Personally I think 70-200mm f2.8 for portrait is brainless. Not only it's expensive, but also not practical. For motorsport or field sports probably yes, since we need fast shutterspeed for that.
*
I do agree with you on two points made:
1. 50mm prime is a better lens for portrait compares to 70-200mm F2.8
2. Shooting sports needs a fast lens, sharpness is less important than freezing the action, DOF does not apply at all.

Well said Albnok.

The point of bringing this up to clear up my doubts on people getting fast lens. A person like me who likes to shoot fauna (birds do not complain like human do btw), I like my image to be as sharp as possible.

When one purchase a 70-200mm F2.8, use it to shoot portrait is unlikely because there are better alternatives like super wide to wide and prime. So a lens like this will be used to shoot fauna or flora. So knowing a sharpest result can be obtained at F8 or F11, then what's the point of getting the F2.8 version?

I'm not saying that buying these lens is wrong, I'll just want to know the rational behind it. Smaller DOF and able to use it at dimmer condition don't quite justify, as the way I look at it.

I'm looking for something/answer that I do not know. So stop flaming me smile.gif

Add on: I've just missed the point on shooting foot ball game (or what ever game). Still, I think 200mm will not give enough reach unless one is sitting next to the goal gate. This can be a reason for fast lens though, any other reason?
*
the 70-200 f2.8 is one helluva sharp lens, there is nothing wrong to use it to shoot portrait but yes, it is quite wasteful.

thats why i mentioned buying those lens give u more options to shoot different kidn of photos and the quality of the optics (sharp and less optics distortion) are well paid off.

talking about birdie, 70-200 is not quite enough anyway..lol

and for football sports, most of the ppl will use 400mm to 600mm

dun worry, kelvin, no hard feeling

OK, anyone knows what's the going price for the Tammy 17-50mm f2.8? soulfly, got lobang or not smile.gif having an f2.8 lens is that bit more important to an A100 shooter like me who really cannot go any higher than ISO400 without worrying about noise level. Like they said, I would gladly sacrifice a bit of sharpness for the picture rather than add noise to it and destroy it. And some shots simply cannot have flash light, like this shot:

After leaving my Nikon D40 for some reasons then now switch to Alpha club. I still prefer my ex D40 handling.  tongue.gif.

That's why my plan would be a F1.4-2.0 prime lineup; a 50mm F1.4, maybe a Sigma 30mm F1.4, and a Sony Carl Zeiss 135mm F1.8. biggrin.gif

mhhee: Sure ah? I like having the ISO and Drive buttons separately... you have to check out the A200 vertical grip.

Eh since u wanna get 50mm 1.4, sell me ur 50mm 1.7. brows.gif About the battery grip, it's loooooooooooooooovely. I cant believe so few Alpha ppl using it. I mainly bought it because it looks so good. I din even know what it was for when I bought the camera, I jsut added the batt grip to make the camera look nicer. laugh.gif Later oni learned how to utilise teh batt grip n what it's for. howzabout u post up teh pic of the camera with batt grip again to poison more ppl. brows.gif

In the end it all boils down to what we shoot, and where we shoot.

I find that the performances I shoot are either dark that I need around F2.0... or bright that I can use F4.0.

Similiarly, I mostly shot at ISO400 on the A100, or ISO1600 on the A700. I don't use ISO800 much, like I don't use F2.8 much, for some weird reason.

I find that I prefer lighter lenses than the 70-200mm F2.8. 17-50mm F2.8 is good though. The Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 is better for me, I always wish my 70-210mm F4 can go wider (it is meant to be on full-frame).

Of course, your kind of composition will be different than mine... and you might like to flash... so pick your own lenses. biggrin.gif

Though, just nitpicking, I prefer the bokeh rendition on my 70-210mm F4 to the 50mm F1.4.

ianho: I've always had a 50mm F1.4 la LOL. tongue.gif

After all the comment it sounds like i just waste my money on my 70-200, lol

i uses mine 70-200 for potrait, nature and indoor events + wedding shooting it turned out the way i wanted, so i'm actually very very satisfied with it =)

But it's true that this lense for shooting bird lack abit, the focusing is fast, but the zoom aint enough.

It'll definitely come in handy when it comes to potrait/model shooting, assuming it's outdoor and there's quite a few photographer, it'll be easier to compose.

I'm planning to get 35mm 1.4 for product shooting, maybe abit of candid streets and indoor model shooting, , any comment ?

Hahaha... that shot was indeed taken with a 50mm f1.7 at ISO200, 1/200s, f2.8. So now you see why I would be interested in a tammy 1750 f2.8? smile.gif It would give me more angles to shoot at (just below the girl - whops, if I had taken that shot, I wouldn't have shown you anyway! tongue.gif ), and all at f2.8! Needless to say, my kitlens wasn't performing too good in these conditions. I just used my kitlens for the award presentations and all that *boring* stuff (photographic brain dead shots - that's how I classified them). I just love the atmosphere created by stage lightings.

For Minolta... I think the shop meant 2nd hand Minolta lens. Brand new Minolta is very rare to find considering the history.

Soony: The Sony 55-200mm F4-5.6 DT is nice. Very compact, like a slightly longer kit lens. Same thickness.
Owh.. then maybe i shall go for that.. since it comes with the kit lens in twin kit lens for A300.. realise its the different lens compared to the one offered in A200.. Thx alot =)

Anyway guys.. do you all purchase the bags for the camera once you purchase your very own dslr?? Gosh.. how much would that cost??im just a student =(

Depends. Generic bags which can fit camera body and one or two additional lens will cost about RM1xx. Some smaller bags which can only fit body with kitlens attached will cost less than RM100.
