pity hammys... my mice at home take so good care of their babies..

eh, the bear bear is cute ler, but i prefer the shorter hair type of syrian.. whats it called ah??
*
Short haired Syrian loh hehehehe....

But then rarely can we find such big and fat ones at petshops.... normally petshops all very scrawny or sickly or small size.

Mice different, their mothering instinct is very strong compared to hamsters tongue.gif

Recently (2 days ago), my momo head a bit senget to the right.  sad.gif  sad.gif
She is ok in the morning when i go to work but the head become a bit senget when i come back around 8pm.
She still eat ok, run in her wheels as usual - just that she always look at me with the head a bit senget to the right most of the time. She also likes to stand on both her hind legs but now I notice she has a bit difficulty doing so since her head a bit senget, she will lose her balance and topple. I check her body - there is sign of injury and she is still active. Is she going to be alright? I am worried.... sad.gif  sad.gif
*
Ohhh.... senget means ear infection loh.... internal ear infection. Bring to a vet to check... but sadly, I got no idea which vet would treat hamsters well. You can call up your usual vet, explain head tilt in hamster. Losing balance and tilting head is internal ear infection.

Thanks for the info.
I will call my GR vet in a while - but not sure whether he treats hamster or not. In fact, I don't know if any of the vet in ipoh treats hamster.  sad.gif
Do you have any idea what causes the internal ear infection?
*
Well... sometimes head tilt got 2 possibilities.... 1 is stroke, another is ear infection.... but if off balance a bit then most likely ear infection lah. Stroke normally followed by paralysis.

Bacteria is most likely the cause of it and your hamster would need antibiotics.

habitrail ovo design really cool...but its better for syrian i guess, not for the others

just got winter pearl last monday....yay...
the 'long' search have ended..huhu
*
That is one of Habitrails worst cage design. It may look nice and nicer to hold than other habitrail cages, but the ventilation is super bad. The space is super small and where the water bottle is located is kinda wrong too.... The older cages like Safari, Playground and Space Station is much better.

QUOTE(won @ Nov 16 2007, 09:04 AM)
I think it would be worst for syrian coz they are bigger size than the rest of the hamster, since the space is really small.
*
Agree loh.

QUOTE(nezumitaro @ Nov 16 2007, 09:28 AM)
hehheh also it depance on what the size of the syrian. petshop one always small.. but i am lazy cleaner.. hehhe i prefer tank tongue.gif if its a big syrian... it can be stuck tongue.gif
*
Tank easier.... cage ah.... bedding fly everywhere, bars become rusty coz kena chewed.... although ventilation is much better than tanks, the cleanliness and also overall health is better.

Got 1 petshop.... sigh... in Petaling Street lah, had like 10 baby syrians.... about 12 days old I think coz haven't open eyes.... shop owner said supplier just delivered like that with the normal young syrians and he didn't notice got those babies.... I took 2, fed them, played with them.... luckily they drink the puppy replacement milk. Now fully open eyes, fat fat babies hahahah.... kinda cute. But pity, the petshop don't have time to feed them, give only turnip and corn....

Hamster species should never mix.... Syrians, WW, RC, Robos, Chinese.... all should be on their own, never introduce a different species into the same tank or cage....

wat to do ha?? its getting bigger n bigger  cry.gif  cry.gif  cry.gif

Hmmm.... you visit the Vet Thread and call the vets near to your place and ask them if they treat hamsters or not. That's the only way to know. My gerbil had a swollen cheek.... vet found out it was a facial tumour, so I put my gerbil to sleep coz suffering and cannot be operated. Sometimes, things cannot be done coz the hamster or rodent is too small.... but better you call up some vets.

QUOTE(holyghost @ Nov 17 2007, 08:01 PM)
jy14 ... i thought even same species but as long as they not from same 'clan', its bad idea to mix them. is it not, hun? hamster cant be intro like gerbils, right?  unsure.gif
*
Hamsters.... about the clan thing.... yups, you cannot intro a new hamster to an original colony, very likely fights would happen. Introduction is a bit similar, neutral ground and all but then gerbils identify each other through smell and saliva.... hamsters are more onto smell.... So normally putting a dot of perfume on the back of each hamster's neck can lessen fights during introduction.... but still, if me lah, I rather not have hamster colonies, better just a pair or single.

Just came back from PetZone in Uptown DU. They've got 2 cute WW and its really white. The boss say when they grow up, might turn brown. Izzit bcoz dirty then turn brown ? hehe

Wanna grab the pair, but dunno r they bro and sis or not, the boss say not la, can b trusted ah ? its WW with black eyes and pure white furs. Any advice from the gurus ?
*
You sure WW? Try and take a pic.... Do not ever trust these kinda petshop owners.... does he know? All rodents normally come from the same supplier, if both are white, there is a high chance that it may be siblings.

Turn brown? Strange.... WW are white hamsters with a light grey or dark grey dorsal stripe on their back. The intensity of the grey can vary from very dark to very pale.

Also, you must look at the facial features. Many do not know how to differentiate RC and WW. When I posted my BEW RC, all thought WW pearl.... but it is actually a RC.

If it is best if you only take 1.... petshops also can wrongly tell the sex, later you end up inbreeding...

Am thinking of getting a Syrian. Can anyone advice where to get?
I know Nezu is a  Syrian breeder but need to wait for few more people.

Would Pet Shack have Syrians? I also would like to purchase the whole set for the Syrian.

Would the habitrail safari or OVO suffice for the syrian? Please advice notworthy.gif
*
Do not get the OVO, I think I have mentioned it before and also some of the others did too about Ovo, it may look nice but it is infact the WORST design for health. Ventilation is super limited, a hamster would be smelling it's own ammonia and also fumes from the wood shavings. Go for the Safari and add extensions, much better.

Yah, get from Pet Shack. I got 1 Syrian that I bought from Pet Shack, such an angel. Tame and round.

wub.gif I love both of them!!!! So cute!!! Where u get them from?  hmm.gif Is that better to get a young one or an older one for syrian? pls advise.
*
The best age is getting at around 5 weeks old. I got experience with baby hamsters so I took the risk with 2 week olds.... also it was kinda like rescuing them since the petshop fed 2 week old hamsters with turnip and corn. There were about a dozen but I took only 2 coz I can't save old.

But if you get from a good seller, then any age older than 5 weeks would do. I just got an adult from Pet Shack and she is totally tame and friendly. Big too. If you get from say petshops that do not care about their hamsters then you will have a harder time handling them. They would be too jumpy, afraid of hands and people, some may bite out of fear coz the petshops handle them roughly.

When I took those 2 week olds, I actually had to handfeed them milk every 3 times a day, and luckily they were already trying out and eating solids. A mixture of good hamster mix and fresh veggies gave them better health.

What you can do is go to any petshop you visit, and check their Syrians. Some petshops take care of them really well till the hamsters are really tame and healthy, some would not bother and feed low quality food, resulting in skinny, sickly hamsters.

Aiyah... go Pet Shack easy.

Putra LRT, stop at Kelana Jaya, then hop onto bus 623, RM1 only. Takes you to Sunway Pyramin Entrance. Then cross the road by using the overhead bridge and walk towards McD.

KL Sentral also can, but I forgot the bus that goes there, RM2 buses.

*
You drop there, walk over to the Subang Carrefour's front, got 1 bus stop at the opposite side of the road. Bus 623 also goes there but just a slightly longer journey to Sunway. How much is the taxi from the KTM?

Here is sangels and mine, Remy and Jery, robos. Very notty fellas.

We are planning to get a Cinnamon Banded Syrian this weekend from Pet Shack. And currently not sure which cage to get. Should we get a Habitrail Mini for the robos and let the Habitrail Safari for the Syrian? Or just get another Habitrail Safari? Or an aquarium like what Nezu says? So much choices... sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
*
Heheheh.... Remy and Jery are cute.

Right now I got Robos as well. 3 females are in a Safari Cage and they really enjoy going up and down, the wheel is spacious for them.

Another Robo, a male is in a Habitrail Mini.... from what I have seen, Safari is better. Wheel easier to clean and better for running. Of course the Mini looks cute lah like the hanging wheel, the hanging hide house and the water oasis bottle.... I prefer using the normal bottles anyway heheheh.

For Syrian, it is better to keep in a tank or aquarium. More spacious, you can use your creativity to decorate it too. And you can view your hamster better without the cage bars heheheh.

Great! Remember to share pictures.

Organic powder, you should have just mentioned it, then Joan, the owner would hand it to you. It is certainly very useful to increase the fiber in their diet.
