Previously i got posted my itinery for my trip to Japan.
And really many thanks for the input.

Now I'm looking over the trains trips.
Seems like its more convenient to travel around in metro (subways) and monorail mostly when we are inside tokyo, osaka and kyoto. And even between Kyoto and Osaka its more convenient and fast using subways? I hope I am not mistaken.

Previously, some member introduced Hokuriku Arch Pass to me. 24000 yen per pax X 2 = 48000 yen.

I've calculated my trip from Tokyo to Toyama (Shirakawago) to Osaka which is around 44000 yen already. And once i've reach Osaka, that is the end of the usage for the pass  right?

Here's my breakdown for the main city travel:
Early morning, goto Tokyo Station, take Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama Station. (around 8am)  ¥ 12,530 X 2 ¥25,060

Shirakawago -> Kanazawa Station East Gate  ¥1850 X 2 ¥ 3700
Walk to Kanazawa Station JR take LTD. EXP THUNDERBIRD 28 / 32 to Osaka  ¥7650 X 2 ¥15302

Total: ¥44062

From my own data here, seems like its just easier to get a PASMO card and buy the train tickets for the JR trains. Please correct me if i am wrong.
*
1. Bus from Shirakawago to Kanazawa is not covered I think.

2. Depending when u start activate it and your itinerary, it should also cover the JR trains in Kansai (eg if you travel to Kobe, Nara and Osaka-Kyoto). It also covers your trip to Kansai Airport.

3. Generally if the saving is very little, you should just skip the pass. There could be better transportation options instead of forcing yourself to just JR trains.

4. Shinkansen ticket you need to buy from JR Ticket office

For day 5, I slot in Hakone and Shinjuku due to same route. Beside Tokyo Tower, any place to visit in that region?

Any comment?
*
I suggest you take out Ginza and go back your hotel to have an early rest. Will be too tired since you have a midnight flight and reach Tokyo early morning

Then on Day 2, you should go early to Tokyo Disneyland. Ideally half or 1 hr before the park opening times.

I got few bottles back when i travelled early this year but couldnt get more due to our custom's quota..

Yes I am interested in getting the airport limited edition..any one could help? Didnot see them during my trip..
*
i think airport stock now also running dry because ppl just buy regardless of the price.

Usually there will still have some Hakushu 18-year for 50,000 yen but I think it should be out of stock now. Suntory announced they are discontinuing Hakushu and everyone is buying it like mad in order to collect or flip.

Hi, anyone bought and used the Hakone 2 day free pass from Klook? I know it cover the roundtrip transportation from Shinjuku to Hakone and all the other transportation like cable cable car, rope way, cruise and buses. The question is does the pass also cover transportation to Gotemba Premium Outlet from Hakone? If yes, which station/stop do I need to board to Gotemba Outlet?
*
Yes. There's 2 Tozan bus line that go to Gotemba Premium Outlet. It's actually like a normal bus service, so it will have several stops along the way. So, you just have to find the nearest bus stop.

hi guys, wanna ask, how is the quality of digi roaming in japan? just found out got RM25 (3 days 2gb) prepaid roaming with 30min call. Link below.

https://new.digi.com.my/roaming/roaming-pass
*
roaming actually will depend on which host network u roam on in Japan. for digi roaming passes to work, u need to roam on Docomo which is the largest telco in JP.

anyway, all JP telco company network quality is very good. so don't need to worry actually.

Planning for a trip to Osaka in mid of Sept, while looking for accommodation, my friend who work in Japan told me about the Minpaku law to be go into effect in June and it might affect the airbnb hosts, anyone know if it's safe to book the airbnb accommodation now or after June?
*
better wait and see after June? I think you can still try your luck and booked, since if hosts cancelled you still get fund refund. But, you should have back-up plan in mind.

it seems the law will be very messy. if you can afford it, be safe and book hotels straight.

I'm planning for honeymoon to Osaka/Kyoto and Tokyo next April. Do you all have advise whether I should head to Osaka/Kyoto or Tokyo first? I plan to arrive at one city and depart from the other city.
*
I think either way is fine, but prefer starting at Osaka/Kyoto then Tokyo based on few reasons.

1) Assuming you are just taking AirAsia, the KUL-Osaka have better timing (morning flight, reaching around 3pm) compare to KUL-Tokyo (reaching after 9pm). For the flight back, Tokyo-KL has a midnight flight (around 11.50pm) which means you have time to go around on your last day

2) I assume you are going to Hakone/Fuji Lake on the Tokyo leg. So, it's best to leave the relaxing part of your trip to later after you are exhausted from all the walking around in Osaka/Kyoto and Tokyo city

Hi sifus, this will be my wife and I first time in Japan and our honeymoon. Please see below my draft itinerary. We will be arriving at Tokyo on Day 0 night. Any suggestions especially for Day 6 and Day 9? Thank you in advance.

I suppose you should consider to stay at a nice ryokan with onsen, since it's your honeymoon...you know devil.gif

Day 5 you could do Hakone trip, stay a night at ryokan, then go to Odawara station on Day6 and take the bullet train to Kyoto. It is also nice to relax after 2 days in Disneyland and DisneySEA.

You can actually fit Tsujiki/Toyosu market on Day 2 if u want since you are going to Ginza (presumably during the day)

Hi, i have a question about using passes for Shinkansen (in my case, it's Kansai-hiroshima Pass), do you still have to go get tickets even when you're opting for unreserved seats? If you do want reserved seats, the extra seating ticket can only be bought over the counter?
*
EDIT

Apparently you can. My bad.

For unreserved, just pass thru. If u want reserved seats, you need to buy a ticket and pay the limited express charge.

QUOTE(jhua @ Jun 20 2018, 10:20 PM)
Hi all, this is such an informative thread, I have learnt a lot reading all the valuable replies here.

I will be flying to Japan with my brother and parents mid-October for 8 days. We've got air tickets from Malaysia to NRT, NRT to KIX, NGO to HND and lastly departing from NRT back to Malaysia. *Tickets for NGO-HND are not purchased yet.

We are planning to spend most of our time in the Kansai region, mainly Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya. We will spending our last day in Tokyo for our fly back early the next morning.

I'd like to seek your suggestions on the following, its not fully planned out yet but just wanted to map out the timeline. Would appreciate your valuable feedback. I am looking for a relaxing trip with more sightseeing than shopping.

Day 1 -Arrive NRT early morning, Depart to KIX and commute to Kyoto
Day 2 - Kyoto
Day 3 - Kyoto
Day 4 - Depart to Nagoya
Day 5 - Nagoya
Day 6 - Depart Nagoya to Tokyo
Day 7 - Tokyo
Day 8 - Return back to Malaysia

What do you think about the timeline above?

In addition to that, Id like to slot in a few things:

1. If I want to spend 1-2 days in Osaka. Where should i slot it in? on my 1st and 2nd day?

2. Has anyone tried doing the Amanohashidate boathouse tour? I'd like to slot in for my Tokyo leg.

3. Would it be convenient to travel to Nagoya from Kyoto? Should I reduce the number of days in Nagoya to make way for more days in Osaka?
*
1. Yes. If just sight-seeing for you, 1 day is enough to cover the main attractions - Osaka Castle

3. There is direct bullet train (35-60min). Also got bus which takes you abt 2.5 hours.

Never been to Nagoya but I don’t think there are a lot of things need to see. Maybe by the time u finish Kyoto, u tired of seeing shrines lol

4. Nagoya got bullet train to Tokyo also. Can consider it instead of flying

Oh...whyyyyy. thanks for the heads up. I think its disneySea the one my friend went.

I guess everything will need to be early to avoid them
*
u won't beat and avoid the Jap crowd in Disneyland/DisneySEA. The Japanese seriously loves their theme parks

only way is if you stay at Disneyland Hotel which will give u a 15-min early entry into the park.

i saw my friends pic, theres no pic where theres no crowd hahaha so i was thinking whether he was late there or what
*
Nope. Even in a normal mid-week days, there is still relatively a lot of visitors. But you could still enjoy the park and most of the rides if you plan well and arrive early.

Also, not all the Japanese ppl who visit the park actually is going for the rides. You'll notice a lot of them are 'camping' in strategic areas just so they can get a good shot of the parade/outdoor shows etc.

I am planning to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto using the Shinkansen trains in Sept. However I am not sure how to buy in advance as some websites has mentioned that the fastest train Nozomi are not able to be used with Japan Rail Pass.

Some of my friends have also advised me to only buy the tickets at the train station in Tokyo as there are plenty of trains servicing that line. Also the seat reservation some people told me better to reserve the seats however it can only be done at the counter when I buy the ticket.

Can anyone that has travelled using the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto please do advice?
*
1. If you just travel 1-way, it’s not worth using Japan Rail Pass. Purchase the ticket at the counter.

2. Yes, you can’t use JR Pass for Nozomi.

3. Japan Shinkansen hardly get fully occupied unless it’s Golden Week. So don’t worry about getting a seat even if you buy it last minute.

MAS pricing system is a bit sot sot 1.

Early June I need to book a MAS flight to Mumbai. Somehow, the Business Class fare is cheaper than Economy class by RM100-200 lol

Didn't know it was Business Class until later on

Nope, not going to store in kawaguchiko, i booked a hotel nearby the station, just that it is a bit troublesome to carry the luggage if i am taking bus from shinjuku....
Either storing in Shinjuku or direct take bus from Narita to kawaguchiko...

thanks for the explanation on metro pass...i will need to plan my route first to know what kind of pass i should be getting...
*
or from airport, just use delivery service to send your luggage to your hotel in Tokyo? Then, you can just carry a backpack for your Kawaguchiko trip.

If you put in locker, it will means 2 days of usage, so the cost also around 1000-1200yen?? Add a few more hundred yen and you can have it deliver to your hotel, why not?

most of the time, they are ok with it since you are staying with them. done this a few time without any issues. And mine was for 3-5 days in advance at least

Thanks for the recommendations, the first night we won't have dinner provided by the accommodation so happy to check out Hippari Dako  smile.gif
My brother will be renting a car so transport is not an issue for the Nikko-Kinugawa-Nasu leg of our trip.

Interesting that you mention 3D2N at either one place because at first glance, Hakone seems to be pretty much doable in a day.
Fuji 5 Lakes should probably deserve an extra day as the area seems huge and the attractions look scattered around.

If you had to choose between one, which would be your recommendation especially for the beautiful autumn leaves?
Thanks!
*
Both location has their charm but Kawaguchiko area will usually be the preferred choice because it's closer to Mt. Fuji. And you can get beautiful photoshoot of autumn leaves and Mt Fuji at Chureito Pagoda. If you like theme park/roller-coaster rides, there is also Fuji-Q Highland.

Hakone is more well-known for its hot spring and ryokan

Yeah the main reason for me to go to Kawa would be that scenic pagoda and of course Fujisan.
Not really interested in theme parks so no worries there.
Will be experiencing quite a bit of onsens and ryokans at Nikko-Kinu so I'm leaning more towards Kawa over Hakone at the moment.

On a sidenote, is 2 full days in Tokyo enough or should I allocate 3?
*
really depends on individual

for shopping lovers, definitely 2 days not enough to fit everything. basically you need to cover Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku and Ginza at least? + Akihabara if you are gadget geek and anime/manga fan

that's on top of other attractions like Asakusa, Ueno, Tokyo Tower, Skytree, Tsukiji Fish Market

then special interest attractions like Ghibli Museum, Snoopy Museum, One Piece Museum, Odaiba Gundam, Tokyo National Museum etc etc
