Most importantly, they've solved your issue in a timely manner.
Since Astro introduces their HD box (branded as Astro B.yond back in Dec 2009), they use a newer smart card encryption technology/method that has smart card pairing.
Source:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VideoGuardWith that, this makes it only that particular Astro smart card number can be authorised to be read by that particular STB set.
If the smart card finds that the STB is not the right STB to be authorised with, the card will not allowed to be read by that STB, causing authentication to fail.
I heard before stories like, those legacy Astro box users would remove the card from their legacy Astro box, then bring back to their hometown and insert the card into their legacy Astro box, so that they will be able to watch channels that the hometown's did not subscribed to. Example now it's festive season and all your relatives gathers at hometown, while your Astro subscription has Sports pack, but your hometown's one doesn't have Sports pack, so you bring back your Astro smart card and insert to their legacy Astro box, so that your family and relatives will have access to channels that they did not subscribed to, like Sports pack.
But today, if you want to do that, you'll have to bring along the whole Astro box with the power adapter, at least. And also the correct Astro remote control and HDMI cable if your hometown doesn't have one. However, in a more realistic approach, people nowadays would spend more time online rather than watching Astro...
Theoretically, Astro can't literally check where is this particular Astro box is being received, but they have the information of whether you're watching Astro or not (of course). As for location, the address stated in your Astro account's personal information is the one then. They won't know if you bring it elsewhere than the address provided by you.
But however, if you enable WiFi connection on your PVR box and Ultra box, then there is a possibility that Astro are able to check, such as your IP address and estimated location (WiFi location tracking) but it won't be as accurate as GPS. But I'm not sure if Astro practices this or not, cuz in my opinion, even if they have the information, what you expect them to do anyway?
When activated, they just need to register the box MAC address and the smart card number. This will prevent the card being used on other box. This was not how the legacy box worked. That is why you can bring the card anywhere and whichever box you plugged the card in will be able to receive all the channel that particular card was subscribed to.
Yes, satellite is one way communication for Astro box. It will only receive. Thus, no way Astro can trace your location through satellite, but it is possible if you are connected to Internet. Your IP address will let them trace to exact house address with help from Internet service provider, but I doubt Astro will do that since you still pay the service. Why bother as long the money is in
Even when they offered additional box and same available channel at 50% less additional fee, they know that some customers will put the other box at kampung or somewhere else and share the monthly fee, they are not into catching those practice. More subscriptions, business expands and share holders are happy
Their main problem is now people buying the Android box with ability to view all the channels including AOD. Last time there was like RM30 per month, but now they sell the box like RM300 and you can watch all channel and no monthly fee
