avfan, you seem like a pro with these things, would appreciate some advise sensei  notworthy.gif

i just recently purchased a Sharp LC50UA6800X

based on your previous comments, you mentioned that the inbuilt android player in the tv is not recommended in terms of performance and codec support? and you suggested using a separate media player for better results.

i have a HIMEDIA H8 but based on others input, it doesn't seems it's suited for 4k content
i normally play mkv, mp4, SSA subs, aac, flac, ac3, dts, h264, h265. also planning to try out 4k (i need something netflix capable. last i heard netflix is very picky and may refuse to offer 4k streams for certain devices, so i'm not sure what device qualifies but it does narrow down my choices).
is this newer himedia S1 dongle recommended? or something else? Or is nvidia shield better (i'm leaning more toward this, unless there is a reason why himedia might be better)?  hmm.gif

doing more research, although nvidia shield uses androidtv, not the regular android like himedia. this does not seem to be a problem because can sideload and install own ....custom apps and launcher. so i guess the question is, any reason for me to consider a himedia over nvidia shield 2017?  hmm.gif
would appreciate any advise  sweat.gif

if u have ua6800x, i can surely comment on yr concerns.

like i said many times, tv makers make tv displays and they should. they are not media player or android player makers.
but as the market looks for these features, they incl them but do not usually do that great a job.
so, yes, the tv player for playback is NOT good - esp for those who playback higher grades of video, audio, w/subs, etc.
but it's ok for lower grade, smaller files.
if your requirements are "mkv, mp4, SSA subs, aac, flac, ac3, dts, h264, h265", the tv player can deal with most of these relatively simple types.
but dts will be a problem - u get no audio at all; navigation and subs can be a bit of a pain for you.

many devices or boxes can handle 4k but for netflix, it is best to use the netflix available in the tv.
i have used it for 4k and UHD, it works fine on ua6800x; u won't get improvement if u use another device.
becos the ua6800x like other netflix 4k approved tv's has everything approved and tested for netflix 4k.

H8 is >3 years old... it can do 4k and the types u mentioned... but can't do the rest... HDR, 10 bit, dtsx, atmos...
so, if u hv the budget, do go for a new box to get more for your new TV and home theater if u hv one.
as for current Q10pro, it has great video playback and audio handling capabilities.
Q10pro is probably among the top choices if u do local playback a lot since it handles almost all formats and types with ease.
i can also tell u for apps that u can install in both q10pro and ua6800x, the video output quality from q10pro is ALWAYS superior.

himedia S1 new device... while i see good potential in it, it is a dongle companion to the tv, more for online streaming rather than playback.
i wouldn't recommend it to you as yet since it is so new and there is very little info about it.

i have never used a shield, so i can't comment on that part - this u gotta read/ask in shield thread.
it is a highly talked about device and cost the most, but u should check if it is really the "best" box for what you r going to use it for.
google and read too... pay attention to comments from those who have actually used the devices concerned and can compare with rich user experience.

ah ty for your feedback  notworthy.gif

guess that also includes replacing Yamaha AV/receiver as well? I use a bronze m 5.1 audio speaker setup. Definitely does not have dolby atmos... also probably doesn't do 4k (but is this only related to bluray player? not affect playback direct on tv for 4K for e.g. netflix and youtube?)

sorry newb. most of these things i had a technician setup for me way backs  sweat.gif  i only have basic knowledge on these matters.
what i gathered so far, if i simply just watching youtube, netflix ...and... other streaming *cough  then the inbuilt smart tv application e.g. android tv etc, should suffice.

But only if wanting to playback local media files e.g. NAS streaming or bluray player, then something like a media box is recommended.

did i get that right?  smile.gif
*
the tv is 4khdr... so u can get netlfix, youtube 4k using these apps of the tv.

using a box, if going thru AVR, the AVR has be 4k in order to pass thru to TV, whether netflix, youtube or local files playback.

so, if u r limited by the AVR, either u connect box direct to TV for 4k material and give up HD audio or connect box to AVR and give up 4k video.

a common misleading perception is all android devices are the same, whether android TV, cheap box or costly box.

that is correct for the most basic user who dun really care much about video and audio quality, i.e. very happy with quality found in phone or tablet.

for the enthusiast, u will go for good stuff in every component of the chain:

source->player->avr->tv.

the weakest link determines the final output in video quality for yr eyes and audio quality for yr ears.

guys how to play bdmv with this player? couldn't get it to work

finally connected to my NAS thru SMB, but according to nicety , don't use samba, I'm having smaller display output..... doh.gif

but all the files I see, I just can't get it to output bluray menus, all folders n file
*
i think u r not using the native player...?

if u r using native player with either native file manager or media center, a click on a bdmv folder will lead u immediately to the bd menu - u do not get see the folders or files inside.

if u do, that tells me u r not using native player but some other player... mx, kodi, other nas player..?

or... u r missing the bluray apk and/or it hasn't been activated.

(this is unlikely if u had bought from nicety.)

suggest u copy a couple of videos incl a bdmv on a portable HDD, plug it into the usb and play direct with native player.

then u can see the diff, what u r missing, what may be wrongly set up...

Ok...so, after a couple of months using Zidoo X9S, looks like the general consensus in the household is Himedia is overall easier to use...
Personally I'd prefer zidoo for the picture quality, and Home Theater 2.0, but I've to agree interface wise, Himedia better...
So, will be on the lookout for a new Himedia on sale soon...hopefully 12.12 ada offer biggrin.gif
*
no new model in sight... sad.gif

i am also in buying mode to replace an old box.

but i will only buy one that does bd menu and do all the audio types.

if there is "q16pro"... like q10pro but w/o hdd compartment, android7 or 8, all else the same, i am quite happy to get one.

zidoo... i can understand yr comment about about video quality having experienced acryan's realtek chipsets - they are good.

just the price is like 2-3x himedia for similar features. biggrin.gif

1st and foremost, shoutout for nicety , help me solve my streaming issue from NAS
finally understood y I make the purchase of q10  wub.gif  wub.gif
may get another soon once I sort out my ethernet issues

@avfan

got it to work with the native file manager, only problem I'm facing now is certain files(bdmv), especially those with 4k and Atmos/dts X will lag and hang at certain time point
normal 1080p HD audio file shouldn't be a problem
and the apps will stop responding

to pair this with a Synology NAS seems perfect, helps me get the subs I need automatically as well
*
i have experienced the bolded part when using just SMB wifi.
it happens with bit rates >60Mbps; below that, it is smooth.
my conclusion is my LAN equipment has something that isn't good enough but can't tell what... router, pc, adaptor..?
internal hdd or hdd direct to usb, never had any problem.

in yr case with synology nas, i wouldn't know much.
try checking the threads below, u may find some useful comments.

new himedia q10pro international version user,

i have problem to share my folder from pc to q10pro, i can detect my PC in media center LAN, but when i click the my pc, it show no folder inside. so i try to use ES file explorer Pro, it can see the folder that i share from my pc and i can stream movie with mx player or vlc player. then I try to use free version ES file explorer, i notice when setup share folder as ES file explorer Pro, it will force you to download "ads app" because my PC is using SMB 2.0 instead of old SMB 1.0. so now i suspect is it q10pro is using SMB 1.0 to communicate with PC in "media center LAN", because of ransomware issue, SMB 1.0 is not recommend to use that why i disable it.

i still prefer the Himedia media Center LAN, anyone know how to solve this issue ?  notworthy.gif
*
obviously, it is better to use the media center so as to benefit from the capabilities of the native player for video and audio.

and no nonsense like u get with free players e.g. es file explorer.

i think u haven't set up the pc permissions for access correctly... windows security/firewalls likely blocking access.

this part varies from pc to pc, and windows version... so, u gotta google and read it up how to enable access.

if the access permissions on pc, ip and account user id/pw in q10pro are correctly set, there shud b no problem... all folders and files of the user will show.

note connection and access can take a few seconds to come thru.

*
straightforward...

media center, LAN, add share. (do not use autosearch).

key in the requirement info in the window.

the pc must be on for it to detect.

can do a shortcut for easy access in future.

u can do shortcuts for pc hardisk, or portable drives in usb... it will assign the drives accordingly.

Example I click on media center LAN

Server IP: 192.168.2.134
Directory : what should I put?
Account : windows user name
Password : your password
What should I put in the "directory column"?

Just put Shared folder name? Or need to put /share folder name
*
no need /

for hard drive which is usually C, u can't use C as windows will not allow all of C to be accessed.

"users" will do. or "public" for the public folders.

for drives attached to usb, just D or E or F as the appear on your PC directory.

do confirm u get it... if not, i will check again.... been a while i did all these.

nicety told me to put just video, so far still workable

3d is out of fashion... tongue.gif

so, all is good with yr nas now using native player?

as for those very high bit rates, i like to know when u overcome that problem in time.

no plans to do nas but just for knowledge, TQ.

Ohh.. Thanks.. Just upgrade from 5 to 7 normally.

I tot got special procedures. Thanks again..
*
android 5, android 7 both hv several firmwares, better speak in terms of firmware version.

If u r on version 1.x, install 2.0.4 first,
Use pin reset method to completely move to and7.

Then, u install latest 2.0.9 or 2.1.0.

All firmwares available at futeko or himedia support page.
Himedia page, u find only 2.0.4 and 2.0.9 which are what u need.
2.1.0 is not there yet but has no major change.

If no response here, suggest u ask at futeko forum. Some big NAS users there.

if u dun already know... q10pro, q5pro... astrogo, unifi playtv apps.

.. for firmware 2.0.8 and later.

.. astrogo v8.2.6... this app is fully compatible with the box.. u install the official version from playstore, it will auto update if new version available.

.. unifi playtv.. this is compatible with box although u will not find the right version in playstore.
find it in apkpure v 7.9.2:
https://apkpure.com/playtv-unifi-tablet/com.huawei.pad.tm
install this version, it will overwrite any previous version installed... but id/pw will be preserved, no need to key in again.

as reliable free HD livetv apps come under pressure, these 2 legit apps are becoming more valuable.

use them!

updates, gotten NFS to work (thanks to avfan lea at futeko)
but still got hanging, but not as serious as SMB
tested a file at 45mb bitrate, stuck at 2 minutes, then subsequently ok for the remaining minutes
tested another file at 66mb. DTS demo bdmv, was stuck for a little while too
the rest normal 20+mb bitrate files, seems to work perfectly normal

is there anyway to get the q10 to display menus like the actual bluray??
like watching concert , it would show track names instead of minutes
*
imo, the stuttering with high bit rate videos is likely due to some bottleneck in the networking hardware - u gotta check that.
becos if u play a bdmv direct via usb, it is 100% fine.

full bdmv menu is available.
but only if u use the native player.
and u must hv the "bluray apk" installed and active - do check that.
if all is in good order, when u click on a bdmv folder whether at native file manager or media center, u will asked to select bd lite or bd full menu.
selecting bd lite will play the main video rightaway.
selecting bd full will take u to the full bd menu.

no idea how to check tat hardware issue hahah

iinm, im currently using the native player, it shows the bluray icon in front of the file, instead of a normal folder icon when it reads its a bdmv or perhaps ISO
which I think its a very nice feature

will tryout the bluray apk then

really tempted to get another unit of this hahahhahaahha
*
Bdmv or iso bd full menu is among the best features u get with this box.

With the audio capabilities, it is a critical feature for ardent users of bdmv and hd audio, 1080p or 2160p.
