Robos are fragile. Must take away the wheel, change to a solid one for ease of running and less prone to injury. The wire mesh can injure their feet as well. So yah, better you take those away.

The smallest dwarf species is Robos... they are the miniatures of all dwarfs. Winter Whites and Russian Campbells are dwarfs, same as the Chinese dwarf hamster.... and yah, they are obviously bigger than robos lah but they are smaller than Syrians. WW, RC and Chinese hamsters all got the dorsal stripe running down the spine.... only the Albino, Black Eyed White and certain other colours lack in the dorsal stripe.

There is only 1 large species of hamster and that is Syrian, the rest all considered dwarfs.
I like Winter Whites and Campbells more, they interact more with me and are not timid.... robos are just so timid and fast and sometimes scared crazy LOL. |

QUOTE(goldfries @ Sep 21 2007, 10:42 AM) eh my female hammy keep whacking my male hammy. whack until squeal like no tomorrow. Hmmm... sometimes some females don't go well with males. Actually, dwarf hamsters are sometimes very hard to pair coz you must know if they are compatible or not. Like human lah, if 2 person don't like each other, of course it would be very hard to be friends.... but humans can reason and understand each other so it won't be so violent hahahah.....the thing is the lady keep on whacking his groin area. i donno why. can someone enlighten me? If this happens so often, if a bite does become serious, it could lead to infection. So it would be much better to separate. Or what you can do is try a neutral place. Put the male in a cardboard box that is new. Then place the female inside. Normally when the territory is new, hamsters won't feel the urge to fight over.... but say at neutral place and your female still attack him, then it means your female is best kept alone. Hamsters like to attack vulnerable places.... it can be the base of the tail, the mouth or groin or throat... which ever is easier to get hold off. |

You have to separate the male. They will immediately breed again and you will then be overbreeding your female. That is not good rite?

Becareful, if you are feeding sweet things to RC hamsters, they are prone to get diabetes.... which is quite bad for them.

QUOTE(arren86 @ Sep 23 2007, 11:54 PM) I think the male one is comfortable itself. I cutted off 2 bottle 1.5 litre and combine it together (using me creativity, i managed to do so) so that he can run here and there. It looks like more fun than the cage. He is doing fine. Run here and there is not the meaning of comfortable, it is stressed. Hamsters when stress would not stop running up and down. They will scratch the container and look for ways to come out. It may look fun to you, but not to the hamster. Please, just get a tank or storage box, rm20 is not that bad. And babies, where are you gonna house them? You would need to separate the males and females away from each other or they will breed. They can breed as early as 5 weeks old and inbreeding is really bad.You need to be responsible, have the money and also knowledge to breed any pet. So if you can't afford another cage or tank, why breed? QUOTE(-Abtic- @ Sep 24 2007, 01:27 AM) Hahaha... don't worry lah, they will know how to eat them. Don't pamper your robos, later they will always want you to peel for them.QUOTE(jy14 @ Sep 24 2007, 01:40 AM) Greetings to all experts and fellow forumers, Well, from my experience, it is better not to put hamsters in your bedroom. The dust, ammonia and wood shavings can cause health problems or allergies. I suffer more sinus problems when I had some hamsters in my room.I just got a free Male Robovoski from forumer itssg. He was kind enuf to let me give a go at keeping this cute hammy. I was told it has about 1 year left, so hope to let it enjoy its time here. But, will learn more from u guys and gals here. Currently, i wanna ask, do i need to encourage it to drink water ? coz i fitted the bottle there, it did drank some water yesterday and friday, can hear it drinking from the bottle and the sound of the ball bearing. But, today it don't want. So, i took the bottle and put it near its mouth, then it keep on drinking. When i put it back to the holder, i ran there and drink. So, I was wondering, do i need to encourage it to drink ? THe rest of the stuffs, looks ok for it. By the way, there's some hammy smell in my room now. haha, will it cause any bacteria build it ? I mean from the odour. I do keep the cage clean every 3 days, today was the 1st cleaning. Other than that, all seems ok. Also, temps between 20-35 is it ok for it ? Anyone knows where I can get a small metal stainless steel food bowl like the size of those chili plastic plates ? Thanks for all the advices and tips in advance. For smell, you can use a bedding called Healthy Pet, it absorbs smell and pee really really well and you don't need to change every 3 days if you use this bedding. Only can find at Pet Safari, Ikano. Hamsters will know where to drink. They are desert animals, they will only drink when thirsty. Of course if you offer the bottle in front of it then it would drink. Stainless Steel bowls or plates are light, a hamster would topple it over and bury it than eat from it. Choose heavy base bowls made or clay or glass or ceramic. I personally like the ceramic bowls for hamsters sold at Pet Safari for they are safe, hygienic and heavy enough to withstand the weight of a hamster if it so happen to climb on it. |

QUOTE(jy14 @ Sep 25 2007, 01:49 AM) Hi guys and gals, Hahaha.... my words are funny meh? THanks for the tips. WIll take note of it. Been reading the LYN's guide, more useful than any other guide on the net. WIll help u guys to advertise abit. haha Sis Hun: haha, ur words there is funny. haha. Anyway, erm, I'll take a look at the Healthy Pet in Pet Safari. If its huge, anyone wanna share, can share lo, otherwise, I'll just get it on my own coz I dunno how much of it I'll need. Oh yah, about the bowl, will the hammy chew on to the ceramic bowls ? Not so healthy ? I thot of getting a stainless steel bowl, then sort of glue it or fix it at a place in the new home. Will plan to get 2, 1 for the food, another for the sand bath, any tips for the sandbath ? Just normal sand or any specific sand ? Oh, I hope my recent itch bites on my legs and hands are not caused by keeping it in my room. haha. I'll try to allocate it elsewhere in my home. Thanks for educating a noob here. Will learn more from u guys and gals here. THank you. Healthy Pet bedding is not that big a pack... you got the small Rm16.80 5L pack which can last you for a month or so..... then there is the bigger pack, which is 10L is only Rm25.20.... buying the bigger pack can save some cash. Nah, gluing on a stainless steel bowl is not that healthy. You can get a hook or something but then it would be too high for the hamster. Pet Safari has ceramic bowls from as cheap as Rm5.90..... chew the ceramic bowl? Aiyoh, no lah... they can't do that. Plastic can lah but ceramic is like glass, you also can't chew and break a cup or plate right? Sand bath needs to be a in bowl that is 2 times bigger than the hamster's body length.... no, normal sand cannot. You have to get specific sand that is for hamsters. Do not get dust bath, it is dangerous and only suitable for Chinchillas.... get sand bath which is fine, not too rough. |

Yah... the dogs that got caged up to die was at Pet Safari, but it wasn't Pet Safari's fault coz it was the business that rented the place to sell dogs. Pet Safari is just a place while the ones selling fish, dogs, cats and reptiles plus small animals are run by different companies that rented the place from Pet Safari. The company that did the caging thing is no more there, it is now a new business selling dogs now.
Best is just go there to buy products, don't buy livestock. |

Normally if you keep in a pair or more, 1 would be the fattest coz that one is the most dominant. Normally the dominant hamster would eat more and eat the best food 1st then only the others eat what is left.

QUOTE(lapsap @ Sep 27 2007, 04:14 PM) hmn.. newbie here..with couple of questions Sand? What sand? You cannot use construction sand or beach sand for it is full of bacteria and germs. Just use normal wood shavings do look carefully coz not all brands or wood are safe for hamsters.for the bedding can i put sand on the lower level and then with wood shavings on top? for the hay can i use the sun-dried corn leaves? and it is possible to just keep in the room? my room is quite dim will it be any sideeffects on the hamster? thanks in advance? Hay you can actually even use your own grass.... cut alot of long grass, then dry under the sun. Yes, you can also use sun-dried corn leaves but then only as a small part of bedding coz it is not absorbent enough. Dim is ok, hamsters prefer that. What species are you keeping or gonna keep? Also, do not put right under the air flow of the air cond, better put far away from your bed too coz the dust from the wood shavings can affect your health. |

QUOTE(lapsap @ Sep 27 2007, 09:41 PM) hmn.. the sand is just my curiosity..erm..but can i put like my front yard garden soil (after dry under the sun) on the bottom layer so to let the hamster dig? Syrians can only be kept singly... so even if you want another one later, you cannot put in the same cage.hmn...own grass?will try, but own grass absorbent enug? oh.. hmn.. but i keep in my room will the smell get strong until my housemate also can smell it? hmn.. i think syrian.. i ask a few that has keep hamster b4, ended i think best to have only 1 st, then after i under their lifestyle only get 2 ... haha.. room no air cond.. only have a 24hr running table fan,, will it be too hot? put far away? i think that will be problem...hmn.. no space..unless put on my study table.. Hay is not suppose to be absorbent, it is mainly to nest and to chew.... the corn leaves are a bit waxy, so it is not so suitable as bedding. No, garden soil is a no also coz they all got bacteria. Unless you can take all this soil or sand, and bake it at a very very high temperature in the oven for 1 hour to kill of germs, mites, bacteria.... you do know the soil has mites and spores rite? It will just make your hamster itchy and unclean. Wood shavings is still ok for them. No, it won't be too hot coz hamsters are partly desert animals. They can withstand some heat but cannot be too hot also. If you do not keep the bedding clean, it will smell alot. Putting in a room, you will get the ammonia traveling in the air as well as bacteria growth and also dust from the wood shavings, all these can lead you to get sinus problems or allergies. So you have to put the cage far from your sleeping area. |

I find Healthy Pet better loh.... but some people don't want to spend money on bedding.... so wood shavings is of course better than soil.
Yah, Syrian can toilet train.... actually, all hamsters can toilet train. My Campbells use toilet wan hahahah.. all the pee is inside, sometimes got poop. Good coz now I don't need to change bedding so often. Now I not only toilet train hamster, I also toilet train hedgehogs hhahha |

QUOTE(lapsap @ Sep 28 2007, 02:24 PM) okie..understood for 1,2, and 3... Large rocks for climbing are ok but why you want to put small rocks at the lowest level? It would be uncomfortable.hmn..how bout small rocks? if put as bedding (on the lowest level) will they dig also? ... previously i was thinkin of just put beside my bed..hmn...so it is better to put the cage near an open air area (window) so that the smell and dust wont be stuffing in the room? Yes, if you can put near a window it would be good but you also must make sure no direct sunlight or heat from the window, later become baked hamster hahaha |
