Anyone owns the latest Shield TV/Pro 2019?

Any thoughts on the device? My main purpose is for Netflix Atmos support & local blu-ray downloaded files (MKV/BDMV) around 30-80gb size.

Currently have Minix Neo U9-H & UBP X-700, both does not have Netflix Atmos support.
And playing local content via External HDD would occasionally gets the movie hang or even stutter.
Not sure if this is due to both device processor being unable to handle playback for big file size...

How are your experience with Netflix Atmos & Local playback content via external HDD? Any hang/stutter issues? BDMV any issue?

Previous owner of Minix Neo U9-H. Yup disappointing it couldn't handle 4K movies very well. Switched to Shield 2017, problem solved. Not sure about Netflix Atmos though.

Not the pro. Brought it physically back with me minus box when I flew back from my business trip. It came with the shield gamepad and remote.
*
Ahh ok, the 2019 model they really skimp out on the pro with the controller. Would have gone with the non pro if they at least had 1 USB port.

Ahh so I’m not the only one with playback issues with the Minix... I had no issues playing the new Shield with Netflix Atmos and also 4K Atmos through USB 😆
So much happier with this... not to mention smooth UI, not like that laggy crap Minix

Yeah the form factor changed for the 2019 model. Mine is the previous model with USB ports but no sdcard slot.

Much more useful than a silly sdcard slot...
Btw do you know which file explorer is the most stable/safe for the Shield?

I use solid file explorer. Rarely use it though since I don't browse the filesystem for media.

My main usage is Netflix, YouTube and Plex (I have a separate Plex media server PC that has access to my local files).

USD150 for the Pro? That is damn cheap dude, plus shipping, tax & Sirim.
Thanks, so much happier with it compared to the Minix.

Glad you like it, I didn't own it yet but I know it will be awesome.
Can't find a valid reason to replace my Apple TV 4K box yet. Haha!

I only recommended Nvidia Shield or Apple TV 4K if budget not an issue. Haha!

If you only use them for streaming then not necessary to replace your Apple TV. Only if you watch local content then it is a good choice with all their lossless audio + DV passthrough.
Few months ago Nvidia said they were in talks with Apple to bring their Apple+ to their Shield, if that happens then there isn't much reason to stick with Apple TV box lol.

I mostly use for local content and Apple TV 4K did a brilliant job.

Too many people though Apple is more in stream and strict control on local content.

Frank speak this is not the case, Apple had freaking well support on local content.
I had 3000+ local films and 99% most of my 4K HDR collection is REMUX copy and Apple TV 4K never fail me at all.

It support full lossless track by direct playback all track in multi channel PCM format, this is good as you no need to worried your sound system support or not all the format, you just need to ensure your system support multi channel PCM format. This help for DTS-HD as my Soundbar not support it, but due to Apple auto render to Multi-channel PCM, this make me no worried on DTS-HD track.

Ya you do miss the Atmos because now Apple only support Atmos in DD+ but not Atmos in TrueHD but this is not very huge differences as I had personally compare with original 4K UHD blu-ray which run as Atmos, and frank speak it is not very big differences at all.

That the reason I don't find the need of replace it because Apple TV 4K also support Lossless track pass through as well as nearly all type of HDR passthru, this include HDR10, Dolby Vision and also HLG HDR.

You talk on Dolby Vision passthru for local content? Nearly 100% local content is not Dolby Vision but only HDR10 because Dolby Vision unable to remux out, you need a full 4K UHD blu-ray for Dolby Vision and not much people doing this.

Also I find Dolby Vision is not that big differences as well, thanks to LG's own proprietary HDR solution which process HDR signal dynamically frame by frame using enhanced dynamic tone mapping. This process make the normal HDR and Dolby Vision basically no different. I had compare it as well and I can't notice the different. Dolby Vision in LG OLED Cinema mode do far darker than normal HDR Cinema mode which is not my liking, thanks to LG give alternate option where once you change LG OLED of Dolby Vision to Home Cinema instead of Cinema, it is like exactly LG OLED of HDR in Cinema mode.

Now the only issue is I don't have any device capable to smoothly playback the only 8K HDR film I have, it is a documentary call "Wunderkammer: World of Wonder", probably my next TV Box will be need to support 8K HDR playback. Haha!

I will buy the Nvidia Shield if this TV Box can playback 8K HDR film as currently my Apple TV 4K only manage to playback around 12 mins but then it will crash! Haha! My few years ago Core i7 with Nvidia Geforce GTX-970M laptop is playing the film like 5 fps. My LG C9 direct connect the HDD is unplayable, it said format not support. tongue.gif

That depends on your local content, mine are ripped BDMV files so DV is still there. But still single layered, not dual layered so not sure if you still consider that as DV lol
But yes, the difference btw DV and standard HDR is minimal and differences varies depending on the content. As for LG’s proprietary method I can’t comment on that since I don’t own LG TVs lol.
Someone posted screenshots on 1080p vs HDR10 vs DV vs dual layered DV. Minimal differences that you won’t notice unless you compare side by side.

https://forums.plex.tv/t/some-thoughts-on-t...ty-tools/536340

Similarly for audio, differences btw DD+ Atmos and TrueHD Atmos isn’t that big unless you focus and pay attention to every detail. But as you are immerse in a movie through visual and aural at the same time, generally people won’t be able to notice any difference.
However I do notice audible differences btw physical Blu-ray Discs vs Blu-ray ripped/remux. So for movies that I really like, I buy original discs themselves.

8k? Still long long more time before that takes off la. Even 4K is only recently starting to take off, and that is after 7-8 years after the first 4K tv was released.

Actually today make me feel 4K HDR is not a must if you have a group of people that very well known to remaster / transfer the film.

I just watch Marriage Story - Criterion Collection edition, OMG! From details to color is far far far better than original version Netflix provided in Dolby Vision. Off course Netflix is compress but color & film noise wise, Criterion Collection did far better.

They is no different of REMUX v/s original, you know what is REMUX right, it is fully unaltered version of original DVD / BD / UltraHD BD.

I also do REMUX myself all original BD I have as I am freaking lazy insert disc already.
I can't REMUX UltraHD BD as I don't have UltraHD BD disc drive for PC. It is freaking expensive and difficult to get.

Ripped is compress if it is compression used on it and normally it is compress and people will not call it or put it as REMUX because REMUX is no compression, it is exactly same size and same quality as original where normally people use MKVToolNix to REMUX from original TS file where store at BD or UltraHD BD.

Maybe 8K won't be take off but I just want to playback that documentary. tongue.gif

Yes 4K definitely not a must, some of the mastering for 4K can be even worse than the 1080p blu rays. Terminator 2 4k wasn't that popular with enthusiasts lol

That is supposed to be so. However i have compared a number of Remux copies with my own original blu-ray discs in the past and i do hear significant audible differences to me. Don't ask me why because i don't know either but my ears tells me differently lol

So far I had another 2 titles did bad in 4K HDR, the worst is the 1st Superman movie, this is terrible bad! I hope Warner Bros redo it.
Second is King Kong (Peter Jackson edition).

But most the time remastered in 4K HDR still far better than 1080p blu-ray, here some oldest title that make you jaw drop restoration.
2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, The Doors, Bram Stoker's Dracula, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Easy Rider, Lawrence of Arabia, Schindler's List, The Shining, War of the Worlds, The Mask of Zorro, The Wizard of Oz.

It's been a long long time since i've watched Zorro... time to revisit and watch my old flame Zeta biggrin.gif
