ADEX 2019: RMAF Conduct Tests On KAI FA-50 Fighting Eagle

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has recently conducted flight tests on the South Korean-made KAI FA-50 Fighting Eagle as part of its Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program. The flight test was conducted at the backdrop of Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX 2019) held in Seoul where the Chief or the Air Force and the Commander of 1st Air Region have made paid a visit to Republic of Korean Air Force (ROKAF)’s 8th Fighter Wing in Wonju.

The 8th Fighter Wing is responsible for 103rd Fighter Squadron and 239 Special Flying Squadron (better known as the Black Eagles Aerobatic Flying Team). These squadrons respectively operate the KAI FA-50 Fighting Eagle and KAI T-50B Golden Eagle.

The Black Eagle had performed in Malaysia during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) 2017 show using the  T-50B variant with smoke generators. The B variant is specially modified from the T-50A Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) and is equivalent to the Malaysians’ BAe Hawk Mk 108 trainers.

Having said that, the battle proven FA-50 is the armed variant of the T-50 which is equipped with radar as well as the ability to fire and dispense AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air-missile (AAM), AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground-missile (AGM) and Mk 80 series unguided bombs. The FA-50 has prove its ability in combat over Marawi in the Philippines. A similar variant, the T-50IQ has also being involved in combat operations over northern Iraq.

The FA-50 is seen as possible candidate to replace the BAe Hawk Mk 208 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) aircraft which has also seen combat actions over Lahad Datu, Sabah during Ops Daulat in 2013. Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) is also operating BAe Hawk Mk 209 but has planned to replaced them either with additional T-50/FA-50 or F-16V ‘Viper’ Falcon in the next decade.

Under the LCA program, the RMAF intends to replace its Alenia MB-339CM LIFT with trainer variant of the LCA by 2025 and its BAe Hawk Mk 108/208 by 2030. It has already tested Russian made, Irkutsk built Yakovlev Yak-130 (NATO Reporting Name: Mitten) during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) 2019 show last March.

The test over Wonju was conducted by the Commander of 1st Air Region, Mej Jen Dato’ Zahani Zainal Abidin TUDM, a former instructor pilot of Boeing F/A-18D Hornet strike fighter.

Argentina plans to purchase FA-50 Fighting Eagle aircraft

user posted image

The Government of Argentina is reportedly interested to procure FA-50 Fighting Eagle aircraft from the Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI).

The FA-50 fighter jet has been selected after the completion of an evaluation, Jane’s reported citing an unidentified Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina – FAA) official.

If a firm contract is signed, the FA-50 will serve as FAA’s new interim fighter aircraft.

According to the officer, the government expects to approve the planned purchase of the supersonic, twin-seat light fighter and attack aircraft ‘in the near future’.

The aircraft will replace the airforce’s Dassault Mirage III and Mirage 5 fleets that retired in 2015.

The publication reported that the deal will infuse a new lease of life in the fleet as the ageing Douglas A-4R Fightinghawk fleet is proving increasingly ‘difficult and costly to maintain’.

Argentina sent a team to the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (RoKAF’s) 16th Fighter Wing at Yecheon in September 2016.

At that time, an FAA pilot performed testing of TA-50 Golden Eagle aircraft. TA-50 is an operational trainer variant of the FA-50 fighter jet.

The report added that the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Kfir, the Dassault Mirage F1, the Alenia M-346FT, the Aero L-159 ALCA, the CAC FC-1/PAC JF-17 Thunder, the Saab Gripen, early-model Eurofighter Typhoons were in consideration by the FAA.

Argentine media sources stated that the government is looking to purchase ten FA-50 fighters.

The aircraft features multimode radar, fly-by-wire digital flight controls, integrated identification friend or foe (IFF), night-vision imaging system and embedded GPS/INS.

The FA-50, which is developed by KAI in partnership with Lockheed Martin, can be armed with AIM-9 missile, MK-82, AGM-65 missile, internal 20mm gun, among other munitions.

Indonesia seeks C-130J deals with US

Indonesia is looking to secure deals with the United States government to procure Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules transport aircraft and to facilitate industrial co-operation in relation to the platform, the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has stated.

The MoD said in a press release that it had advanced both topics in meetings in Jakarta on 22 October between the MoD's secretary general Agus Setiadji and the US' acting deputy assistant secretary of defence for South and Southeast Asia, Christopher Johnston.

"The meeting discussed defence industry co-operation, particularly in the procurement of the C130J Hercules," said the MoD. "In addition, the [MoD] hopes that in the future the US can help accelerate the process of procuring the C130J Hercules."

Jane's understands that Lockheed Martin responded to a request for information issued by the MoD in mid-2018 in support of a plan to procure transport aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Udara: TNI-AU).

Air Commodore Novyan Samyoga, the chief of information in the TNI-AU, had previously confirmed to Jane's that the service has identified the platform as a priority procurement given the age of some of the service's existing transport aircraft. In the first phase of the procurement, the TNI-AU is expected to procure five platforms if sufficient funding is available.

Malaysian defence white paper will aim to develop a modern 'Smart Army'

user posted image

The forthcoming Defence White Paper, set to be tabled in Parliament in December, will focus on developing a modernised ‘smart army’.

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said that the idea was to forge towards a new dimension by optimising computers, cyberspace technology and state-of-the-art systems.

This, he said, will reduce the reliance on traditional equipment and armaments like battle tanks, ships and weaponry.

“This means we will emphasise on unmanned aerial vehicles, drones and cyber security-related equipment towards achieving a comprehensive defence for the country.

“Much of the budget towards this effect will come from the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans,” he said speaking to reporters at the ‘Perwira 4 Dialogue’ themed ‘Defence White Paper: Defending the Nation’ with civil society organisations and Armed Forces veterans here.

The dialogue was organised by the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security (Midas).

Mohamad said that the ‘smart army’ concept was not new as several countries such as Australia had already implemented it.

Countries like Australia have downsized their armed forces and paid more attention towards the use of state-of-the-art equipment and cyber-space warfare,” he said.

Mohamad said that other nations like South Korea, the United States, Great Britain, Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines and Singapore had long implemented their Defence White Paper.

“Singapore, for instance, sets aside four to five per cent of its gross domestic product annually for its national defence.

“They also take into consideration an annual four per cent factor for inflation,” he said.

On the dialogue, Mohamad said that it was the last forum to obtain input and new ideas before the Defence White Paper was finalised and tabled in Parliament.

Asked on the urgency in tabling the Defence White Paper, he said although the country no longer faced tension from the times of the Confrontation with Indonesia and the communist insurgency (that ended with a peace treaty in 1989), threats to the country’s sovereignty still exist.

“There are still people out there who want to use various forms of economic, social, political and psychological threats to challenge the government.

“Therefore, we must be alert and vigilant at all times,” he said, referring to the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) facing threats from pirates and militants from the Philippines.

Mohamad said many assumed that as the world progressed, it would be more peaceful.

“On the contrary, just look at the scenario in the Middle East, north Africa and the Arab peninsular which face endless conflicts,” he said.

He recalled how radio and television broadcasts were effective in disseminating patriotism during the challenging times in the 1960s through the 1980’s against the communist terrorist threat.

To this end, Mohamad said Malaysia strongly advocates defence diplomacy with its regional neighbours via bilateral and multi-lateral engagements to ensure continued peace and stability.

AFAIK....A400 is not TNI choice. It is their other ministry choice to help distribute logistics,. TNI act as operator only.

But indonesia national carrier, Garuda Indonesia, has a better option to use drone. They are planning to buy 100 cargo drone if the test which is conducted now is a success.

The A400M is not for the Indonesian Air Force. The Indonesian Air Force 31st Airlift Squadron wishlist is the C-17 Globemaster. Don't know where they will get it though as the C-17 Globemaster production is already closed.

Airbus prioritises A400M in Asia-Pacific region

25 OCTOBER, 2019 SOURCE: FLIGHTGLOBAL.COM BY: GREG WALDRON SEOUL

Airbus Defence & Space sees the A400M tactical transport as its top sales priority in the Asia-Pacific region, while also eyeing opportunities for tankers and support aircraft.

Johan Pelissier, head of Asia-Pacific at the airframer, says the two markets with the most potential for the A400M are South Korea and Indonesia.

“I definitely see rising interest from the Koreans in order to meet future requirements,” he says.

Pelissier points out that the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) has had a chance to see the A400M in action with other operators during humanitarian missions in the region, and says the type would complement the service’s existing Lockheed Martin C-130Hs. So far, the only Asia-Pacific customer for the A400M is the Royal Malaysian Air Force, which operates four examples.

“The A400M can deliver twice the payload for the same range, or go twice the range with the same payload,” he says. “Its reach and payload are definitely of interest for potential customers. It can also do missions that are not possible today.”

Pelissier made the remarks during a media roundtable at the Seoul ADEX show earlier in October.

FlightGlobal understands that discussions are under way between Madrid and Seoul for a possible swap deal involving the exchange of A400Ms for Korea Aerospace Industries T-50 advanced jet trainers and KT-1 basic trainers. Pelissier, however, declines to comment.

Cirium fleets data shows that Spain has five in-service A400Ms, with 22 more on order, and that its trainer fleet is ageing. It operates 63 CASA C-101 advanced jet trainers with an average age of 37.5 years. Other assets used in the same role include 19 CASA-produced Northrop F-5Ms with an average age of 50.3 years. Its air force also operates 34 ENAER T-35 basic trainers.

South Korea’s 12 C-130Hs have an average age of 31.4 years.

In Indonesia, talks are ongoing for two A400Ms that would be operated by government-owned Pelita Air Service. In March 2017, Airbus and the Indonesian firm signed a letter of intent for the possible deal.

“[Jakarta is] very interested in having an aircraft that can go from Java to extreme parts of Indonesia such as Papua to deliver a lot of goods. That is the aim of this Air Bridge project. We are still in discussions, but I can’t share further details,” Pelissier says.

The Malaysian government has not acknowledged that harassment and generally avoids mentioning the years-long CCG presence. But authorities are clearly aware, as evidenced by Royal Malaysian Navy vessels that infrequently monitor the Chinese patrols. For example, RMN Warships 3502 and 176 each patrolled near the Haijing 3306 at Luconia Shoals for at least two days in September and October 2018. Most recently, the Ka Bunga Mas 5, a Malaysian navy auxiliary ship, has been operating as close as 2 nautical miles from the Haijing 5401, which began patrolling the area on September 22.

We would need a lot of OPVs to 24/7 patrol our SCS EEZ

Then got the rest of our coast also lagi... pinoy side...

If we could get voters to allocate lets say another Rm 5 billion to the annual security budget for this purpose alone, let's say to mass produce and operate those MMEA OPVs... how many could we put into the water?

TNI AU borong dua Skadron F-16 Viper 2020-2024

user posted image

2 sq F-16 V?
33(present)+32(new)=65 units F-16
Looks like indonesia is serious buying F-16V next year. A smart move to avoid CAATSA for buying SU-35.
TNI will have a strong AF
