bank will decide if the replacement card fee to be imposed, based on nature of replacement request.

if the fault is with cardholder (eg lost, misplaced, etc), then you are liable for the fee.

if the fault is with the physical card (eg chip not working, contactless not working, cannot pay at merchant, etc), then usually bank will replace it FOC.


since more new cards are not embossed but rather using thermal printing, not sure diminishing of printed details can get foc or not. this happens due to wear-and-tear when inserting/removing the card from wallet, causing the printing to diminish/worn off.
