Loki fell into the dimension where he met Thanos and The Other.. They gave Loki a scepter and a Chitauri army to rule Earth. In return Loki is to retrieve the Tesseract cube from Earth <--- the villain's motivation in The Avengers

As for Thor's return to Earth, it is briefly mentioned in the jet scene, after Germany, that Odin would have used dark magic to transport Thor. In Thor movie, Loki uses magic and "secret paths" to bring the Frost Giants into Asgard.. Perhaps, this will be explained further in Thor 2

Joss Whedon was officially announced to be writing and directing Avengers 2...

Joss Whedon will return to write and direct the Untitled Marvel’s Avengers Sequel, which Walt Disney Studios announced today will hit theaters on May 1, 2015.

“The Avengers” stands as the third highest grossing film of all time, (behind “Avatar” and “Titanic”) with a domestic gross of $617 million to date and over $1.4 billion worldwide.

Chris Hemsworth, who played the Nordic god of thunder, “Thor,” said shooting the first Avengers film was “intimidatingly fun.” “Joss has this way of managing everyone in the room, giving everyone space but knowing when to push,” Hemsworth said, while on junket to promote “Thor.” The Australian actor is also working on “Thor: The Dark World,” which comes out in November 2013.

Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, also discussed the dynamics of shooting the ensemble film. “It was a lot easier on “The Avengers.” “Captain America” was a lot of responsibility because you were the only one. Once we got on “The Avengers” set, a lot of the load is lifted because you get to share the responsibility with other people,” said Evans, who insisted there was no competition amongst the actors off-camera.

Despite the fact that viewers have three years to speculate on all the details, this is not exactly a surprising timeline for Marvel. Thus far, two Marvel films are already scheduled for release in 2013, “Iron Man 3″ and “Thor: The Dark World” and another two for 2014, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

What’s more, Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015, Marvel said in a statement last week. “As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s ‘Avengers 2′ as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC.  He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

For those interested, original Bluray/Bluray 3D is now available locally, one month earlier than US release.
