Analysis (6/7/2020) [Newer data]
Updated with newer data. Conclusion is slightly different
Still leaving the old data for comparison.

NOTE: I've only done this for MYR/SGD pair. MYR/USD or MYR/EUR might give different results

Conclusion (6/7/2020)
Transferwise is most expensive. Don't use it unless you don't have a choice or want 'average fee' so you don't have to calculate every time.
For amounts <RM2750, use Instarem.
For amounts >RM2750, use BigPay.

I would just include the RM 7 fee... ignore 1st xfer offer...this to be 'fair' comparison

I want to xfer... usd to myr, too bad bigpay don't support

Transferwise has a sweet spot I think if big amount it goes to a lower fee tier...

Yes. I included RM7 fee in my data. Although here didn't say:

user posted image

I included the RM7 cost by:

1) Subtracting RM7 from the MYR to be sent. E.g. Send RM100 but minus RM7.
2) So technically one is sending RM93 at their exchange rate of 0.324198.
3) The actual SGD received should be SGD 30.15 [(100-7) x 0.324198.]

This was already in my results above.

Nope.

The maximum you can transfer using Transferwise is RM30000.

Even at maximum of RM30000, you still get extra SGD5.12 transferring using Instarem.

RM30k is bank negara limit... Buy you can transfer a bit more than USD200k to MYR...

And it now seems that Instarem is cheaper... there was a time it flips over to Transferwise...lol

So I made a comparison to see which is the best.
Note: I did not transfer from BigPay yet so it did not charge a fee in my data. But their website says RM7 to Singapore banks. Hence, I deducted RM7 from the MYR to be sent before converting at their rates. Data: https://imgur.com/a/9yxkOtj

Conclusion (28/10/2019)
Transferwise is most expensive. Don't use it unless you don't have a choice.
For amounts <RM5000, use Instarem.
For amounts >RM5000, use BigPay (Based on RM7 fee to Singapore. I could not see the fee as my first transfer is free).

Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Actually there is another one which is cheaper than instarem. Is max pay. But I am not sure if is cheaper than BigPay.

BigPay max transfer is RM20k/transacrion or RM30k/month.

Thank you for the detailed analysis. This increased my confidence in using Instarem over BP.
I understand that BP would start to get cheaper at the MYR9k mark, but the difference would be too small to make a huge impact.

Got any validation for this info? I did ask CS previously, and they couldn't give me a definite answer.

Have used TW for a long time.
Their exchange rate into MYR used to be very good but their corresponding commission rate has been increased at least three times, IIRC.
As a result, the net exchange rate is closer to the bank's rate now.
The only good thing is the ability to lock in the rate when it is in your favor.

Hello sifus,

May I ask any alternatives for sending KRW to MYR?
It seems all 3 above does not support KRW.

I tried to search online but only found one "OSK" with minimum transfer 1000USD.

Have a nice day~

Received notification from Transferwise of Borderless Account closure. Must clear account by 14 May. Seems that this is affecting Malaysian resident only as you can still have your account reopened if you can prove that you are not Malaysian resident. Any other alternatives?

Thinking this means transferwise no use for anyone not sending money oversea in Malaysia since this cannot be use to receive any money from overseas (As you cannot keep money in transferwise for Malaysia).

It's a fee credit, it's not adding additional money to your balance, but rather only used when you're doing transfers. The fee is instead deducted from the credit you have, before touching your balance like usual.

A simple visit to instarem should answer your question. I wonder what is the first currency you see on instarem website.

I'd say it depends because sending USD to US financial institutions may have restrictions.
On the other hand, sending USD to Singaporean banks using Instarem is fine.

What was the rate previously?

I didn't realise they increased it. But I noticed recently that TW has been cheaper than Instarem that's why I've been using TW

The fee must be calculated as a % of amount transferred.
This varies according to the amount you transfer.

For example, in my previous conclusion (outdated now):
1) Instarem gives the lowest fee (% terms) if you transfer below RM5000
2) Big pay gives the lowest fee (% terms) if you transfer above RM10000
3) Transferwise is the worst. However, they give the best FOREX rates among the 2.

It's worth noting that some may give unfavourable rates to you (by pricing in the fee) despite stating low fees.

Edit: I updated with newer data since people seem to be interested.

roarus Tagging you too. Same conclusion for TransferWise but there's a new conclusion regarding Big Pay and Instarem.

Hi guys. If I wish to transfer money to China and I only have Western Union/Transferwise/Moneygram as options which would be the best one? Amount is less than rm2k.

Hope some experts can chip in on this. Really appreciate it. Tq.

If you're transferring for one of case and only RM2000, Instarem charges around RM15. You can shop around for the best rates or just settle for this.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately they don't have the instarem option. Only WU/transferwise/moneygram. Do you have any experience with moneygram before? I read the website and it seems I have to do it through their agents. Any one with relevant experiences with moneygram?

Hi,
I am looking to transfer USD from my Singapore account to Malaysia bank in MYR. So far I understand it can be done using Transferwise but Instarem indicate you can only trasfer out from Malaysia if you are a resident in Malaysia. Is this tru? Is TW the only vehicle to transfer USD back to Malaysia Myr ? Any other recomendation? I see BigPay also only can transfer out.
Thanks

You need to compare on the spot. I could tell you company A is better but it can change within the next few hours.

Nope.

The maximum you can transfer using Transferwise is RM30000.

Even at maximum of RM30000, you still get extra SGD5.12 transferring using Instarem.

What you complain? TW is already so cheap for MYR to JPY.

The only pair I ever saw IR a little bit cheaper is MYR/SGD. But also not always, right now TW is cheaper.

For EUR almost as good as TW and better than IR.

And for SGD much better than the other two, nice.

yeah it seems the MYR-SGD rate is the best among all, just that the transfer time seems would take T+2 business days for transactions submitted before 4.00pm Malaysia time, and up to T+3 business days for transactions submitted after 4.00pm., which is a bit slower

Because Transferwise charge higher fee.

You must measure based on input output method.
How much input you put in (MYR) and how much output you get (foreign currency).

This is because one company might charge higher fee but give good rates.
Another may lie to you and say low fee but give terrible rates.

Best is you register a few accounts: Instarem, TransferWise, BigPay and Sunway Money.
When you want to transfer, compare all the rates at one go. Once you find the best, go for that one.

Just an example using fictitious rates:

You transfer RM10,000. They quote:

Instarem: SGD 3,273.20
TransferWise: SGD 3,275.20
BigPay: SGD 3,270.20
Sunway Money: SGD 3,271.20

In this case, you should proceed with TransferWise because they give you the highest amount of SGD for your RM10,000.

Btw, my analysis might be outdated because they keep changing rates/fees to stay competitive.

All four will have different rates upon time of use. SO to get best rates you need to shop around. I can tell you TW maybe cheap but that's valid for say 10 minutes. Then in 10 minutes time TW maybe the most expensive.

Don't look at fees. Look at final amount of foreign currency you are getting.

Might save you few hundreds/thousands in the long run.
Like if it saves you RM30 per month, 1 year already save you RM360.
10 years save you RM3,600.

If lazy to set up then just go for TransferWise.

u dont need "much" time to try all four of them, u just need to open new tab for
instarem
transferwise
sunway money

and open ur mobile app big pay

key in the transfer from MYR amount, and check the final amount u will get, then u know which is the best.
unless u are telling me to register urself to each of it is troublesome, then beat it
albeit IMO the monie i saved by doing this is worth it

Ic (just take picture with your phone)
For bank statement download the bank statement in PDF and send email them.
Money match and TransferWise are fully online. You don't need to meet them in person to set up your account.

Yesterday I tried transferring via transferwise RM5000 to SGD and the fee was RM25 , and money match only charged me RM8, seems money match fee is much lower compare to transfer wise.

Rm30k as per fpx.
Don't look at fees. Look at final foreign currency you are getting.
Key in RM5K into all the providers, the one which give you the most foreign currency for the same RM5k is the cheapest.

Yeah that part I'm clear (OP is very well written), but day to day rates will change right? How often do InstaRem/TW etc. update their rates, and is it ever worth it to wait a few days (or transfer earlier than your planned)?

Yes they change everyday. One of them I think their rates change every 5 minutes. No I don't wait. Once I have collected sufficient amount of money, I just transfer over.

So far I see instarem is the most expensive of them all. They use to be cheap.

One question for Instarem users.

I performed a transaction to transfer MYR to SGD (my SG bank account) today, but then when I login to Instarem, I could no longer transfer HKD to MYR/SGD anymore.

The currency to be converted is fixed at MYR and can't be changed. Is this normal? As I have bank accounts in SG, HK and Malaysia, I will deal with currencies in HKD, SGD and MYR often, so being able to convert SGD/HKD into the other currencies is important for me.

Is there any way to solve this issue?

Thanks for help, sifus.

Instarem is country specific. You can only use it in the country you opened account in. If you want to transfer HK, best choice is TW.

You can try luck and see if world first, world remit accept you as a customer.

HK address not permanent, as it's my university hostel's address which only lasts for 3 years more for me, I don't want to transfer from an invalid address in the future and run into regulatory issues in HK.

TW is okay, their rates+charges only 1 dollar or so less than Instarem, good enough for not-so-frequent transfers.

Very poor security. And can expand into Singapore. Lol
Too and they have too many competitors there. No first mover advantage.
Youtrip (sg own version of bigpay, first mover), tw card, instarem card, revolut.

Hmm, what do you mean by it being country-specific? Meaning to say that if I am a Malaysian, I can only transfer out from Malaysia to other countries, but cannot transfer to Malaysia from other countries? So it only allow one way-out...

Also, are there any fintech companies that allow money to be transferred from Singapore to Malaysia? I know some don't allow that. Is it true that TW borderless account had been closed, if so, what are the other alternatives?

So far the ones with international presence are instarem and tw.
Instarem is country specific while TW is not. So yes instarem is only one way out.

Yes there are. Lots. Question is do they accept retail customer with no business dealings in Singapore. I only know of 2 which accept Malaysian. TW and one more I have not tested. So I can't comment yet.

Rumours said they blocked Malaysian to have access to borderless account. Only valid if you are new customer. If you are old customer like me, I still have access to my functioning borderless account.

Alternative? Wait for revolut to set up shop in Malaysia. If they are going to set up shop.

Hi all, I need to transfer USD from Cambodia to Malaysia. Previously, carried cash back but not feasible option now, so have to look for other means. Transferred using FTT via Maybank KH to Maybank MY - USD17 fees. Anyone have tried the options mentioned, looking for some reviews.

At the moment Transferwise doesn't have a bank set up in Cambodia, I'd have to pay to Barclays then the local stop in Malaysia pays out. I incur more fees from my Cambodian Bank to Barclays since it has couple of intermediary banks in between. Figures come up to 50$ plus which is a no brainer to not use. Scouting for something lower icon_question.gif

Is it just me or are TransferWise/InstaRem/BigPay all super much more expensive than SunwayMoney for SGD transfers now?

For 10k amount, the rates I'm seeing now are:-
BP - 3275.20 SGD (fees RM5)
Insta - 3270.22 SGD (fees RM45)
TW - 3271.82 SGD (fees RM56.72)
Sunway - 3281.71 SGD (fees RM-3.99)

Even though I have a RM60 transferwise coupon I'm not sure using it makes sense. Let's say I increase my transaction to 30k (only send 29940 from Sunway Money and TW to make comparison fair in terms of cost)

Sunway receives 9826.80
Instarem receives 9810.65
TW receives 9797.79

Is there something I'm missing here?

It depends on what currency you send. Best is to cross reference all before sending.
Like it's cheaper to send EUR using Transferwise than Sunway Money.

I'd like to deposit and withdraw fund from a trading account in GBP or EUR. Broker is based in UK. Which service allows me to receive transfers from broker back to me?

Sorry, off topic a bit.

I received this e-mail from InstaReM.

I can login to my InstaReM once a month, to ensure that my InstaReM account is active. However, if InstaReM 'forces' me to transfer money via InstaReM, I feel that this action is not right and fair, if I feel that InstaReM's currency exchange rate is not as competitive as their competitors'.

For example, InstaReM's fee for conversion of MYR to SGD was progressively increased from 4%, 4.5% to 5% now.

If they're not competitive then why are you worried for your account to be closed? Can always request re-open if needed in future (and verification is done online anyway).

Hi,

I have a question probably also off topic a bit as well.

If foreign company make monthly payment to me either to my Malaysian bank or Paypal.

Which option is better taking into account the cost that will be deducted from the money that I will receive.

Thank you for sharing your opinion, LostAndFound. smile.gif

I do have some concern that upon account reopening in the the future, Instarem may have more stringent requirements of supporting documents, since Instarem is already aware that I do not really actively use their remittance service.

Intially but I stopped using them after seeing that I am getting less foreign currency per RM. Don't know how many months I never use Instarem already. Nowadays it's Sunway money, Bigpay, Transferwise (whoever is the cheapest at that time - more foreign currency per rm)

Use transferwise or some other HK fintech remittance company. There's bound to be a lot in HK as it's a financial hub.

I plan to use Sunway Money to remit SGD to Singapore Savings Account. Some of the SGD fund will be used to invest in SGX.

So, can I declare the following, in Sunway Money website?

Purpose of Payment Category: Investment
Purpose of Payment: Corporate stocks and shares.

Or, should I declare the Purpose of Payment, as Deposit with financial institutions aboard?

Thank you for the clarification. smile.gif

Yes, I am investing in only SReits, in SGX. I have an account in Tradestation Global, similar to many of forum users here. And, I plan to invest in other stock exchanges, other than SGX.

I just did a comparison using my own sheet (thank you TS for the format), BigPay's winning by a big shot because it has fixed RM5 transfer compared to the other 2 charging proportionate to your transfer amount.
user posted image

(I've never used BigPay international transfer, so I minused the RM5 fee i.e. by inputting 995, 2995, 4995... to get the numbers)

I guess I'm going there this time haha, no more manual minus.

edit: Just read up past messages about SunwayMoney, added to list for quick comparison... still BigPay
I added the "special discounts" manually such that Total Payment tallies with the rest (with about 2 cent spread)

SunwayMoney has a much better rate now, but still very slightly losing out to bigpay on larger amount.
BigPay uses the exact same rate as yesterday night (12h ago), which was slightly higher, so the gap seems bigger to the other 2. I'm surprised to see Instarem and TW having such a shitty rate, in fact I used TW last year as it was the best at that time.

Conclusion:
1k = SunwayMoney
3k-10k=BigPay
20k+ = SunwayMoney
SunwayMoney is the best choice if BigPay indeed has max 10k/transfer. I didn't see anywhere in the app though... then again I don't have more than 10k to see the app rejecting my transaction lol.

What's your experience with sunway money? Do they often fuss for supporting documents? Submitted my e-kyc documents twice but they don't seem to be getting it thus stopped registering with them for now.
*
Sunway Money didn't allow my e-KYC, so I had to manually verify my identity at their booth in Sunway Pyramid. Was less than a day after that that I got the account working.

Is this Sunway Money good for sending tuition fees of Euro 42(per lesson per week) to Austria's bank account?

Compare the rates. I know Sunway money is good for SGD. Maybe TW is cheaper.

I just made my spreadsheet public for viewing so you can consider making a copy and do your own comparison. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DF1...#gid=1671928582

It should work for every currency conversion that google supports haha.

Don't bother with instarem. Nowadays they have lousy rates. I have not used them for almost a year already cause they are more expensive Vs others (I get less foreign currency when I use instarem Vs others)

The whole point of this thread is to compare the transfer rates offered by various parties everytime you want to make a transfer. Any fintech you can get your hands on means you should always add it to the list for comparison. There's no one true answer that is applicable forever because the rates are always changing, and some of them get promotional rates sometimes.

I do have to agree with Ramjade that Instarem's rate has been disappointing though. Of all 3 of my transfers since last year, Instarem was almost always in the last place. I don't actually have Instarem account atm because i heard the procedures are kind of a hassle (interview at their branch and whatnot..?), but the good thing about them is that I can compare their rates without logging in. Wise and BigPay have to log in, and BigPay is on the phone only.

Totally agree with you. Rates fluctuate all the time. My experience is kind of the opposite of you guys though. My Instarem rate is better than TW.

Compare all fintec you can register with.
Instarem
Wise
Sunway money
Big pay
Money match

I only used instarem for its first time because of referral promo, reduced RM25-ish or something. Other times it is usually TransferWise or Sunway Money that gives the best value.

Don't think sunway money has a customer-to-customer referrer code. If you check their facebook account last month they had an RM30 promo, the code on signing up is for those sort of code.

If sending RM200k to AUD or GBP, it's cheaper using CIMB cos don't have to incur many times charges cos max for Wise is only 30k per transaction right?

Sending RM30k to Oz cost RM160+. 200k is 7x ie. more than a thousand just on fees alone, rates is better now at CIMB for PB customer but need to check rate before sending and compare who's cheaper

Go compare with
Rm210k on CIMB
And RM30kx 7 using TransferWise. Don't look at the fees.

Look at final cash in AUD. What is important is final amount in AUD. If CIMB can give more AUD than TransferWise, then yes they are cheaper.

If they give you less AUD than transferwise means TransferWise is cheaper.

Sending huge amount sometimes you can try negotiating. Why not drop Wise and CIMB an email and ask them to quote you best price.

Even with special rate, always check with other fintech. Cause fintech are basically giving money changer rate and bank can never match money changer rate. Remember see final amount received.

1 Mil will take 34 days by Wise cos max a day is 30k. Can use Wise, Instarem and Sunway Money for total 90k a day. Sunway money has better rate for SG, difference can be SGD30-40 per MYR30k

As long as you are using banks get ready to be charged extra markup by 2-3% for each transaction/conversation. Only way is fintech then deposit into Interactive Broker and you can convert at market rate (even cheaper than fintech)

No use fintech to transfer to sg nank account. Then deposit SGD into interactive broker. From there convert using interactive broker. Interactive broker conversion rate is the lowest in town. No priority banking/fintech can beat their rates as they are giving you interbank rates. I don't think private bank also can get those rates. Cause the rates offer by Interactive broker is what the banks use to exchange currency among themselves.

You can convert millions and only pay USD2.00/conversion. That's it. No markup rates. No hidden fees. No extra fees.

They said that there is technical problem and the money bounced back to them when they try to transfer to my Malaysian bank account.

Weird, why not? I enabled MYR in my multi-currency account, funded it with FPX via bank transfer. When I paid for local merchant in MYR it deducted from my MYR wallet at 0 fee. Works fine for me.

I even withdrawn directly from IBKR to my GBP account and spend direct from there. It's everything I've wanted in one of my previous thread.

around 4.5% since the card is not US based (depend also on amount). If you use local card, then fees is cheaper. u will know before transfer as they will tell you before to proceed

Just came across WorldRemit ad when I looked up exchange rate for MYR to SGD... 5M+ app download versus Wise's 8M+, sounds pretty legit. Anyone heard of this or have any comment about it?

I just have a fraud transaction on BigPay yesterday. Suddenly a transaction pops up. Bigpay support also useless. Now cancelled my old card and get a new one. Seems like lots of frauds and scam with Bigpay. I think i will look into Transferwise instead. Lucky only RM40+ fraud transaction.

Last year got hit by fraudulent transaction they offered to reverse it... guess this year no more money? Either way only Bigpay gave me so much headache. Wondering if I should cancel it along with my parent's. It's just so damn bad now.

only wise can "pull" from other countries back to malaysia

Yeah Instarem still shit (3rd among that list). I guess bigpay just wanted to lure in customers initially, but we can only do our part to always compare.
Sunway Money registration was shit as I had to chase them like a month after I sent all my details, but upon chasing them, I got approved immediately. Transfer wise (no pun intended), Sunway rates has been really good XD I also confirmed I got the money this morning.

I am saying those digital banks like grab, Shopee are losing money with their grab and Shopee app.

So for them to offer digital banking at loss is something they might not do.

TransferWise is do have profits and they are listed in LSE.

I am saying those digital banks like grab, Shopee are losing money with their grab and Shopee app.

So for them to offer digital banking at loss is something they might not do.

TransferWise is do have profits and they are listed in LSE.

Out of curiosity, anyone know how singapore work for grab and shopeee on digital bank. I dont think they offer saving and tt to other country.

Hi,

I read Instarem provides discount on the first transfer. Someone said rm 200 - that's quite high! Is it still valid? And if so, how to get that discount?

Besides, are there any other fintech that provides new user discount and are as good as Instarem?

Thanks

I found this: https://www.instarem.com/info/offers-coupon-code

Anyway, I noticed that in recent times Instarem's rates are worse than Wise and Sunway Money. Instead, they promote and market themselves more aggressively whereas I receive little to nothing from Wise/Sunway Money.

Not aware of other service providers' discounts. But if you don't transfer money that often, don't get carried away by marketting tricks like promo codes. You won't use them that often and sometimes, waiting for a currency pair to move in your favour would give you more "discounts" than that from service providers like Instarem, Wise or Sunway Money.

The promo codes only last for a while. Don't be penny wise, pound foolish. Choose a reliable service provider which gives you the narrowest spread from the interbank market rates after factoring in all "all-in" cost should be your prime consideration.

Just my 2 cents.

Avoid instarem. I haven't use them for years. Lousy rates.

No you cannot. You can only send MYR out. I suggest you look for fintech in AU which can do what Sunway money does. So many Vs in Malaysia.
Xe I believed can, world remit/wise/ofx. Just Google. Key in aud10k, select MYR. Choose the one which give the most rm per aud.

Managed to open Sunway Money account within 3 working days, but that's with 1 day of nothing happening. 3rd working day terus email them, then shortly after they activate the account.

As of 4.20pm today, 10000 MYR to SGD is as follows:
Wise: SGD3091.70
BigPay: SGD3101.54
Sunway Money: SGD 3100.00 (RM9999.00 + RM1 fee)

Don't think sunway money has a customer-to-customer referrer code. If you check their facebook account last month they had an RM30 promo, the code on signing up is for those sort of code.

Does sunway money has any ongoing referral program now?

adam1190 can u double confirm with sunwaymoney? i suspect there is no ongoing referral now.

as in, they have a mechanism for referrals, but they nerfed it to "disable it". instead of just straightaway hiding this referral
