Basically, you need to be there for your team, win or lose. Stick with your team whther they're at the tops or in the shits. Full of trophies or no trophies at all. Bandwagon jumpers i.e. glory hunters are definitely out of this list. However, this is Malaysia so bandwagon jumpers are a common theme here. That's why you see the sudden influx of Chelski 'fans' this past few years. Same as it was with Man United and Arsenal back in the 90's. I have a friend who was a Man United fan in 02, Real Madrid fan in 02-04 and a Chelski fan in 03-now. I mean I rather my club have less fans than have these kind of people.

This is my personal preference, but I rather watch my team play effective+sexy+attractive footy rather than win any trophies. At least they're entertaining the fans so we know that they're doing it for the fans.

Obviously you have to know about the history of the club. None of this "I never lived during the time, so I dont need to know about it". I mean, I came across so called Man united fans who asked what's the Munich tragedy is before,I mean what kind of bull question is that???Internet was created, google it.

And this is another personal thing. Anyone who supports more than 1 club should be shot in my opinion. My days on this forum, I came across people who are supporting Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool. How the hell can you support 3 team that are bitter rivals and are usually genuine contenders for titles is well beyond me. I can actually understand people who maybe support us and Barca or us and Real or us and Milan(although I still maintain they should be shot, haha) since they are clubs from 2 different leagues, but supporting 3 clubs out of the usual top 4??? That's just plain idiocy IMO.

I don't see needing to watch a certain percentage of games as a sign of true fan. Me personally, I never missed any United games be at whatever time it is. When it is not shown on TV I'll find ways to watch it. But who knows,we may have a Man United fan in Timbaktu who has no access to TV,who just happen to fall in love with the footie that the club plays while catching a glimpse of it on TV during a trip to town and make it a point to go some distance to check newspapers to find out results. There just might be these sort of fans.

Loving a football cluib is like loving a girl. When you love her/it, you want to know everything you can about it/her. Like verx said, how can you fall in love with something/someone that you don't know off?? That's more than lus than love. Lusting over trophies or a player probably?? Haha, I'm starting to sound like damn Dr. Phil.

Not trying to take the piss out of but I couldn't help it. A discussion about a real/true/proper fan and only one Chelski fan to be seen about. No pun intended to the likse of esca_flo and Kidscode as those who has supported the club a hell of long time though( I still hate you guys though, hahaha), to name a few.

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Apr 17 2007, 02:11 PM)
Well the positive thing is there has been a fair number of views, if not posts. It's ok not to post if you have nothing to say, just as long as you learn something from this. Fans in Malaysia are not as pressured to know about their clubs mainly because a huge majority don't. If you visit foreign forums though, it helps to know a little at least. If you actually visit Liverpool, Manchester or whatever, trust me, it's crucial to know something especially when you strike up a conversation with one of the locals. They will be apprehensive of course thinking you are one of those tourist type fans, but they will warm up to you when you show them you can hold your own.
*
No offence but if someone thinks that they have no need to know about their clubs because the majority don't, then they have no backbone IMO. I used the GF analogy because it reflects it perfectly. When you love your club, you want to know everything about it. If you like a girl and you want her to take you seriously, you'll go out of your way to know when's her birthday, what she likes et cetera. So, how do you expect fellow fans to take you seriously if you actually know jack about the club you supposedly care for and love?? As a Man United fan, I feel you're at least obligated to know about Newton Heath, Sir Matt Busby, The Busby Babes, Duncan Edwards, The Munich Disaster, Georgie Best, Bobby Charlton, Eric Cantona and the current and ongoing legend that is Sir Alex Ferguson. Just like Pool fans would want your fans to know at least about Shankly, Paisley, Hillsborough and Heysel.

Important event in your club. Learn it up. As verx(or was it Duke??) said again, Wikipedia has everything you need.

QUOTE
Do I label my housemate as a Man Utd fan? You be the judge, hesitating to switch clubs, from Man Utd to Chelsea...Shucks, sad isn't it?

I would say he's no Man United fan. A real/proper/hardcore/insert others here/ wouldn't even have the slightest inkling to abandon your club. Be it they're at the top or in the shits. That friend oof yours, should be shot. Would be shot I think if he's actually lived in the UK if he has that sort of principle. If you don't mind me asking, how old is your friend??? This switching club/glory hunting principle is most commonly found among kids anyways. If he's an adult, then as you said, sad, sad case...

I'm just wondering, just in case if one day, any of the top four team relegates. How many would still bother about their clubs?

Then he's just a very sad,sad person.

Will still follow them, regardless of what division of they are. Never ever crossed my mind to switch clubs.

Why and oh God why must you tempt me like this?? See, I can't resist having a go at them now.

Does anyone not see the irony of a Chelski fan on this thread agreeing with the fact that knowing history is 1 of the non important things???hahaha

I am a history teacher. But regarding this history thingy about the clubs, noone can deny the historical events of the EPL giants like MU, LFC, or Arsenal. But, what these clubs can't match The Blues nowadays is how we create a new histories for the past 5 or 6 years.
*
5 or 6 years?? No offence, but try 2 or 3 years.

QUOTE(Chrisky @ Apr 18 2007, 12:05 PM)
lol i cant help but to think this things started off bcoz of me.  biggrin.gif

actually my initial point previously was that knowing the history of the team is not necessary a 'requirement' or reason for u to fall in love wif something. juz like a GF, u most porbably didn't fall in love wif her juz bcoz u know her history. its some 'feeling' that most probably way beyond words can describe. so the point here is : u love something not bcoz of its history; n u know the history of it bcoz u love it. fair enough ?

anyway lets juz say that everyone hav their ways, n i respect all of them. ask a Romanista Ultra, n he'll tell u that u must paint ur house/room into orange/maroon, stick up pictures of Totti/Giannini/Pruzzo all over it, n might as well as beat the crap out of any Lazio fans if u happan to see 1.  biggrin.gif
*
I don't think anyone falls in love with the history. They fall in love with something, then they want to know the history. Slightly different there Chrisky. Hence the GF metaphore. Anyways, like you said, personal preferences. I still feel that knowing about the past and present of your club is a must though.

As for the ultra you're talking about, that just shows he's obssesed and passionate towards his club isn't it?? No harm in that in that really. Every fan (bandwagon jumpers i.e. glory hunters, stay away!!) should be passionate about their club but be reasonable as well. Hell, I am that obsess and passionate about my club that some fo my friends say I may just name my kid Wan Manchester United one day. Haha, Not a bad idea ain't it?? Butt seeing that he might just get his ass kicked at school for having a funny name I just may not do that. Haha.

C'mon Duke, join the dark side...you know you want to.

And what's with the praising C. Ronaldo on the PFA Player Of The Year thread?? As a pool fan, you're obligated to say Gerrard/Crouch/Alonso/Agger/Carragher is the best. Although credit to you for giving credit where credit is due.

You must be really hating yourself ehh?? Next we know you'll be singing Glory,Glory Man United. Haha.

I may be a Liverpool fan but I am also a football fan. As a football fan, I have to give credit where it's due. I understand fans are supposed to be biased but being deluded is quite another thing. Perhaps that's why they say Liverpool fans are the most knowledgeable  tongue.gif I hate you mancs with passion but I do respect you.

I'm not shy to show my allegiance if that's what you are getting it. Anyone can swap kits when they decide to jump onto another bandwagon. I derive extreme pleasure from displaying my loyalty especially to glory hunters biggrin.gif

*
Haha, that's the difference between us fans in Malaysia and those in UK. We love our clubs to bits but we'll give credit where credit is due. And we don't see the need to kill fellow fans or players over disagreement on club rivalry like that taxi driver you met on your trip there earlier this month.

As for your hatred and respect at the same time for us. Ditto man, that's all I gotta say.

Oh..and hell yeah. It's a great, great feeling showing my allegiances to my club towards glory hunters. I derive extreme pleasure at showing how proud I am of my club regardless of whatever position we are in to my friend, the former Man United and Real Madrid, currently a hardcore Chelski supporter, or so he claims. It's still gives me extreme pleasures now, it gave me extreme pleasures when he was a Rea; Madrid fan and it will always give me extreme pleasures I reckon.

I think fans in Europe do give credit where it's due as well. They aren't as crazy as ppl make them out to be. Off my head i remember Man Utd fans giving Ronaldo a standing ovation after he scored a hattrick at OT and Real Madrid fans doing the same after Ronaldinho single handedly demolished us at home.

But i do wonder if the Mancs would do the same if for instance Gerrard scored a hattrick in OT tongue.gif hmm.gif
*
I honestly don't think that will happen, considering the rivalry between the clubs. No would I think the Pool fans applauding Ronaldo and Rooney if they scored a hat-trick at Anfield. There's just too much hatred between the 2 clubs there.

With all due respect, Real Madrid aren't really our rivals are they?? And I don't mean that in a competitive sort of thing. You are a challengers to us in European football. We never had bad history together or anything. So I don't think we have problems applauding Ronaldo when he scored that hat-trick cause he undoubtedly deserved it. Although in recent developments I won't be surprised to see Mijatovic or Calderon getting the hell booed out of them if they come to OT.

QUOTE
Everyone is a real fan as long as they stick to their beloved team during the glory days and gloomy days.. What you do for your club is just a sign of love to the club. It is not necessary a means to measure how big a fan you are compared to others. About supporting more than one club.. hmmm.. Hard to say man... It's a debatable point as well..

Let me just put it this way. Say you support Manchester United and Real Madrid. Who will you support when the 2 meet in a European game? You claim to be a supporter of both teams, so how do you stay objective to one??? Any team will do,because both are my team???

No such thing. If you are real fan of a certain club, there shouldn't even be a slight hesitation on who you support when your team plays. Simple as that.

I'm not even going to start on people who support multiple clubs in the same league. That's just insane and plain idiocy and I'm going to use this overused statement again, they deserve to be shot.

To some (like myself), switching clubs is a cardinal sin. Like you say though, there are different degrees of fans. To me, it's more than a game. Liverpool to me, is a way of life. Sounds silly? Long story short, you can learn from the values the club preaches. Not being a fanatical supporter, you probably won't get what I mean but I just had to add my 2 cents to your comment about it being just a game, for entertainment. Also because I noticed you switched allegiances.
*
Not just a cardinal sin. I maybe going over the top but thos who switches club have no sense of loyalty and are a sorry excuse for a human being. They should be castrated and be relieved of their manhood.

How the hell can someone claim, proudly I might add that he is a fan of 2 clubs in the same league, I'll never understand. 2 very competitive clubs as well, highly regarded and has a very high chance of going for the same championship. We used to have some who proudly declares that he supports Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool at the same time. I think I saw one who supported Man United and Chelski before. Now we have one who proudly declares he supports Milan and Roma. Common sense will tell you who then do you support when any of these teams play each other?? Anyone will do?? Whichever team that wins is fine by you since you support both?? God knows I don't even condone people supporting 2 clubs from separate league, rest assured I'm against the idea, strongly I might add of someone supporting multiple clubs in the same league. These things, I'll never understand.

Fact of the matter remains that it's not just kids, we even have teens, even adults doing that.

I agree with Duke, air_mood and a few others, while we should ignore the golry hunters, it's their stupid statements that is both idiotic and funny that makes you wanting to shoot them and at the same time tell them that they are stupid, confused and should not open their mouth at all. It's hard to ignore when they go around spewing out "facts" and theory VERBATIM from the papers or internet, and have no opinion of their own, all these while acting as though they know a lot about their "team" that is what get me the most.

Oh yeah, funny that I don't aee Apis Lua Lua here? He is a REAL fan of 3 clubs after all...  whistling.gif

You know what pissed me off the most??? There was this one poster, bubucaca I think it was. He claims to support Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal. So I confronted him about it. His point of defence??

"Well at least I go to all their stadiums and buy all their merchandise."

I mean like, so the feck what?? If he does actually go to the stadium, I'm sure he's the one who knows feck all about the team, knows feck all what to sing. What a jackass.

yeah i know it wasn't me.. biggrin.gif the thing is why u flame him... he's just telling u what he feels.. for me the knowledge about football also important.. i don't think glory hunter issue was the main thing there. form what i understand, he's telling us that he admired Man U, i know him because he was the same Milan fans as myself here.. and what's wrong having 2 different clubs in 2 different countries. like me, i like Chelsea for epl and Milan for Serie A. He said that he like the was Arsenal play. like the way Man U manage his team and like Chelsea on the way they spent money flawlessly (some say).

it's hurting sometimes when we try to tell others how we admired something. Don't just flame for no reason.. ABout Roma and totti, and batistuta.. it's his Idol. Same as me here. always admired Giggs, Cantona from Man U but i am not saying that i banned Man U for life. i just say.. let's go on play on the field..let the score do the talking.. and enough of this crap already

peace thumbup.gif

I don't buy this 2 clubs thing, even if it's a separate country. You're spreading your chances, that is if one doesn't win, the other one might. And the point stands that what do you do then when the 2 clubs meet each other??? Whichever one wins is fine by you?? I don't buy that. Like many pointed out, you're merely spreading your chances for victory. Isn't that a form of glory hunting as well?? You're spreading your chances with multiple clubs with the hope that one wins. And to be frank, I could barely give a feck whether you ban MAn United or not. You chose to jump ship, then stay there. Nothing despises me more that people who choose when they like to jump ship especially when the ship they jump to is my club. Mere knowledge is one thing. It's the internet days, it's not hard to find info about a club. Googling is one, wiki is another which is why I don't understand that when the topic of knowing club's history came up, they were quite a few who said knowing history is not important. Call it having a go or anything but the quite the number of them is Chelski fans, throwing that the history being made is more important than what happened crap.

And like I said, knowledge about your club is one matter, loyalty is another matter. You support multiple clubs then if they do meet each other, you have your loyalty divided don't you??? I know some will say in front of club A fans that if A and B meets he will be behind club A all the way while vice versa in front of fans of club B. It shouldn't be an issue at all in the 1st place if oen has enough sense to stay loyal to a club and not spread chances.

As for that other guy, read back his posts, he says he like Milan and Roma and how "Roma is in his hearts". Admriing the style of play or a certain players is one thing, claiming to be a fan of multiple clubs is one thing.

You call it flaming, I call it knocking some sense into.

btw about these 2 clubs clashes? no worries. there will be no complications over anythings.. just watch the game and enjoy...and is this also wrong to support the local club? like it's 3 clubs now...OMG..i don't take football seriously as you guys. but i do love to see them play.. another player in another club is only the matter of something minor inside.. of course you want to dream to have kaka play with Henry. the fact is . they didn't come true... so sometimes when you read something about henry, there's always have some stories about Barca too... SUPPORT and ADMIRED.. 2 different words and 2 different form of meanings.. did u love to see those italian hooligans clashes again? more injuries implicated.. can also caused death... but this is football..play it with honor or play it with disgrace.. u choose..players come and go. so do fans.. if they don't like it.. it not a sin to leave the previous club and go to another
*
Sorry, don't buy this. If Chelski and Milan play each other and you arebacking neither, clearly you are nto a fan of both. Watch the game and enjoy??? Yes, people watch the game and enjoy and proper fans back their teams. Why do you think people sing and chant on their teams to lift their spirits??? because they love their team, But as you pointed out, just sit back and enjoy, it seems to me you're not really bothered who wins. Whichever one is fine seems to be the way to go. So basically, you're a fan of neither Chelski or Milan and as pointed out, you're spreading your chances.

And you're speaking incoherently here. What the feck does hooligans has to do with anything being discussed here?? And you're rambling about players and so on and nothing makes sense, just mere ramblings. You're not addressing the fact that by supporting 2 clubs, albeit in different leagues, you do have your support divided as pointed out by your reluctance to point out your support should the 2 clubs you claim you support meet each other, so you're neither a fan of Chelski nor Milan so I don't see why you should claim to be one. A Milan fan backs Milan for the win, a Chelski fan backs Chelski for the win but you're reluctant to show your allegiance to neither, sit back and enjoy you say. If that makes you a fan, then what are we ehh, the one backing the team thru thick and thin irregardless of how good or crap the team is performing.

And one more thing, you think it's not a sin to jump ships because well, you've been doing it for a fact. You're just covering your bases. As Duke pointed out go to Liverpool and tell them you're a Liverpool fan, formerly a Manchester United fan or go to Manchester and do it the other way around and see whether you get treated with respect. It's common sense.

One of my favourite question to suspected Man U glory hunters, I'll then tell them in a very nice way...
"It's Ron Atkinson aka Big Ron and Dave Sexton before that" then I'll add, "Oh by the way, your club is known as Newton Heath when it was formed before changing the name to Manchester United in 1902, due to Newton heath went bankrupt and almost had to close down for good." And I am a Liverpool fan!!!  doh.gif

I agree with air_mood on the history and knowledge thing, it's so easy these days, you find everything on wiki, spend like half an hour or an hour reading it and you'll know almost everything you need to know about YOUR club and more, how bloody hard is that? Sites like this., this or this are not hard to find and read, the fact that they wouldn't do it is beyond me  doh.gif

By the way, click on the thrid one and check out the site address, even wiki called them CHEKSKI!!!  whistling.gif
*
The fact remains that this is a forum full of schoolkids. Not really saying that it's a bad thing but you see too many of Liverpool fans going..."Ooohhh, Gerrard is the most awesomest player in the world...." or Man United fan going...." Ronaldo is clearly the best ever player to play football."..

They are more bothered with those kind of things than rationale or proper discussions, usually pointing one liners without nothing to back it up. i won't be suprised to find Man United fans here who doesn't know anything about Munich 58 or Pool fans who don't know about Heysel and Hillsborough.

True, that is what meself, Duke, Zypher, JonC, Maddie and a few other older fans trying to do, knock some sense into the younger fans so they appreciate everything about the club, it's been a slow process, but working nonetheless.

By the way, you guys doing anything for the Munich tribute?
*
There's hardly even a real active community of Man United fans in the country, as far as I know although I do know there's the clubhouse in SS2 though. Not really a fan of viewing party or anything of that sort as well considering i don't like to be disturbed when I watch my football. If there is anything happening somewhere it will be in that EPLPlus column on NST though. Seen nothing so far.

But I do find what the club is doing remembrance of the tragedy excellent though. The tribute they are doing in Manchester I mean. The retro kits, the big tribute on the East Stand. Big ass picture of the Busby Babed and the United Calypso on the side although I do find AIG stamping their logo on the tibute a bit out of taste though. Then there's the little bits of recognition like Rooney, Rio and Ronaldo asking for all blacks boots for the occasion instead of their usual flashy ones. Going to be an awesome day. Hopefully the blue bitters don't spoil it though. England don't trust their fans enough to pay tribute to the Busby Babes and called of a tribute that would have happened on 6th February, the exact day of the 50th anniversary of the disaster when coincidentally England will be having a friendly game.

For me, nothing better for a tribute to the Busby Babes than crushing the bitter blues with excellent football in the true fashion of the Busby Babes.
