Yeah, Japan is still my favourite besides Australia.
In the last 8 years, I did Europe 2x, Japan 2x, Aus 2x and some other ASIAN countries.
Still the best is Japan and i am having my 3rd visit next month. But the currency is bad now adays. I am doing not so popular tourist spots this time like wakayama and etc.

BTW, please share if you managed to get cheap promo tix for USJ.

KOP is a fancy ICOCA (it has the ICOCA logo on the card) for foreign tourists only with discount benefits for some places in Kansai.

I'm afraid I can't answer your second question cos I have not used my KOP outside of Kansai. You're right about IC cards being accepted in Japan nationwide so theoretically it can. Maybe someone else who has used an ICOCA outside of Kansai can confirm this for you. 
Actually your calculation should be the other way round:
Kansai One Pass = 3000 yen - 500 yen deposit = 2500 yen value in card
ICOCA = 2000 yen - 500 yen deposit = 1500 yen value in card

So price is actually the same, just that you get more value in the Kansai One Pass card to use.

Yes, you can get the Haruka discounted ticket with the Kansai One Pass. I bought this when I was in Osaka last year. 

Yeah, transportation not cheap there. 
Used my Kansai One Pass on a few train and bus rides and the 2500 yen value also habis already. Had to reload another 1000 yen to make sure I can still move around. 

Oh, if you're not getting off at Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, I suggest you shouldn't bother with the Haruka train. Just save your money for eating - use the Nankai Ltd Express and switch trains at Tengachaya station.

For sure scalpers know when to scalp. Their not stupid. I won't be surprised if MR_alien cannot find seats on website but is available on taobao. But to each their own, its not illegal anyways so no harm done.

As far as I know they have 2 types of ticket, Advance sales (1 month advance) and On-the-day ticket.

Cheaper is becoz of bulk buying discounts, usually under group or corporate buys. They still get profits after paying off ground agents/runners. Main reason why they scalp, otherwise nobody will do work for free. For those not so hot (like daily limited thing) they won't overcharge you, but for those time limited stuff, they kaw overcharge to max just becoz they know they can.

This is different than those travel website co-promos where the discounts are really by them in cooperation with the ticket sellers. Usually they limit how many tickets can be bought from the same credit card, so as to discourage scalping.

As said, I don't & won't support them but its not illegal & no harm done.

1. go to saga-arashiyama JR station...take the sagano train from saga to kameoka...thn umahori back to saga-arashiyama JR thn walk to the bamboo forest
or
2. forget the sagano train and just explore the bamboo forest and surrounding area
