Actually even only few cars allowed to unlap, it would have been ok IF they had told so from the beginning! Their only mistake was initially told that no cars will overlap then change it on the last minute. Mercs itself actually already anticipated earlier that MV will be right behind LH. Whether all or just a few allowed won't matter IF the intention like Masi said was to allow racing!
*
Race Director’s Evidence:

The race director stated that the purpose of article 48.12 was to remove those lapped cars that would “interfere” in the racing between the leaders and that in his view article 48.13 was the one that applied in this case.

The race director also stated that it had long been agreed by all the teams that where possible it was highly desirable for the race to end in a “green” condition (i.e. not under a Safety Car).

Conclusions of the Stewards:

The Stewards consider that the protest is admissible.

Having considered the various statements made by the parties the Stewards determine the following:

That article 15.3 allows the race director to control the use of the safety car, which in our determination includes its deployment and withdrawal.

That although Article 48.12 may not have been applied fully, in relation to the safety car returning to the pits at the end of the following lap, article 48.13 overrides that and once the message “Safety Car in this lap” has been displayed, it is mandatory to withdraw the safety car at the end of that lap.

That notwithstanding Mercedes’ request that the stewards remediate the matter by amending the classification to reflect the positions at the end of the penultimate lap, this is a step that the Stewards believe is effectively shortening the race retrospectively, and hence not appropriate.

Accordingly, the protest is dismissed. The protest deposit is not refunded

I am satisfied with the explanation, however I agree they should not have said lapped cars not allowed to overtake in the first place. Gave false hope to Mercedes, that being said, Horner and Verstappen sounded they accepted the reality of not winning up to then although good reaction by Redbull when the chance unfolded. Mercedes just started complaining when decision was changed.

understandable ppl got angry but i have to thank masi for letting me have a min and a half of excitement..

surely masi will be out of the job, so thank you masi! lol

I think FIA and F1 fans(not Mercedes fans though) like the excitement too. I thought it was a done deal, almost stopped watching after Kimi retired earlier.

His retirement became so low keyed due to the drama at the front! Lol Good that it's Kimi who doesn't care about much of anything!

All in all it has been a memorable great season, just like when Alonso finally toppled MS. MS was about to win the title also in Suzuka until his engine blew up, a miracle for Alonso.
*
Speaking of Alonso, not a bad return with a midfield team, still has good speed and his experience really shows.. Also great job by Davide Brivio in his debut season, a win and a 3rd place, not bad at all.

If Perez did not retired from the race, possible for Red Bull gets the WCC? According to Perez he was asked by his team to retired because the engine was on the limit and they don't want to interrupt MV's race, so sounds like precaution instead of real issue...

Another possible reason is they turned up the fuel to full lean to match LH during the defence and not expected to reach the end, boxed him to avoid unnecessary penalty.

Hopefully Toto Wolf and Lh get very hefty punishment for snubbing the mandatory ceremony. LH should be stripped of his knighthood for unsporting behaviour. Hahahaha..

I am happy enough if can already see 4 teams can consistently challenge for wins. Would be even better if the avg. qualifying gap from pole to last is less than 2 secs.
*
I'd be happy if all teams can finish within 30 secs in a race.

Waa that means race lap time avg. difference between winner and last is less than 1 sec per lap!  Even Indy cars cannot be that close.
*
Means everyone fighting till the end. OK 30 secs is near to impossible. 3-5 mins maybe acceptable.

Hugely overpaid for just a 1 time champ. But at 1 point Kimi was also the highest paid during his 1st stint at Ferrari.

Probably additional bonus in his contract clause.

Mazepin has officially been dropped. Honestly I think Hulkenberg is the best person to fill the seat but I don't think he has enough sponsorship backing to bring along.
