it is about what u r primarily looking for in a box.
most boxes, incl best known ones are designed for online streaming - netflix, amazon, hbo, etc.
for local playback with all the essential capabilities - auto frame rate switching, full bluray menu, lossless audio, HDR/HLG/DV... some may not do well.
besides the coming little known himedia, there are 3 more higher end devices, now available or coming soon u can check up:

the info about these boxes are a bit scanty now since very new or not launched yet.
at this time mostly advertisement and promotion hype.
i will wait a couple months, read actual user reviews; moreover, it usually takes some weeks for the firmware to get improved.

i have been looking for a new box for >1 year now but there has been nothing great and new for last 2 years.
my primary purpose is local playback but eqpt limited to 4k hdr10/dtshdma/ddtruehd.
secondary purpose is a variety of online streaming apps incl astro go.
so, not so keen on 8k, atmos; no interest in netflix dv/atmos and gaming at all.
my Q10pro serves my purposes very well but i am looking a newer second box, future proof a bit.

the box is 4 years old, android7.0.
there has been no new and better box since... only lower grades and an ATV dongle.
Q100 was speculated but i think it has been aborted given it is not a better box to compete with newer boxes now and near future.
there is news of a new and better box but not much known.

about hdd compartment, yes... it is very useful if u have sata hdd.
there are very few boxes with this feature... and they typically cost 2x, 3x the price.

in some ways, i share yr problem... looking for new box, have 1 sata hdd to slot in.
i have resisted so far as i do not want 2 Q10pro... although i am totally satisfied with the one i have for >3 years.

if of any use, i will say if u r mainly doing local playback, q10pro is still good and will stay good for some years.
if u r looking for more memory/storage, it is just about minimum.
if u r looking for latest android version, latest hdmi, hlg, hdr10+, dolby vision... u probably want to wait 3-6 months.
see what the next new model will be like... there is little info at this time.

if u set to 2160p, u get upscaling for anything originally below that.
if u set to 1080p, that's the highest it will be, no upscaling for original 1080p.
also, u can press menu button on remote and explore the various fine tuning options incl imprex engine on/off.
the rest will be up to the TV.

2160p hdr downgraded to 1080p hdr.

That is normal.
I do not know of any player that can do auto resolution switching... 2160p, 1080p, 720p, 576p... AND auto framerate switching.
For q10pro, there was a customized way to do that.
I tried it, worked for a while only.
There may be an update, never checked again.

try reseting with the pinhole method.
u will lose all apps, reinstall all.

did this problem exist for some time, with other firmware versions?
if yes, likely a hardware issue, the likely culprit being the power adaptor.
it is not difficult of find... shopee wud hv it... all himedia models use the same one.

i will suggest u try what i said just 2 posts ago:

If u get overheating, something is wrong.
Open up the box to check the int hdd, connections, heat conductor.

this kodi+wrapper is not magical, not the best way to test if ddtruehd/atmos will work.
try it with native player first.
int'l model q5pro or q10pro will do dd,dd+,ddtruehd, atmos, dts, dtshdma, dtsx.
then again, sound bars are tricky... u gotta be sure of the connections and settings.

U will also find google playstore, youtube and chrome missing... they are not found in china market use.

i do not know about repair.... but u can always take it to a shop that sells such boxes, someone might know.

the original preinstalled youtube does not get updated, ignore it.

just install a new version, use like any other app.

1. No surprise... the free stuff, free apps inevitably die or eed updates, need new apps.
2. Firmware too old, out of date, buggy.. need to update firmware.
3. The preinstalled youtube is not update... just ignore it. Install new version.

Your case, best to take it to a shop which sell himedia. May need to pay a bit... a bit of work required.
