The above list is the Indonesian Air Force procurement plan in the final and 3rd Minimum Essential Force (MEF) Program 2020 - 2024 presented by the TNI Chief to the Indonesian Parliament for briefing & approval. The 3rd MEF will start in January 2020. TNI must achieve its target by the end of 3rd MEF in 2024. Let see how it goes in terms of budget.

Iinm the F-16V is to equipped new fighter jet squadrons. The 21 units LIFT aircrafts in the list is for the Hawk replacement. The frontrunner is the TA/FA-50.

Article here: https://www.janes.com/article/92416/saab-fl...-for-first-time

Pic above looks like the pod in the middle, between the fuel tank and the wingtip IRIS-T

It has AESA and supposedly powerful EW suite, can fire cruise missiles, antiship missiles, AMRAAM, AIM9X and Maverick, Meteor, LGBs, and usually comes with AWACS offered with... sounds good?

Although I'm skeptical if the plan is achieved in 2024, but TNI has a good plan. I see a consistency and continuation with the previous aquisitions.

I can understand now why TNI preffer 2 sq F-16 then 1sq of F-35. Not only can TNI get more fighters but also fill the need of a cheap operational cost, familiar but capable fighter to perform patrol/daily task. A combo of F-16 and TA-50 is much less headache in maintenance.

The MRTT and AEW&C will give a big boost there.

I'm also a bit skeptical. But lets see how its goes in the next 5 years. I'm curious to see what TNI-AD & TNI-AL procurement plan is in 2020 - 2024.

Regarding the Air Refueling Tanker and AEW&C, Boeing is pitching the KC-46 Pegasus and B737 AEW&C Wedgetail. The Indonesian Air Force have evaluated several air refueling tanker aircrafts including Airbus A330 MRTT in its report and the result is in favor with the KC-46 Pegasus. The AEW&C is to replace TNI-AU aging B737 Surveiller.

Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government will provide RM90 million to set up the Sarawak Coastal Guard to complement the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and Marine Police in Sarawak coastline protection duties.

He said this during the tabling of the Sarawak 2020 budget at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, Kuching on Tuesday.

"In protecting Sarawak coastal areas, marine resources, and Marine Park from external threats and encroachment, the State proposes to set up the Sarawak Coastal Guard to complement the APMM and Marine Police in Sarawak coastline protection duties. A sum of RM90 million will be provided for this purpose.

In this regard, we will also review the Sarawak Fisheries Ordinance, 2003 to strengthen regulatory enforcement in the State riverine and coastal waters."

Or better yet, allocate some coastal land for free to the APMM/polis marin to set up more forward bases so that patrol coverage will be more extensive.

Malaysian Coast Guard, Australian Border Force conclude Operation REDBACK XIV

user posted image
Malaysian and Australian officials on the closing ceremony of Operation REDBACK XIV

Australia and Malaysia today announced the successful conclusion of Operation REDBACK XIV, a joint border protection exercise to fight maritime crime in the Malacca Strait, near Langkawi, Kedah.

Director of Maritime Enforcement and Coordination Division, First Admiral Nurul Hizam bin Zakaria said, this Operation REDBACK XIV focused on people smuggling and human trafficking, these are two key issues of concern for the Australian and Malaysian governments. The Operation shows the close relation between Malaysia Coast Guard and Australian Border Force in sharing intelligence and expertise on border security to reinforce combined effectiveness and capability.

“The close ties between Malaysia and Australia has definitely contributed the success of this 14th Operation Redback in combatting maritime security threat together. We both have significant maritime borders; we are serious about cooperating on security in our region and are committed to combatting threats in the maritime domain,” said Nurul Hizam.

He also added that Malaysia is currently facing the movement of people from Myanmar to Malaysia, and that in 2015, it is estimated about 25,000 people travelled across the Andaman Sea and went to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Therefore, this operation provides a significant opportunity for Malaysia to improve its maritime border response capabilities.

Deputy Commander for Australia’s Operation Sovereign Borders, Australian Border Force Commander Tony Smith said that Operation Redback was an important deterrent to illegal maritime activity and that the issue of maritime people smuggling has not gone away.

“The victims of these transnational crimes are tricked by criminals and their lives are put at risk. The threats are very real so we all have an important role to play defeating these syndicates and saving lives at sea.” Commander Smith said.

In June 2019, Australia’s Operation Sovereign Borders launched an information campaign, Zero Chance of Illegal Migration, warning that anyone who tries to come to Australia illegally by boat will be intercepted and returned.

“We want people in the region to understand the truth so they will not be exploited by people smugglers. This policy is designed to deny people smugglers a product to sell, protect Australia’s borders and importantly, prevent deaths at sea,” Commander Smith said.

Nurul Hizam said, so far this year, the Malaysia Coast Guard has disrupted 768 cases involving people smuggling and maritime crime activities, with 120 cases of undocumented immigrants with 725 undocumented immigrants from several neighbouring countries have been arrested. This success underlines the value of this joint training exercise like Operation Redback.
