Hi sifus, can please recommend a good laptop for a software engineering student,

1: Budget about 4K
2: usage - coding, programming, vm, sql+
3: Display about 14-15 inch but if possible good quality cos will be looking at screen for long hours
4: good build quality
5: looking at ryzen 5 series cpus (6 cores enough ah for the above uses?)
6: 16gb RAM (upgradable for future so need two slots)
7 : storage 256gb above ( but needs to be 2280, easier to upgrade in future
8: not really into gaming, more like Minecraft
9: weight about 2.5kg or so
10: can wait about 4-6 weeks
11: if possible 3 years onsite support?

Actually was kinda looking for ryzen 5 3rd gen cpus (like the 5xxx series, if available tho', is there a lot of difference between the 4xxx and the 5xxx?) , any coupons available, thxs.

3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) :
Display: About 14 to 15 inches is fine but will most probably plug into a monitor and look at the main display there.
Battery: Moderate (will most probably game with plugged in only; if use battery most probably doing something urgent and light but not game)
Weight: Doesn't matter much
RAM: 16GB
Storage: Aiming for 512GB SSD; If possible (doesn't have to be immediate as long as it has capacity to upgrade), including 1TB HDD to store other stuff

Wait Time: Hopefully within these few days / weeks as my current laptop died with constant BSOD on starting up

I'm looking at Acer Nitro 5 and Lenovo Legion 5 but if there's better choice do let me know!

3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) : good display as see alot colours, photoshop and illustrator, rendering.
Display: 15" above
Battery: Doesnt matter, always plug in. 80% plug in. 20% portable.
Weight: Doesn't matter
RAM: 16GB or higher
Storage: 512SSD or higher

Wait Time: max 4 weeks.


currently Im looking at Legion 5 Pro and Legion 5. These 2 model price can meet my budget with the lowest specs configuration. which 1 should I go for? or is there any better option?

I mainly do Illustrator, Photoshop, Keyshot, Solidworks. Need some suggestion from Sifus.

Oh but if you not in the rush, Acer almost launching the new Nitro 5 11th Gen with new RTX 30 series. Worth checking out before deciding! I have been using their Nitro 5 since May. Very good!

Yeah quite urgent, hoping to get within these few days or weeks cause my current laptop died already. I wanted to get Lenovo Legion 5 but seems like after some reading, it seems like need to wait for some time.

can consider the Helios 300 u found, however looks like it has a poor 144Hz 45% screen

since you planning to use external monitor, should be fine i guess
