Because Cantonese never abandoned the ancient tones, causing the language to be much more complex. This reminds me of this video. Turn on captions for English: aBg_rOnGak liked this post

QUOTE(Solar Calendar @ Apr 19 2020, 12:55 AM) I know HK follow Chinese script. Well... obviously. Their Cantonese words have direct a counterpart in Mandarin, like 你, is 'ni' in Mandarin and 'nei' in Cantonese. But our Cantonese, we say lei. Why are we so different? It's due to a thing call lazy a.k.a. 懒音Another example: 的 Mandarin: De HK: Dik Local: Gei 对 Mandarin: Dui HK: Deoi Local: Ngam U may find in YouTube for explanation To make it simple, its like simplified chinese, easier to pronounce Lot's of hker also doing this especially when they day 我 |

A lot of words used these days there has the "lazy" pronunciations, though. They stopped using the "ng" sound in front.
Like "ngam" becomes "am" and so on. Although this is catching on here as well due to TV influence. We used to do it correctly. Can think of it as how scholars are studying Korean and Japanese to learn how ancient Chinese pronounce their words. When it was borrowed over, the pronunciations stuck but Chinese kept evolving. Same like the Cantonese here. Some of it has been stuck from 1800s but Cantonese has continued evolving in China and Hong Kong, but TV shows has been synchronising us, though. |

Since I have roots from HK and visit 2 to 3 times a year (before fcuking COVID19 stopped all that), my nephews and nieces ensure my Cantonese is up to the mark - kids are brutal... no give face. Wrong word, wrong pronunciation, they’ll rip you apart hahaha.
