My friend just told me spend in ctrip then buy a legoland ticket alike, so maybe can booking a hotel room or tour and paying CNY wallet?
*
Well, it may work because Ctrip is meant for Chinese travellers. smile.gif
Anyway, I still prefer to spend in China since I travel there quite often.

Came back from China yesterday and I cannot imagine my life without e-wallets.

I exchanged RMB 500 cash and only spent RMB 85 cash because my phone had no 4G that time (I was in a high speed rail train). laugh.gif

I have both Alipay and WeChat Pay, both are equally convenient. My friend prefers Alipay because she can earn interest (only for verified Mainlanders). WeChat has its advantage too, for e.g. hawkers by roadside, most of them are normal end users, they prefer WeChat Pay.

My advice? Get both, no regret at all. Don’t bother about credit cards because they don’t accept ours except if you visit first tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai and etc.

My next trip challenge will be, I will only bring RMB 100 cash for whole trip. I haven’t encountered situation where e-wallet payments are not accepted. Even old grandma of 80 years old selling food by roadside accepts WeChat Pay.

haha, maybe you should try in bullet train when 5G era.
Yup e-wallet is very convience in China, Japan, Korea.
Just a phone or card can survive whole day...
*
Actually their connectivity has improved a lot, I recalled more blind spots during my last few trips. Now most of the time I was still able to get 4G in their HSR.

So yeah, the disadvantage of e-wallets? Internet connection. You will need Internet coverage to use it.

Alipay can also pay with Face ID. smile.gif

How do you top up or reload the ewallet in China?!
*
My China friends who work in Malaysia top up both e-wallets for me.

Can we have Alipay acc without china acc?
*
Yes, I don't have too.

QUOTE(liuyouken @ Sep 3 2018, 09:04 PM)
Ya... It is widely accepted in China and it is weird if we use cash... it is convenient as we just need to bring the mobile phone... Good for tracking and monitoring purpose as well
*
Yes, every time I visit China, the cash I brought over is getting lesser. laugh.gif
They look at you one kind if pay with cash. laugh.gif

I’ve alipay acc, but it mentioned acc not verified too.. so if I need to use Alipay to pay, I need someone to transfer a RMB to my Alipay?
*
Yes, or link with CC (can use for Taobao only), cannot use it to pay via QR code.
For us only account with linked balance can use to scan QR code, applies for WeChat Pay too. Strangely I cannot scan Alipay in Malaysia even with credit left, luckily I can use in China.

Because your Alipay is China version instead Global version?
My Alipay also old account, payment with CC is working ok for me these few years, so really no bother much about ID verification.
*
Mine also can link with CC but cannot use it to pay in China, I can only use it to pay Taobao with 3% charge. If wanna scan QR code, need to have credit balance. Got my account 5 years ago.
It must be verified China Mainland account to use in Malaysia.

Sorry OT. I think we should stop discussion about Alipay here or someone can create new topic about Alipay. laugh.gif

Ya... they will look at you and think which century are you from laugh.gif Basically e-wallet like Wechat Pay has replaced cash as the medium of exchange in China... it has every feature of cash and even do the job better... one of the major drawback is the connectivity issue like you said

Wechat Pay just started here and a long way to go.
*
They don't have small change to give you back, so prefer payment over digital way. laugh.gif

I really wish we can go further especially credit cards now have SST, I wish e-wallets business will bloom here.

QUOTE(tanaumaga @ Sep 3 2018, 10:34 PM)
I only have wechat pay activated.

For my last china trip, i only use cash for hotel deposit, as they dont acccept e-wallet payment; and this one shop that only accepts alipay.

Its really nice to go through the day without needing to reach for your wallet to pay, and the hussle to keep the small notes and coins, even beggar's donation can be done by wechat pay.
*
Yes, beggars accept WeChat pay. laugh.gif

It depends on three sides to make that happen...government needs to encourage the usage of e wallets and also control the flooded e wallet market, merchants need to adopt e wallets, and consumers like us need to use it.

Anyone here who wishes to see the day that our lovely Malaysia becomes a cashless country, please support and use e wallets (Boost, Wechat Pay, Favepay etc.) more often when the merchant accepts it.
*
No worries, I use a lot of e-wallets here too. laugh.gif

GrabPay and Boost are the main ones. Sometimes Fave. I think that's all.

Buying metro train tickets still require cash. I've encountered twice at train stations where people asking me for money to buy train tickets and they would transfer it back to me via wechat pay. They are so used to not bringing cash out. biggrin.gif
*
I think these days can scan QR code, my friend told me she kinda saw it in Beijing. I didn't go to Beijing this time so cannot validate, however I boarded on public bus and I will need to turn on my WeChat QR code to let the scanner scan and charge my wallet for the fare. This is in Guangxi.

I went to Beijing during May 2018. Whole trip spending using cash. Ticket to Great Wall, Dynasty Palace, etc all also can buy with cash.

I am going to Guangzhou again on 8 September 2018. Will bring cash as well. E-wallet is for convenience, but that doesn't mean they don't accept cash.
*
Wow wow, since when did I say they didn't accept cash? Don't misinterpret my post la. I travel to China every year, sometimes few times per year, of course I know how it works there. I was just saying its convenience, without accessing to wallet is a great convenience.

QUOTE(coolguy99 @ Sep 4 2018, 08:24 AM)
How is alipay different from Boost? Do they have this separate terminal like Boost for merchant to scan? Just wondering how is the adoption rate so high
*
Some use terminals, some just stick QR code on their counter, just scan and pay.

Luckily I checked my wallet yesterday and realised I still have RM 2 discount for reload. I received reminder while I was in China though, quickly used the free cash credit by HLB and RM 2 discount to purchase XOX reload for my dad. thumbup.gif

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that kind of terminal doesn't exist in China. When I was in China, I only saw merchants that either have the QR code sticker on their counter or it's implemented into their POS system so that they will scan the customer's code instead.

The terminal that we have here is just a stupid idea, that's where you will get bunch of BS like system down blah blah blah.
*
It exists, I used it in hotels which they scanned my code instead. smile.gif
Most of the time just the sticker though.

QUOTE(xperiaDROID @ Sep 4 2018, 10:32 AM)
Cool, but I wonder how many are using Grabpay though...

But I believe that the amount of users using Grabpay are more than Mcash, VCash, Kiplepay, Razer Pay etc.
*
I'm using GrabPay for my rides as I can reload with AmEx during weekends and use on weekdays. I use Grab to work everyday.
Plus, it has Tealive and now llao llao promo if pay with GrabPay. tongue.gif My colleagues purposely reloaded GrabPay for Tealive though they don't use Grab for rides.

Sorry for the confusion though, but what I meant by Grabpay is actually using it as an e wallet to pay for merchants, not for the fare.

Just curious how many are actually using it normally when paying for their meals and stuffs, aside from paying Grab rides.
I see...

It's different here I guess, the terminals are just common, even the place where I got my haircut uses one instead of a QR code sign/sticker.
*
Well, the merchants list for GrabPay is still not that extensive and hopefully will expand. I only use it to pay Tealive most of the time for promo purpose. tongue.gif

Yes, it should be the other way round to encourage adoption, stickers should be more common.

Grabpay can use Amex to top up. So that reason itself already make it outstanding from other e-wallet.

The problem with Grabpay is they don't allow transfer out to bank. So ppl cannot play the game, mean less users.

Use grabpay to pay for ride, for example, your house to KLIA/KLIA2, sometime get promo RM35 instead of RM65. So using grabpay to pay for ride is ALWAYS more benefit than straight charge to credit card.
*
The airport rides discount is only for new GrabPay users, for old timers like me didn't get to enjoy the free RM 35. sad.gif

Didn't know SG has so many e-payments, I think more than us? laugh.gif

But really, we should adopt this approach too. The only thing which puzzles me since each outlet (can be same merchant) has their unique QR code, how does that being unified? hmm.gif
