

With the plethora of faster and faster DRAMless (HMB) Gen4 SSD, would it still make sense to go for slower Gen3 SSD with DRAM?

I mean would you still pick a Transcend MTE220 (3300R/2800W) over a Crucial P3Plus (5000R/3600W)?

I don't mind picking up the MTE220S (if only I can get it at a great price) for storage purposes. The high TBW is the one factor that I can't ignore.
*
I see. I intend to use either as a primary boot+windows drive for the next few years, while waiting gen4 SSD to come down in prices, which then I will swap windows to the newer drive and use the older SSD as a storage drive. Tbh, these TBW means nothing much to me, I had a MLC SSD supposedly with far higher TBW than TLC SSD but it failed on me after 3+ years of normal use.

In case you are looking for P3+ 1TB, Amazon SG is selling it for S$76.  brows.gif

*
Yeah very tempting at least 50% off the prices you get from local sellers but then if anything happen, no warranty yo sweat.gif And I would be wary of any too cheap deals from Amazon as I heard from Redditors that Amazon US is crawling with fakes and Amazon apparently don't even care, doubly if we are buying something that will not be covered by their customer protection policy. Unless ur living in SG, imho thats too risky.

Their P5Plus is also very tempting if anyone is willing to take the risk. Haha
https://www.amazon.sg/Crucial-Plus-PCIe-Gam...098WL46RS&psc=1

EDIT: Just to add, even buyers in SG would not be covered for warranty by their local distros if bought from Amazon so either way its too risky when local & SG distros will no cover you! Then that 5 year warranty is for show lel!

im using an older ssd from them, the KC2500, it was a pretty good value drive
the KC3000 that replaced it isnt that great in terms of value

NV2, seems good on paper, TLC nand, dramless but so is the PNY CS1031
pcie gen4 support although its speeds only reach gen3
*
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/kingston-nv2-ssd/2
Toms put this in the Not Recommend category

If you only have Gen3 slot available, this would do fine as a storage drive but it would be wasted potential if chuck into a Gen4.

thanks guys, after some review and screening available prices, i have decided to go with SN570

57sgd SN570 on offer 67sgd 1tb sn570

plus first purchase 10sgd off for app, total dmg 190rm pre tax

didnt show any indication for the tax calculation though the shipping free, indicated 7sgd there though so not sure if its that one
*
Rm190 is a damn good price but you do sacrifice warranty and risk having it gone and in use in some Kastam officers PC.

SN570 still DRAMless by the way.
*
Nowadays midrange affordable NVME SSDs are commonly DRAMless, but the higher Gen4 speeds might better mitigate that buffer loss.

Cheapest SN570 1TB I can find from Shopee is RM297. Transcend MTE220S 1TB at RM295. Do you want Stupid Nonsense or the one with DRAM and much more TBW?

Oh, Kingston KC3000 1TB at RM383 as well.
*
Now to find MTE220S 1TB is rare, I see shopee only got 2 seller now. While SN570 1TB mana mana pun ada. And Crucial P3 is HMB, Solidgm P41 is HMB, Kingston NV2 is HMB, all of these are HMB and 1TB easily to find everywhere. Face it, lower speed SSD with DRAM are getting phased out for HMB.

And 33% more expensive puts the KC3000 on another bracket of price segment in the upper midrange Gen4.

I know Ooree, had bought a Kingston mSATA SSD from them, their Q&A replies leaves much to be desired but its okay anyways, tho I think they might be related to the OK Globe that had refused to honour their wrong pricing that a forumer had shout out earlier. I'd be wary if they had a too good deal.

But yeah I was looking at Ooree shopee page last week I think 1TB was OOS then.

as of now, imo a better way to populate ssds in a desktop computer is like this:
1. a small dedicated os drive - nvme, 3d-tlc, 512gb or more;
2. work drives -  1x apps/games, 1x data; nvme, 3d-tlc, 2tb or more;
3. a game/content drive - nvme, qlc + dram, 4tb or more.

this should yield a relatively better performance, plus you can do regular os/data backups, so that you can restore things quickly when shits happen.

offload tasks like downloads to an old pc, and an array of sata-based hdd storage (for data backups, archives) to another. you can manage both machines with rdp (at least change the port, and enable windows firewall to accept lan-only connections)

i think above is the better way to use qlc drives, i.e. read-intensive mainly.

Dats a whole lot more drives than any MATX mobo have NVME slots sweat.gif

Looks like SSD price have come down locally, for the small brand. PNY 1TB SATA SSD can be found just slightly above RM200
*
Got a link bro? I'd wary of really cheap drives as they could be really substandard C grade stuff or worse; fakes, which is very prevalent with SATA SSD nowadays

OS on 1 drive, apps on another
won't by reinstalling the OS will 'unlink' the apps as well? the registry and stuffs (unsure of the proper terms here)
it works for games library, not so sure on other apps
*
If you clone & reimage primary partitions over to new SSD, like using Macrium, no need to reinstall as everything should be exactly as before just only in a new drive.

If you reinstall Windows to the new drive then yes you need to reinstall all the programs again.

so far the most common fakes I've seen are WD Green and Kingston A400

but I have seen Samsung ones too, in both SATA and M.2 form factor
*
I think as long as its a popular and trusted brand, it can be faked. Moreso with SSD since the casing can hide something like this

But if seller is TMT then should be ori lah.

Yeah I suspected as much but somehow Ooree has better ratings than OK Globe. So I went for the former instead. Haha.

Sometimes too good to be true deals are just... too good to be true. Even if it looks genuine. Worse when you might not have buyers protection, and Amazon are quite the bottom of that.

Does the MTE220S run hot? I'm going to use it as a capture drive that will do lots of long time writing
It will write data to the drive between 4 ~ 8 hours at a time

Currently using HDD but the HDD is showing lots of bad sectors now as it's being used in an unstable location
Inside a car being used for capturing route data. Already used lots of soft silicone to protect the HDD from any shocks but it still happen anyway
This is the 4th HDD that died during the project
Already tried multiple HDD models, each HDD only survives between 6 - 12 months

Thinking if I should use active cooling on the MTE220S so that it will run a lot cooler too
*
Still not ideal. PC grade SSDs arent designed for use in cars. You will need something like industrial grade type SSD. For ur dynamic use case try consider high storage SDXC cards, specifically those recommended for use in dashcams.

I m intrigued by how come the ssd of 8TB is so cheap being sold in shopee or Lazada. Is this real?
*
LOL Ada sauce?

8TB is like the max capacity for current SSD technology. That too on Enterprise drives, most consumer ones tops at 4TB. If its less than RM4k its not real, like those fake USB drives.
