QUOTE(wingy @ Sep 29 2015, 05:18 PM) In fact we are lucky to have still public medical schools still recognised by the SMC. Do you know that UM medics who graduated after December 1989 are no longer recognised by the GMC UK ? The private medical schools in Malaysia are money making businesses. Many might have thought that NUMED is part of Newcastle University UK - it is not.Yea, our universities are sadly no longer recognised by the gmc, hence the majority of Malaysians will try to aim to get to a uk medical school instead for recognition and speciality training. I would have to agree and disagree with your statement there though. The Numed campus is indeed part of Newcastle university and students who graduated there are eligible for gmc registration and even for gmc recognised fy training in Malaysia as well just recently. However, the immigration law stands in the way of gaining entry to competitive cmt, cst, GP and etc training. With limited places even for their local graduates, what are the chances for graduates from Malaysia.

QUOTE(indycolt @ Sep 29 2015, 05:10 PM) Seems that our dear neighbors know the deal better than other countries heh.. What other countries?....non of the msian degrees are recognised out of Msia....except um ukm by spore, Monash msia by oz, numed by GMC, and the Irish programmes by Ireland.... The later 2 offer almost no chance of work in the parent countries.... This post has been edited by limeuu: Sep 29 2015, 10:25 PM

smc never recognised msian degrees, until 2007....however they have accepted for registration, um graduates for a long time, on a case by case basis....hence there are many um graduates working in spore...
for that matter, until 2003, they only recognised 2 degrees from australia...sydney and melbourne....and they still do not recognise any of the new ones like jcu, uws, griffith, deakin, wollonggong etc...

Initially, the GMC UK had a dilemma as to whether they would allow registration from Numed Malaysia graduates.

numed, being a first, did put gme in a quandary as to how to deal with their graduates....this now appears sorted out....the degree will be recognised by gme...the housemanship performed in selected hospitals in msia will be recognised as equivalent as f1 of uk...so a numed graduate completing housemanship in one of the approved hospitals can apply to get full registration with gme...
that says nothing about ability to work in the uk after...again theoretically, one can apply to enter cst/st...and if offered a job, will be eligible for a tier2 visa...
that remains to be tested...if it is possible....as it is, amongst uk local doctors, it is very competitive...but with the new nhs junior doctors' contract, large scale migration out may mean more vacancies....

QUOTE(Jckc @ Sep 30 2015, 12:45 AM) It is good if the graduates can secure training in UK. Then we will have more UK universities setting up base here. But if its only a few manage to get training, it wont make a big difference. IMU pms is still the best bet.

Yeah, it would stop the influx of international students into the uk for medical education if speciality training was offered. Cross your fingers and hope the imu pms programme is able to last as long as possible. As limeuu said about the vacancies due to the new junior doc contract, I wonder How many would still want to pursue their training there regarding removal of banding, increase in hours of work and etc.

Relative is considering Singapore now and will have a little taste of the system as he will be doing his elective in NUH next year. Decision should not be hasty, I feel.

spore is a narrow window at the moment....they still need 150 or so new doctors over what nus/duke can produce...
ntu will graduate their first batch in 2019, but it's small numbers...nevertheless that will reduce the number of overseas grads they will take....

I originally scheduled my interview for the Feb 2016 intake in November, but had to shift it earlier by a couple of weeks due to some circumstances. However that means that I would not have attended a hospital observation that I had planned to go before the interview. Do you think a lack of observation/attachment will have a hit on the overall interview? I mean I have done a bunch of volunteer work but I feel the hospital observation will play a big part.

Oh one thing I gotta know, how long did you have to wait for your offer to be given? Very very crucial to a stupid situation I landed myself in.

I did my interview on the 17th Sept and I got the acceptance letter on the 21st (PMS route). I applied with achieved A level grades so I don't get a conditional offer. Are you Malaysian?

QUOTE(indycolt @ Oct 1 2015, 05:09 PM) Yep! Any reason why you didn't apply for an earlier intake? It's complicated. I am a NZ citizen and I always want to do med in Australia, I got the grades but did badly in my UMAT. I did my A level in the UK and my GCSEs were not great enough to apply so I didn't apply to medicine for UCAS. Medicine is always my dream so I guess IMU will be a great chance and hope to transfer to a med school in the UK. I didn't apply to the august intake because I was thinking to wait till I get replies from the unis in Australia. Now, I think I will never hear from the med schools in Australia
