It has nothing to do with cooling
Read through this topic and you will see that 2 out 3 users in here with a dead AC86U does use fans on their routers but their routers still end up dead

Again, it has nothing to do with cooling, it's a manufacturing fault. Read what I said earlier, there is no way to get 100% quality on every unit

adequate cooling is needed for this high end router for longevity.

1 of my friend bought AC86u from lazada oversea seller with 3years warranty ...

after use a month the router failed to connect to unifi account ...he chat with seller ..the seller ask to send back the unit and replace with new unit ..he did sent back and received new unit after few weeks ....

few Months later the unit gave problem again ...final the seller ask to return the unit and refund the money .

..the ASUS AC86u failure rate is high ....after get know from here few units having problem ...

hmm.gif seems like AC86u is prone to failure. Guess i'll skip the AC86u.

my initial was to get ac86u on upcoming sales. But i guess either ax88 or ac5300 brows.gif

I know that. My original point was that these failures are caused by manufacturing luck, some units even with adequate cooling still failed
It's manufacturing fault, some chips may have some defect which may cause these failures

I see more complaints with failure on China RT-AC86U.

If you want to get RT-AC68U from Taobao, might as well get RT-AC66U locally.

RT-AC66U is on par with RT-AC68U and it will perform better than RT-AC68U from Taobao. laugh.gif

I notice much lower failure rate but there's no way to measure this as I there are more people buying RT-AC86U from Taobao.

Many people still not aware that routers from CHINA have much lower transmit power resulting in smaller WiFi coverage.

Changing the region in professional settings wouldn't change transmit power, that only change the available channels.

China maximum EIRP is only up to 200mW while SKMM permits up to 1W for 5Ghz. wink.gif

Wah didn't know about the EIRP limitation in China. Btw, I'm currently using local 86U unit. Just into 6 months of usage but quite worried when seeing feedback of failure rates here. Just curious if local units have the same issues.

I do notice significantly lower reports of RT-AC86U bought locally having issues.

But ASUS provide 3 years 1-to-1 warranty so just whack them if anything happen. laugh.gif

WiFi is non-ionizing radiation. wink.gif

But the consolation prize is worst signal coverage.

so after 5 months, my AC86U just died on me.

Can't even turn on the router. No LED light up at all. Power supply unit is working fine as USB fan attached to the router can still run. Tried connecting via LAN but no response. Tried resetting using Reset button & other methods still wont work.

No choice but to RMA back to China.

anyway, have been using fans (blowing in) since day 1 with temperature never exceeding 60Celcius.

So Asus official taobao sent a replacement unit back to me. Now just waiting for it to arrive. Will sell it off since I already have a replacement router.

Some timeline for benefit of others.

11/11 bought router during sale. Flashed merlin, installed cooling fans since 1st day. Router positioned on high cabinet with very minimal dust area. (unlike a poster here who thinks everyone puts their router in a sawmill factory icon_rolleyes.gif)

13/4 router just died during daytime. No lightning whatsoever, it was a sunny day. No LAN connected except unifi modem.

contacted taobao agent in LYN who bought the router for me to contact Asus China.

23/4 sent router back to China using Poslaju Air Parcel (RM62 + RM15 insurance). Declared parcel as modem. Took 17 days to arrive, quite late since this is the cheapest postage.

10/5 router arrived at Asus China facility.

13/5 Asus China sent new replacement unit to taobao agent warehouse without further question. Problem statement already explained during first communication. Then have to fork out RM44 postage from warehouse to Malaysia.

So total spent for this RMA was RM121.

Still cheaper than buying local unit. tongue.gif

Mine died for no reason too (have fans installed too). Wireless strength weaken suddenly. Need to put beside router then have connection. confused.gif
