Dude, if you use a car that won a grand prix last season, they should have done A LOT better. IMO, davidson is a let down this season. I was hoping for him to consistently score top 8 finishes, looking at the car and his potential 2 years ago

FIA deny being influenced by media outrage
QUOTE
The FIA have denied that they were pressurised into launching their much-derided investigation into McLaren's 'team strategy' at the Monaco GP by the hysterical post-race reaction of the British media.

As expected, the governing body have cleared McLaren of any wrongdoing during Sunday's procession, declaring in a statement that the team's request to Lewis Hamilton to 'cool it' was "entirely legitimate".

According to some bemused personnel in the paddock, the probe was launched purely as a consequence of the vehement criticism of McLaren by the British press. The Daily Mirror, for instance, claimed that, by denying Hamilton the opportunity to challenge team-mate Fernando Alonso, F1 had been 'robbed of honour and pride and honesty and fair play'. The Daily Telegraph, considered to be one of the least frenzied voices on Fleet Street, described the 'enforced denial of a car chase around the streets of Monte Carlo as sacrilege.'

The FIA, though, have insisted that their investigation was initiated shortly after the race, and long before the British media voiced its sanctimonious outrage.

"The investigation was initiated and started on Sunday evening and developed through Monday morning," Richard Woods, a spokesman for the FIA, told The Times.

Woods also maintained that not only was the FIA probe legitimiate, but had also enhanced the sport's reputation.

"We would never have initiated our investigation unless there was enough for us to look at in the first place," he argued. "This was the regulator going through the regulatory process as transparently as possible and reaching a conclusion."

While that view will not be held universally - Sir Jackie Stewart, for one, has criticised the FIA's investiagation on the basis that "it's unfortunate for Formula One that so much speculation was created, which, in some cases, produced negative publicity towards the sport" - the episode has highlighted the difficulty McLaren face in handling the intensifying interest in Hamilton's progress.

Team boss Ron Dennis has a prickly relationship with the British press and was embroiled in an angry exchange with Daily Express hack Bob McKenzie on Thursday after being accused of deliberately denying access to Hamilton. One suggestion is that the intensity of the media's attack on McLaren's tactics in Monaco was a direct consequence of the simmering feud between the two parties.

Added on May 31, 2007, 10:54 pmSutil linked with Toyota switch
QUOTE
Adrian Sutil has been touted as a possible replacement for the beleaguered Ralf Schumacher at Toyota.

Following a dismal weekend in Monaco, Ralf has reputedly been given just two races to save his F1 career. According to reports in the German press, the team have run out of patience with the 31-year-old and Sutil has been linked with a dramatic transfer from Spyker.

The unheralded Sutil has emerged as one of 2007's unlikely success stories. This weekend at Monaco, the German topped the timesheets after a wet practice session, an achievement which PF1 declared had promoted the rookie 'from being a pay-driver to someone with potential.' Others, too, have apparently noticed his fine form. "After Adrian's recent performances, one or two team managers have enquired about his situation, but up to now there have been no negotiations," agent Karl-Heinz Zimmermann confirmed.

Nonetheless, it remains unlikely that Sutil would replace Schumacher at Toyota midway through his debut season in F1. Indeed his candidature simply highlights the biggest obstacle Toyota could face in ousting Ralf: the acute shortage of feasible replacements currently available.

Bye Bye Schumacher??

Eddie Irvine has slammed Kimi Raikkonen's below-par performances for the Prancing Horse - but has praised Felipe Massa.

The former Ferrari ace believes that besides the Brazilian's mistake at Sepang, he has consistently outperformed his illustrious team-mate.

The Ulsterman told Setanta Sports: "I think Felipe's done a great job.

"He looked stupid in Malaysia [when he was passed by Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton at the beginning of the race after starting on pole], but you have to say that he was all over Hamilton.

"He looked like he could have got him. Raikkonen then pulled up behind him when Massa went off and he couldn't even get close."

"Felipe's been bloody quick. In Malaysia he probably should have taken it a bit easier and got more points but since then he's done a fantastic job.

"Raikkonen just hasn't been on the pace the whole season really. Massa has been on top of him in winter testing and the first four races.

The former Jordan driver again raised the issue of the Finn's notorious playboy lifestyle.

Irvine hinted that the 27-year-old's inconsistent form could perhaps be attributed to his drinking.

"I don't know what that's all about - he's going to have to get his act together or stop drinking because if he's not winning he can't be drinking."

live vs good commentators, why not watch both?
but RTM's live coverage IS 3 laps faster than Star Sports, thus when both are airing live race, better watch TV2, wait for an incident, and switch to star sports to watch it again

Mika questions Kimi`s move to Ferrari
QUOTE
Mika Hakkinen claims that his countryman Kimi Raikkonen failed to heed his warning that leaving McLaren would be difficult.

The double World Champion had cautioned Raikkonen to remain with the Woking-based team rather than switch to Ferrari.

Hakkinen told the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti: "I warned him that changing teams might not go well for him

"Unfortunately for Kimi, my forecasts are being fulfilled."

The stoic 38-year-old remained loyal to McLaren through a difficult spell with the team in the 1990's and was rewarded with the 1998 and 1999 World Championship titles.

"Winning the world championship is like a spider-web, which needs many threads, and time," he explained.

"Of course it is true that McLaren's recent past had some problems, but it is a team that has always had the capacity to recover.

The former McLaren star intimated that Raikkonen would have been more successful had he not joined the Prancing Horse.

He said: "It is possible that Kimi has not measured the risks (of joining Ferrari) too well because it looks like being a difficult year for him.

"Also the McLaren car has evolved a lot in the past races, and winning titles can depend a lot on minor factors.

"In this game there are many excellent drivers, so Kimi cannot rely exclusively on his talent," Hakkinen said.

I do believe the downfall of Kimi is that he has not driven many races before F1 that needs him to take care of his machine more. He races in Formula Renault, which is more of sprint to the finish race unlike F1 where you have to drive for 2 hours before finishing. Thus this might explain why he's fast, but unreliable.

Alonso sings Lewis` praises
QUOTE
Fernando Alonso has praised the start to the season made by team-mate Lewis Hamilton amid the furore over the McLaren team allgedly using team orders during the Monaco GP.

The FIA, the sport's governing body, investigated the race after Alonso and Hamilton finished first and second - with claims being made that the young British driver was ordered to back off so he did not put his stablemate under pressure.

But the Spaniard, whose team escaped punishment by the FIA, has welcomed the impact made by Hamilton.

"We need to wait and see how the Championship develops but, for sure, it's been a very good start for the team and for Lewis as well," said Alonso.

The reigning Champion is also pleased to see Hamilton help him pick up points in the manufacturers' Championship as well as pushing him in the Drivers' title race.

"Thanks to everybody's points, we are doing great in both championships. Does his success motivate me? No, because I'm always motivated," Alonso added in an interview published in the latest edition of Nuts magazine.

yes, that's why I said, I believe. It does not matter whether you believe it or not. It's just my opinion based on what I saw. the more the gap between him and Massa grow, the more he pushes, and the more he makes mistake, or blow his engine.

Added on June 7, 2007, 5:00 pmHeikki: `I don`t like Piquet Jr`
QUOTE
Heikki Kovalainen may have started a war-of-words with Nelson Piquet Jr after publicly revealing his dislike for the Renault tester.
The duo currently work together at Renault as Piquet Jr replaced Kovalainen as the team's official test driver after the Finn was promoted to race driver.
And they may even race together next season if rumours that Piquet will replace Giancarlo Fisichella as a Renault race driver next season are to be believed.
However, that doesn't mean they have to like each other, which is probably a good thing because Kovalainen "really" doesn't like the Brazilian.
Asked by ITV to chose between former F1 drivers Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet, Kovalainen's said: "To be honest I don't really know them so well - it was too early for me when they were racing."
However, he then added: "I don't really like Piquet Junior so much so maybe Mansell."

lol, I really love how the media manipulate how the drivers talk

Giancarlo Fisichella and Alex Wurz have hit back at former Champion Jacques Villeneuve for his verbal attack on Lewis Hamilton.

The 1997 Drivers' Champion, who retired last season, recently slammed the McLaren rookie for being too aggressive at the start of races with "chopping moves" and suggested the young Briton deserved to be penalised.

The 36-year-old Canadian, who in his first season in 1996 amassed a rookie record 78 points, won four races and enjoyed 11 podium finishes, also labelled Hamilton's red-hot start to his F1 career as lucky.

Hamilton, 22, has been setting records of his own, with five podium finishes from the first five races of the season, and his fellow drivers on Thursday rallied to his cause in Montreal ahead of Sunday's Canadian GP.

"I think Jacques might find it more and more difficult in the future to find comments he can give," Williams driver Wurz said.

"I see nothing wrong with the moves he (Hamilton) is making. It's hard to defend your line."

Fisichella did not comment on Hamilton's actions but he rounded on Villeneuve, adding: "Jacques says quite a lot of things in the media right now. He talks too much."

Hamilton's fellow Brit Jenson Button steered clear of the controversy, however, when he said: "I've been so far back, at the back of the grid, that I haven't seen any of the moves that have been going on. I wish I had but I haven't."

Alonso admits 'we won't dominate here'.
QUOTE
Fernando Alonso is expecting a closer battle from opposition outside the McLaren team in the Canadian Grand Prix, despite topping both free practice sessions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The double world champion headed McLaren team-mate - and biggest Monaco 'rival' - Lewis Hamilton in the opening 90-minute outing, before improving after lunch to head Ferrari's Felipe Massa by half a second. However, despite the sizeable advantage, Alonso insisted that the opening day conditions made accurate predictions of performance hard to gauge.
"It was a good start to our weekend at a challenging circuit, but I don't think we will dominate like we did at the last race in Monaco," the Spaniard claimed, "In the first session, we limited our running slightly as the track was very dirty and only used one set of tyres, but still emerged fastest. The second session was spent on tyre evaluation and also looking at the brakes. We have made some good progress so so far so good, but the track conditions here means that it's very hard to estimate where our competition is."

Rookie team-mate Hamilton was making his first appearance at the Montreal circuit, but acclimatised quickly and backed Alonso up in both sessions.

"Today was the first time I had the opportunity to drive at the Montreal circuit and I really enjoyed myself," the Briton revealed, "We had done a lot of work back in the UK with our simulation programme and I have watched a few of the past races here, but you can't beat the real thing. We worked on set-up, tyre evaluation and also looking at the brakes as this circuit is notoriously hard on the brakes, but there were no problems and it looks like we are in good shape.”
