To be honest, it doesn't take me too long depending on the manner of defeat. Losing to AC Milan in Athens was a bitter pill to swallow considering we played much better than we did in Istanbul. However I was proud of the boys and didn't take the defeat all that hard. I was also proud to see everyone stay behind after the game to cheer the lads on as they went to receive their 2nd place medals, and also applaud the AC Milan team as they went to receive their winners medals. Fairplay, they outplayed us in Istanbul and we won. It was the reverse this time round.

In the league, only defeats against the mancs really hurt, mainly because of the stick I receive. Over the years though, I've become a little desensitized due mainly to the fact that we've not won anything for a long time until recently. I understand the word, "recently" is subjective. Let me put it this way, "recently" to me means within this decade, not the past 2 or 3 years. You have to keep in mind that this is so because it's been a really long time since we've won anything significant before 2001. Let me reiterate again to people who think a barren run of 2-3 years is a catastrophe, because it is not! Consider that fact that you are likely (I hope so anyway) to stick with your team for years to come. They aren't going to win trophies every darn season.

I can take a loss. It is the manner of the loss that gets to me.

Doesn't take long unless some people want to rub some salt into the defeat...like Chelsea's win in FA Cup last year. I never had a partner that loves football, so, no idea.

well, you're not claiming to support clubs, just a national team. I think you can be a real fan, just a real fan of the England National Team. Think most forumers here are fans of clubs though.

usually, straight away as winning and losing are part of the game. However, if it's a particularly bad defeat (like on form but losing anyways) then it takes a little longer...

LOL, oh gosh, is there really a need to prove yourself as a real fan over the Internet? I'd be amazed if there's a definite period to feel sad over a result to be a real fan! Personally, depends on circumstances of the game and what I have in 'real' life as well lah. If I have a big exam/date/function to attend to, little time to cry over spilled milk.

Something's been bugging me for awhile now and I can't find a better thread to voice my thoughts on the matter.

Does anyone, in particular those of you who work listen to HitzFM in the morning? If you do, you often hear Rudy and JJ take call-ins from football fans after a weekend of matches. After listening to so many phoners I really have to ask if these 'fans' know anything? It doesn't matter if they are mancs, gunners or kopites, some of their comments give me the impression they are hollow. Today, you have a Liverpool fan going, "there are only two, teams, Man Utd and anyone else". What a load of crock! History would dictate that until Chelsea and Arsenal continue winning trophies, Man Utd AND Liverpool are the teams to topple. This coming from a Liverpool fan who I feel should be shot. You then have a lady manc going, "we'll be back". Where did you go? 1 season might feel like a loooooooooooong time to short sighted fans but hey, it isn't as though you've been relegated. Forget about today. I've heard mancs and Chelsea supporters asked to sing their song and all you hear is either Glory, glory Man Utd rpt or Chelsea, Chelsea rpt. At least bother to learn the rest of the lyrics lah. To Arsenal fans, sorry but I've not heard too many phone in smile.gif

Like I said, it doesn't matter which club they/you support but when you decide to 'represent' your club over the radio, please ensure you do so in a proper manner lah.

I just want to say that..at any point of a real fans before that he/she must be a new fans...so..when they are new...most of them..clueless about what the club...they need time..so dont judge new fans...hehehe

I comfortable by saying that i'm just one of the fans...

Being "new" or "fresh" does not make it an excuse that you do not know your club well.Take an example, I have two friends, both are Chelsea supporters. The female friend of mine only started to support Chelsea for 6 months know what is KTBFFH while the guy who start supporting since 1 year+++ ago does not know what is that.

The girl actually know more than the guy did.She knows the song, she knows the Jose Mourinho reign, who is Roman, the history of the club.

My point is they do need time to know more about the club they support but at the end of the day, initiative is the most important part of all.

Being a club's supporter is not just about basking in the club's glory, but to stay on the ship in a weathery storm as well. And knowing the history of your club is so much more important, if a player for yor club play for money and success, but not to honour the club's proud history and tradition, will you support him as much as a player who is also the club's supporters? There are many reasons being a supporter, the most common and i dare say ALL (if you do not come from the place your club is based) support their team because of their glory, be it past or present. But from there on, how far have you progressed in knowing your club's tradition, history and understanding how the club operates on and off field, is what a true fan should be all about.

I wore the same United jacket into the office today that I wear every single day to work. It's blue though.

Funny thing is, "Glory Glory Man United" is rarely sung at the stadium although that's the song most commonly associated to United. The likes of United Calypso, The Pride Of All Europe or player songs i.e. Giggsy's, Scholesy's or even Park's is more commonly sung.

Not having a go or anything but can't blame the "Chelsea, Chelsea". That's pretty much the only ever thing they sing anyways, even at the stadium.

Being a real fan is all about staying loyal to the club - thick and thin. In wealth and in our case, debt. To able to wear the football shirt proudly the following day even though we lost and got kicked out of some competition. To be able to withstand the tauntings in facebook and in real life. To be able to jump with open arms and scream from the top of your lungs and look like an idiot in the mamak when we score a crucial goal. To be able to recognize the club's history and know what it all means to the present. That for me makes up for a real fan, which sadly but not surprisingly lacked in our country.

idk whether i can relate hardcore fans with real fans or true fans..

for ex, anyone of you watched Green Street Hooligans aka GSE?(rivals between west ham and millwall) that is one example of a hardcore fan but in a way a true fan also..

on the topic,

1) knowing the history of your club is vital. its no use supporting the club if you dont even know their past achievements
2) Being on your side even during the sunny days and also the rainy days
3) willing to sacrifice your sleeping hours because champions league is up next thumbup.gif

being said that, there is no point in proving your loyalty towards your team over the internet. I always came across comments labeling a forumer glory hunter just because they dont agree with his opinion. no doubt there are some trolls giving people a hard time here but branding someone a GH just because you disagree with his opinion, is nonsense for me.

Mmm I actually heard the full version over the radio yesterday and aside from the chorus, it didn't really strike my fancy.

Speaking of 'lalangs', there was a guy who called up this morning and he was so happy Chelsea won it. When asked if he was a Chelsea supporter, he just said he was a casual football fan who like to watch winning teams so when asked if he was change to Man Utd if they won it next season, he just laughed. Dei, why don't any proper fans call up?
