Hods for banks 60 to 100k? That's definitely out of range. Just check the many salary guide from Hays, Robert Walters, Michael Page, etc. Those in the 60k to 100k are outliers.

i'm surprised with the range too. The hod i know from oversea bank, hold HOD position (ED title) he/she is earning 25k per month approx, excluding performance bonus.

As for local bank IT HOD that I know, he is earning about 20k approx. SVP title.

The range quoted is definitely on the high end. Those are usually reserved for key positions within back office or Heads of front office like Corporate Banking or Treasury. I call them Senior Hods, definitely not the normal HoDs.

The ones you quoted is definitely the norm outside of those senior Hods, though can go up to 35k or 40k depending on specialty.

One holding retail secured/non secured loan , another holding channel department. So probably you are right, senior HODs

In Retail Banking, the senior Hods by default is usually the Head of Branches / Distribution. That should hit this range. Other than that, it is Bank dependent.

No wonder there is such a high turnaround for IT especially within the banking industry. My ex-colleagues who were mid level managers already with a VP title were already earning 20k onwards. Some of them had no direct reports and just individual contributors.

I assume your ex-colleagues are/were from business or revenue generating department? The SVP/ED who I mentioned above, she is leading nationwide branch managers. Probably my network isn't strong enough, the Ops and IT within my circle who are in banking, they are not earning that much. And bonus is around 3 months or less. Another close circle who I know, he is local bank head of it security drawing around 20k too, VP title.

So when you guys talking about a HOD can potentially draw up to 100k, it is a big eye opener to me notworthy.gif

I also know of a few cases like this. There are individual contributors who are lower ranked than HoDs, but earning higher than HoDs. But again, those are uncommon and not the norm. You will find that the gap between senior individual contributors and HoDs not to be very big at times, probably only 15 to 20%. A real weird structure we are in.

No, they were under the support function (non-revenue generating) within the Chief Strategy Officer's purview of teams focusing on digital initiatives.

I am surprised as well as I was recently hiring a full stack engineer and most of them were already commanding RM18k salary and their expectation was at least RM20k and my budget at the time was only RM15k sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

I ended up hiring a contractor instead for RM15k a month as it is cheaper for the company as we don't need to cover medical, EPF, etc..etc..

Edit: sharing some job postings online that offered up to RM20k for full stack and data engineers sweat.gif sweat.gif

Which i think is the issue and why many are jumping ship and joining tech companies and startups who offer higher salaries. I definitely do see HoDs in the couple of banks that I have been on the higher scale of salary but these are long term vested bankers, been in the firm for >20 years type. There are also exceptions where the HODs were hired from overseas and I knew one who made about RM3mil per annum (because needed to top what the person made overseas with the exchange rate and all).

Startup can definitely offer up to 20k or above but lack of job security. I used to have a developer (not the strongest dev within my team) who took up 25k offer from a well known startup but collapsed after 2 months. He came back to beg for job after. Another scenario, i recently on massive recruitment, interviewed a young chap full stack developer who just lost his job with US startup due to company financial crisis. He used to draw ard 8k usd.

If you look back to bank hierarchy. There are technical crews who is holding bigger title and draw above hod too. I seen that in bank for eg a master dba holding director title draw around 25k myr with alot subsidies and allowances. But this would require tons of year experience and certifications. Unlike the trend today, as long as you can do full stack (js etc) you got the money

I would not use the higher end of quoted scale as benchmark. For the 2 ads you posted, I would say realistic pay would be circa 15k. Usually hiring managers will not pay max amount.

For full stack (real ones), yes, range should be around what you mentioned.

Seems like your field is IT, and yes, today IT pay in banks has gone up due to much competition in the market. But even then, for 60 to 100k, it is usually for roles like EA, Head of Data, etc.

Ops and IT in banking, honestly isn't a big salary draw because the nature of their work is still very ops, and a lot of items are outsourced so the need to specialised or niche skillset is still relatively low as compared to a tech startup.

Title is also not really a good benchmark, because most is just to satisfy and ego boosting employees. For example, VP can be junior middle management at best, as you can have VP1, VP2, SVP1, SVP2, SEVP1, SEVP2, CxO .. so a VP title here is like a C-8, which doesn't sound as great at a VP title alone.

But it sounds great to outside parties 🙂

There are functional Head of Department and Head of Divisions, plus depending on which areas you are in, and of course, which company you are in.

A glocal bank does not pay high despite the branding, because their business is relatively small unless you are posted here as an expat. Local banks can pay higher than most glocal banks, however they do not have the charm of being able to move up to a regional / global role which can be a big stepping stone to one's career.

Has anyone switched job in the January - March window?

Would the new employer factor in the up and coming increment and bonus in March ?

How likely are they to pay you a sign on bonus versus to find someone else thar are willing to forego this bonus?

At the end of the day it would be based on the hiring company and how the candidate has negotiated with the hiring company. I know someone who left the firm on the 31st of Dec which mean he wouldn't get his bonus which paid out on the 1st of Jan but has managed to negotiate a sign-on bonus which is 3x his expected bonus instead.
