want ask some opinion Software Engineer (Backend Java) with 5 years experiences what current industry range for this position?

I think the folks here would find it tough to share because it also depends on your coding experience, where have you worked before and what have you worked on.

QUOTE(gundamsp01 @ Nov 7 2021, 08:32 PM)
around 14k, i am not senior though. But giving me the anxiety that I do not have room to grow and specialize in nothing.
At my current bank, i move from project to project very quickly (sometimes may even be different line of business, example: from credit card to call centre, etc).
Just focus on delivery and stakeholders management, product knowledge is secondary for my current role.

I had been rated highly at my current bank for my project management and stakeholders management skill.
However, I had been attending a few interviews, and the interviewer expressed that I am being paid highly yet not a subject matter expect in any product, which is the source of my fear for my career.
*
Don't worry too much about it as I have seen generalist PM earn up to RM40k a month without much focus on a subject matter. In actual fact, your experience with your bank itself and being a PM does make it a subject matter.

Anyway, it still doesn't resolve the old style management issue that i was talking about, as the problem came from the global management side.

Sounds like you work for HSBC

I'm referring to his technical abilities as IT is quite difficult to go into
*
You don't need the technical ability to be able to go into his line of work which is as a consultant to help deploy SaaS to his clients. He has the skill of what his employer is seeking, the experience of having used the product first hand. As a user as well as someone in the industry (F&B), he would have the knowledge of the intricacies that folks in technology would have. This is why consulting companies do hire folks from within the industry verticals in order to gain those experiences because it helps with the implementation portion of the project as well as even selling the software to new prospective clients. I bet he doesn't have to be too technical aside from understanding the logic of the system, how it is coupled together but rather he has the first-hand knowledge of what benefits that the system can bring to clients.

Yes, what Mavik said.

I picked up bits and pieces of DB/server management and other IT aspects as I go along the job, but don't have to be too technical. As we transition from on-prem to cloud, I also lost access to server so eventually those don't matter much. Make no mistake, it was still a very very steep learning curve for me at the beginning, as I learned configurations, writing custom PL/SQL formula syntax, etc.

We focus heavily on use case + how the system features relates to the business operations, essentially.
*
Absolutely respect to you, I know how difficult it is as well to experience that sort of learning curve as I had to go through the same as a guy who once worked at a factory and suddenly be put on SAP BASIS support.

IMHO, jump ship usually around 20-30% while internal promotion 10-15% from what I know in IT industry , another aspect would be through your negotiation skills. Good luck 😁
*
Also depends on the company that is hiring as well. For example, in my previous company, the max increment that we can offer to a candidate is only 15%. Anything more, we needed to seek for an exception and get approval all the way up to the CEO. Quite difficult to hire good candidates sad.gif

Oh...is 5% annual increment part of the promotion, or promotion 15% + 5% annual?

In my case, my company is doing even better these times and they state salaries are
"competitive".
*
For promotion there isn't really a fixed % because it depends on the level, department as well as job function.

Usually, there is a band for each level (e.g. manager 9k-15k) and it depends on how your promotion is negotiated and based on your performance, peers as well as market average as well. For example, if you were a full stack developer who got promoted to a manager band. In this example, I use the market average out there is say RM15k, there is a higher chance you get to RM15k salary especially if you also perform at a level higher than your manager peers. Again it isn't a sure thing and it is always a case-by-case basis.

At 40k, it is considered as on the higher band for most functional heads in the bank. And with HR being a cost center (granted am not familiar with HR's scale), I do find it not easy to believe that 40k is on the lower scale. I know both front office, middle office and back office, 40k for functional head is definitely on the high side for all 3 of them. For front office, probably above average, but still on the higher side.
*
I guess it depends, I know that in one of the previous banks that I have worked at, 40k and above is usually at the GM level regardless of whether you are in the profit centre or support role (e.g. compliance, risk, finance, etc..etc..).

GM is usually C-suite. Or considered senior functional head with 2 to 3 functions below the person.
*
No, they aren't C-Suite. Most of them report to Heads of Departments who then report to the C-Suites. Each GM basically manage a function below them whilst the Heads of Departments manage the GMs.

My post above refer to Hods. Even for HoDs, 40k is really on the high side. If GMs in your definition is below HoDs, their pay should be lower.
*
Oh i am not guessing, I know for a fact that their pay is between RM40k-RM50k. HOD's tend to get about 60-100k whilst C-Levels compensation is in the millions depending on their function which is a mix of equity as well. C-Levels all have 2-4 year contracts.

Hods for banks 60 to 100k? That's definitely out of range. Just check the many salary guide from Hays, Robert Walters, Michael Page, etc. Those in the 60k to 100k are outliers.
*
It was the case in the two local banks that I have been in. The salary guide is an average of sorts and serves as a guide. 60k to 100k is pretty normal for these high positions especially HOD whose revenues are in the hundreds of millions.

QUOTE(Win Win Inspiration @ Jan 4 2022, 12:01 PM)
With annual compensation in the millions for C-Levels, meaning they are making 6-figure salary every month?
*
Yup, most of the public listed companies CEO's are public knowledge as the company has to publish it to Bursa.

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/cove...-take-home-2020

Check the article above to see what they earn. Of course total compensation covers equity (stock options), bonuses and other stuff as well.

QUOTE(budang @ Jan 4 2022, 03:17 PM)
I think depends on department / company size too. HOD in one of my previous company get paid around 28-32k. IT dept.
*
Yes of course, as the topic was related towards banking, I was sharing about the compensation within the FSI industry.

Actually, these are the ones we know of as their pay is publicly available information. There are tonnes of others who earn a lot more especially owners of private companies and their families.

i'm surprised with the range too. The hod i know from oversea bank, hold HOD position (ED title) he/she is earning 25k per month approx, excluding performance bonus.

As for local bank IT HOD that I know, he is earning about 20k approx. SVP title.
*
No wonder there is such a high turnaround for IT especially within the banking industry. My ex-colleagues who were mid level managers already with a VP title were already earning 20k onwards. Some of them had no direct reports and just individual contributors.

I assume your ex-colleagues are/were from business or revenue generating department? The SVP/ED who I mentioned above, she is leading nationwide branch managers. Probably my network isn't strong enough, the Ops and IT within my circle who are in banking, they are not earning that much. And bonus is around 3 months or less. Another close circle who I know, he is local bank head of it security drawing around 20k too, VP title.

So when you guys talking about a HOD can potentially draw up to 100k, it is a big eye opener to me  notworthy.gif
*
No, they were under the support function (non-revenue generating) within the Chief Strategy Officer's purview of teams focusing on digital initiatives.

I am surprised as well as I was recently hiring a full stack engineer and most of them were already commanding RM18k salary and their expectation was at least RM20k and my budget at the time was only RM15k sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

I ended up hiring a contractor instead for RM15k a month as it is cheaper for the company as we don't need to cover medical, EPF, etc..etc..

Edit: sharing some job postings online that offered up to RM20k for full stack and data engineers sweat.gif sweat.gif

I also know of a few cases like this. There are individual contributors who are lower ranked than HoDs, but earning higher than HoDs. But again, those are uncommon and not the norm. You will find that the gap between senior individual contributors and HoDs not to be very big at times, probably only 15 to 20%. A real weird structure we are in.
*
Which i think is the issue and why many are jumping ship and joining tech companies and startups who offer higher salaries. I definitely do see HoDs in the couple of banks that I have been on the higher scale of salary but these are long term vested bankers, been in the firm for >20 years type. There are also exceptions where the HODs were hired from overseas and I knew one who made about RM3mil per annum (because needed to top what the person made overseas with the exchange rate and all).

Has anyone switched job in the January - March window?

Would the new employer factor in the up and coming increment and bonus in March ?

How likely are they to pay you a sign on bonus versus to find someone else thar are willing to forego this bonus?
*
At the end of the day it would be based on the hiring company and how the candidate has negotiated with the hiring company. I know someone who left the firm on the 31st of Dec which mean he wouldn't get his bonus which paid out on the 1st of Jan but has managed to negotiate a sign-on bonus which is 3x his expected bonus instead.

Seems like your field is IT, and yes, today IT pay in banks has gone up due to much competition in the market. But even then, for 60 to 100k, it is usually for roles like EA, Head of Data, etc.

Nothing as exciting at IT, mostly corporate development and digital.

I just got a job offer RM7500.
Working on pretty much the same thing. But I am considering to decline the offer due to I am comfortable working with current co, and there is a lot more to learn. What do you guys think? Should i take the risk and jump?
*
What is life without any risk? If the jump is >30%, try to see if you can get a counter offer from your current company. Otherwise why not take the jump.
