Astro falls to all-time low of 40 sen as uncertainty clouds dividend outlook
https://www.facebook.com/theedgemalaysia/po...3fJDp8fRTMCWgul
QUOTE
KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 4): Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd’s share price continued heading south on Wednesday. It hit an all-time low of 40 sen a week after the release of its quarterly earnings which came below consensus estimates.

The stock has plunged 61.17% from last year’s peak of RM1.03 in end-March. In other words, a cumulative RM3.29 billion has evaporated from the pay-TV group's market capitalisation over the past 18 months.

Was thinking need to return back if cease or cut astro subscription 😁
*

If you're using HD box or PVR box, and you terminate Astro, they don't want it back anymore. You can keep it or dispose it by put into e-waste bin.
But if it's Ulti or Ultra Box, then yes, they'll want it back.

CS said there are no issue either I choose Plug & Play mode or Satellite mode.

Thanks for the update.
All right, do let us know what did the technician do, and see how it goes..

Some people are happy that Go Shop is finally closed down, and one of the reason is that parents can stop telling its children to help them buy stuff from Go Shop, or the children is happy to see that their parents no longer keep spending a lot of money from shopping spree on Go Shop.

It seems that majority of the people out there are happy that Go Shop channels are ceasing next week 11 Oct. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(pmaxv @ Oct 5 2023, 05:56 PM)
Just took the free offer to convert my old box to plug & play box. After I activated the new SIM, got an e-mail saying TVB Jade channel 310 will be removed from my subscription. That was totally unexpected from Astro when their CS said nothing will change!

So I called first CS, gave me random answer telling me Astro will discontinue channel 310 not just on me but on all Astro customers. Already felt suspicious since I only got that e-mail after I activated the new SIM.

Then I called second CS. She told me no such thing. First CS bs me. How low can Astro be? Turned out some channels will be stopped cause of broadcasting rights issue with ISP. So beware of converting your unit to plug & play as some channels can be missing due to broadcast rights. If they really do remove channel 310 from Astro, I think I will just terminate membership. No wonder their viewership goes downhill. They can't even support existing customers.
*

Can you share here a screenshot of that email, saying that "TVB Jade channel 310 will be removed from your subscription"

Btw, are you able to watch channel 310 on your Astro box now?
And, have you ever activate TVBAnywhere+ app by logging in to your Astro ID before?

Because Astro want to give some job for installers to do. 😆
And basically the installer is telling you the things that I've already told you.

So, what will you do next? Would you call their customer service again, or you would send email to them as I mentioned before this?

How many Astro channels currently have after axing so many channels recently?
*

After Go Shop channels and Awesome TV ceases, Astro will still have around 120+ TV channels via satellite, excluding temporary pop-up channels, Astro First movie rental channels, and SD/HD simulcast channels.

If you wonder, how come the number of channels appear on their Subscription Rate Card is 140+ channels...? That is because, they've included 26 radio channels (CH852-877).
It is obvious that they do it on purpose to make the number of channels look like a lot sweat.gif
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...#entry108101700

Anyway, number of channels isn't the most important thing, but content is.

Ulti Box and Ultra Box both linux?

What the OS name and version?
*

Astro has been using proprietary OS for its set-top-boxes, hence whatever apps they want to include in the box, is entirely up to them, provided the box can properly supports it.
So sideloading apps like what you can do on those Android TV boxes, shouldn't come into picture.
QUOTE(Feliex @ Oct 6 2023, 06:07 PM)
Astro didn’t disclose any of this details
Only this stupid company own RND the tvbox, even HK & Taiwan is using Android kernel … is good to see ASTRO SHARE PRICE DROP! I wanna see still how much RND can SPEND!

Even AV1 also didn’t utilised! Where you can save your server & consumer bandwidth which is win-win situation! Come on la pirate tv box also using AV1 decode nowadays!

THIS IS WHY ASTRO CLOSE SHOP IS HAPPENING SOON!
*
QUOTE(linkinstreet @ Oct 6 2023, 07:21 PM)
Your rage aside, there is yet an official service provider that has used AV1 yet.

1. It's still new.
2. Yes, you now have devices that able to decode AV1, but you do realise for you to decode AV1, the medium needs to be encoded into AV1 first?
3. Encoding AV1 on the fly takes a lot of processing power compared to x264 and even HEVC, both wich already have cheap and decent conaumer grade encoders. This is why right now, most people are only using AV1 for storage purposes, or if their streaming, only for on demand and not live.
4. For backward compatibility wise, a lot of provider are still using x264 because it is supported by just about everything, from your simple web browser, to most smart devices. So instead of doing multiple encodes of AV1 and x264 to make sure that it's playable on every device the customer has, it's easier to just encode to x264. This means even the cheapskate of customer that has a very basic phone can install, use and stream from AstroGo. And more importantly, YOU ARE SAVING SPACE BY NOT ENCODING TWICE.

Yeah, there are new technology. But just because they are, does not mean it will be immediately picked up and be used. Even HEVC took nearly a decade before it's widely used. And that does not include those "future" codecs that's are widely touted to be the future, but ended up not even been used. Remember VP9? It was said to be the future since it's royalty free, but nobody ended up using it.
*

Btw, YouTube did generalise the use of VP9 video codec in the past though... But of course in recent years, they've mainly uses AV1 now.

If Astro would to use AV1, I can imagine they will need to upgrade a lot of their hardware encoding related stuff, plus I don't think their current Ulti/Ultra Box supports AV1 anyway.
And looking for money is something that Astro is more eager to look at, compared to the use of latest video codec.

Well the email reads:

Your change order has been successfully submitted and is being processed.

Order Changes

Packs & Services Removed
OD Free
TVB Jade

QUOTE(doubleM2 @ Oct 7 2023, 04:03 AM)
Seems like the naming scheme from those 2 services was from 2015-16 when On Demand was called "OD", hence the name "OD Free".

I also assume TVB Jade stands for "TVB Jade Pack", now already been discontinued since April 2020. But rest assured that TVB Jade Ch 310 is still on-air, so no cessation occurs. It feels odd of the thought that only the TVB Jade channel would be removed from your subscription.
*

Yeah... Now I see it, it seems like it's just removing some "legacy pack naming" from your subscription, which I don't think it is something that you should be worry about, as long you can still watch TVB Jade CH310.

In simple words, just ignore that.

Yes, you totally right. Totally same.

I already call Astro CS and they need to submit report to other department A (I named it A because not remember it name) to change my box to Satellite mode. If that got approval, they will send to department B to update their system. This process can take a few days. CS also told that their also got many request to change from Plug & Play mode to Satellite mode because of reason that state by @JOSHHD before.

Why Astro still using this business model? I just want to change from Plug & Play to Satellite but its very very complicated.
It very inconveniences the customer.

*

Astro can say that the people who are unhappy with Plug & Play service are a minority among the rest who've already on Plug & Play today.
In fact, they've made Plug & Play as the default installation method, including new installations and existing customer's box upgrade installations.
Meaning, if you don't specifically mention to them you want the satellite dish installation, then they'll select Plug & Play for the installation method for you.
So what's your guess on why Astro wants to push so much on their Plug & Play service?

This one from astro first??

Looks like sports channels only 🤔

Because last time I always see this kind of "hidden code" in the screen... during the 48h subscription period
*

I have a feeling that considering Astro's financial performance now, they might be more desperate than ever to revive the feature where a "unique short code" to appear at not just sports channels, but also on high viewership channels.
As what I know, that unique short code contains information of your Astro smartcard number, which Astro can "decrypt" that code in their system to reveal your actual smartcard/account details, hence take action against those who:
  • Illegally re-broadcast/re-transmit channels from Astro box to underground IPTV services that is commonly used on illegal Android TV boxes (especially EV**D, S**CL**D and many other not-that-well-known ones).
  • where the Astro box is registered under residential account, but they install/use in commercial premises (e.g. mamak, hotels, restaurants...).
Once Astro identified those smartcards that were used for illegal usage, I can imagine that they can:
  • Suspend that smartcard(s), hence the underground IPTV users who is watching that channel shall see message like 'This channel is not included in your subscription', hence it will disrupt the viewer's viewing of that channel through that illegal platform.
  • For commercial premises, Astro staffs shall pay a visit to that premise and drink tea with the shop manager there. biggrin.gif And convince them to convert to Astro for Business account ( https://business.astro.com.my/ ).
  • If sufficient evidence, they can conduct a police raid to that registered service address or some server rooms and confiscate this equipment that equipment... Therefore, this incident will appear in the news.

Nah don't worry... Even without Astro, they will find ways to get pay TV channels from other country's pay TV providers.
