Thanks, but I just want to confirm that Plex can't stream 4k HDR HEVC to browser. Or more specifically, to browser in Windows.

Best devices for Plex 4K HDR playback:

Top Tier: Nvidia Shield Pro
Mid to Top tier: Apple TV 4K
Lower Tier: Firestick 4K Max

Plex on browser sucks for 4K HDR playbacks.

Thanks. Looks like the issue only on windows, even Plex app only support 8bit 4k 30fps mp4 HEVC. While most newer ARM device can support HEVC.

Anyone here that watch 4k HDR HEVC movie using Plex?

From what I read, Plex can't stream 4k HDR HEVC to browser, or rather most browser doesn't support HEVC playback. So do you have to transcode it to H264? Or there's way to get browser to playback HEVC?

If use on something else such as Android media box, Plex can stream 4k HDR HEVC to the device?
*
Plex is fully supported 4K HDR HEVC.

My ranking of supported device
  • (1) Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 - fully supported included Dolby Atmos in TrueHD.
  • (2) Apple TV 4K - all track auto transfer to Multi Channel PCM, supported only Dolby Atmos in Dolby Digital 5.1, Apple TV is running better using Infuse.
  • (3) Chromecast with Google TV - cannot playback if track is TrueHD, need transcode the audio track.
Most Smart TV Plex is too slow and the interface is choppy and cannot playback REMUX 4K HDR.

My PC Plex is fully supported 4K HDR HEVC REMUX in 10-bit HDR.

Only Dolby Vision not support, this is due to Dolby did not implemented well in Windows, connected to Dolby Vision supported display, example my LG C9 also same cannot support.

You should using Plex Client for Windows or Plex HDPC.
The Web version is poorly optimize by Plex.

You using Plex Client for Windows? Any HEVC video can be playback without need to transcode?

What I read online is Plex Client can only playback HEVC natively if the video is in MP4 container, HEVC, 8bit, 4k resolution and 30fps.
If any of the parameters not same as that it cannot playback natively, the server will transcode to H264.
Maybe that one I read is old post as I see Plex got update it's software few months ago.

No transcode, normally transcode the HDR will gone and my movies 99% is in MKV format.

My New PC was purchase in year 2020 with HDR support monitor LG 34GN850 and now using Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, means it is at least 2 years support Direct Play HEVC from Plex.

Screenshot below showing it is Direct Play using Plex Client. My CPU usage is from 0% to around 10%, such CPU usage means they is no transcode during playback.

Below screenshot wise is taken using Plex HTPC apps and you can seen it is also Direct Play.

Also I always set my PC in 10-bit with HDR ON.

Thanks. Ya, H264 don't have HDR so I was wondering how Plex user watch it if it transcode from HEVC to H264.

Most hardware from few years ago already support for HEVC so it will better to have client side decoding it especially since size is smaller in HEVC.

Top Gun Maverick...

Stars tom cruise, jennifer connelly + val kilmer, ed harris guest starring.

well directed by joseph kosinksi (tron legacy, oblivion).

story is simple but relates well to the original with the style, characters and great rock music.

great air combat dogfight scenes - f18, f14 tomcat, sukhoi su-57, SAMs + animation... thumbup.gif

i find the ddtrehd/atmos audio v good, highly immersive. thumbsup.gif 4/5.

tom cruise is looking good - will see him again next year in Mission Impossible 7!

Yup, I think the article you read is wrong. Plex is long support HEVC.

HEVC is smaller but one REMUX 4K HDR still need around 50 GB to 110 GB depends on how long the movie are.

Ya the 4K UHD Blu-ray Dolby Atmos TrueHD track is freaking good, but it is very bad in stream version Dolby Atmos DD track. I think you wait until now just watch is the correct idea. I too want to watch and pick the stream version and it is not that great the soundtrack.

EAC3+Atmos is meant for online streaming.

bit rate far from DDTrueHD+Atmos meant for local playback.

good things come to those who wait! tongue.gif

Top Gun Maverick is one of those rare home release Atmos tracks that makes decent use of the height speakers. Not amazing, certainly could be better but compared to about 90+% of the Atmos movies out there, it's one of the better ones.

Overall sounds good, but could be better.

Thank goodness Auro-3D exists.

Agreed. I think for this movie Auro-3D sounds better. But I haven't truly made any proper comparison, just switching about during critical scenes.
