erm yeah. people ask me also where's my full-body shots.

i find the angle not nice la either that or i just sux at it (which most likely is the reason). smile.gif other reason is personal preference of disliking the crowd and the setting, of course arguable i could crop those out. biggrin.gif

i'm still trying to grasp fashion shoot, going again next week. hopefully can do better. this time i'll arm myself with larger capacity CF card as well.

tomorrow, see how la if i can make it.

EDITED : typo.

I mean cannot sit at the side bench and snap... either must go podium or side of the podium.

Goldfries,
Good shots but still need to tune up a lil' bit :
1. White Balance - Running lights and yellow spots are never an excuse, practice makes perfect. Get to know your camera.
2. Positioning - Try to get a spot as close as the center as you possibly can. Models down the runway a best shown walking straight towards you.
3. Handholding - All your shots are blur to begin with and sharpened by post processing, hold your camera steady.

thank you very much!!! first outing with my DSLR leh. smile.gif

white-balance issue, yes i've worked on it already based on the advice from shinchan / nairud earlier. i donno why that day for some strange reason i forgot about white-balance setting. today also first round i forgot, later only remember. gila wan after go DSLR + fashion show = all forgot. sweat.gif

as positioning, it was crowded so i tried other angles instead. today i've worked on that one already too, so better runway pics. biggrin.gif

and hand-holding issue, the ones on 2nd page were the more blur ones. i just put it up with sharpening, they weren't the best of the pick for that day. many of the shots were blur that day due to various issues. and yes, worked on it already. i'll upload my new pics later tonight. rclxm9.gif

anyway your feedback is much appreciated. later you come feedback on my newest pictures la. notworthy.gif sifu feedbacks are important.

nooob feedbacks such as myself brian? smile.gif u accept kA? smile.gif

i love your shots, i can't tell wehther u did post processing (like ac98 said)
but i like it coz it's clear.

however, this model, with the stripped black white shirt... i feel it needed some headroom. chopped off the head of hers. but oh does the strips stand out smile.gif yum...

also i do agree, i find it a bit too warm. too much orange in the skin tone. unatural, so to speak. but strangely, everytime i take shots, i'd do what u do, compensate the WB so that it shows more orange. looking at the little LCD screen on my d70s, i find it too dull, if it's not warm. looking at the pics from ac98, henrylow, shinchan and others, i find their shots not so warm, but it brings out the beauty in the skin tone (yet to learn that smile.gif )

Added on April 22, 2007, 12:06 ambtw, how to know a pic is too orange, i guess u could look at the white stripes on that model's shirt. it supposed to be WHITE, instead it looks orange.

thx. personally i didn't like head chop off as well.

the additional fashion shots (from 14th April) on this page were just some extras i'd like to show case. not exactly my favs. smile.gif

it's yellowish-tinge can be seen on the entire picture actually. no need white shirt - cos really, how do you even know the shirt has white stripes? smile.gif right?

post processing were done, if it enhances the shot i see no wrong of doing it. smile.gif it was a white-balance setting error for me.

being n00bie in fashion photography, i wasn't expecting my shots to get praises in the first place.

it was challenging for me as i was without flash, using zooms (a lot) and the a lot lighting variations.

the point of show-casing my fashion shoot is to gain precious feedbacks to improve my shots.

thank all of you. btw i'm also n00b dude, so relax. we're all here to learn.

anyway stay tuned, i'm in the midst of preparing my latest photoshoot.

EDITED : i've not went through all my pics today but so far i'm a bit disappointed. feels over-exposed. well back to the drawing board!!!

ac98, it was (for me) a shutter speed issue but later on manage to more or less solve the problem. biggrin.gif

i'm using 350D, Tamron 70-300mm tele lens, no flash and my intention was not just to capture the models and their apparels but also to attempt to capture the background.

this week lighting different. bumped up to 1/200. still i find it over-exposed. then in the end at 1/320. much better.

i tried even faster shutter speed then the model will look less bright but background become dim. well, at least that's what i saw as i test around.

i did the best to my ability. biggrin.gif i'm too tired to upload my photos now, later i upload already you guys comment on it la.

wink.gif i do hope you guys will find it to be an improvement. thank you very much. in need of expert guidance.

that also over-exposed ah? tongue.gif well yeah it is, over-exposed here and there but not as bad as those that i didn't upload. blush.gif

it was a much more challenging outing than the previous. icon_rolleyes.gif

1st the runway lights - i didn't have to care about this one earlier.
2nd - sunlight

so it was tricky for me, i wanted to capture the face, the apparel and the background too. laugh.gif

my settings were simple, ISO800, aperture f4, shutter 1/320. M mode leh.
EDITED : oh yeah. and NO FLASH. biggrin.gif nod.gif

while colored clothings and angles that reflect light to me tend to be exposed. sweat.gif

i only had limited time that day (5 sessions) and i had some really lousy failures as well but overall i learned quite some new things. biggrin.gif

as you can see the background and face were quite nicely capture (i think) and it's just some exposure thing that i need to work on. whistling.gif

goldfries, i realize one problem when shooting.. its that your setting is not suitable to be used with flash, or it'll be over exposed.. but there are so many flashing flashing from others.. sometimes the flash same time as you shoot, therefore.. over exposure.

i do have shots that hit same time with flash and i can assure you that my over-exposure was not due to flash from other people.

my setting was such that even the lightings at the runway is enough to cause over-exposure.

1. white-clothings
2. body angles that reflect lights
3. amount of zoom (i suppose)

notice that on other angles, distance and non-white clothings they shots look better.

I would say it is a very big step of improvement already.. yous shots are more vibrant and compositions are tight. The selection of subjects and the background blends very well here. And although some of the pictures were a little bit high-key, I don't see anything wrong with your series today.. rclxms.gif

EDIT: These models are damn & f*****g HOT!! icon_question.gif drool.gif

yeah. ISO settings too.

i used ISO 800 last week, so this week also used ISO 800. sad.gif didn't try ISO 400 though so i don't know if it'll be better.

the thing was that last week i used f5.6 and this week i used f4 and i didn't expect the results to be THAT drastic. as usual, on LCD it looks fine.

but yeah, getting to know the camera better now. it's a learning process. all in all i'm glad to see improvements in the shots. wink.gif

Let me tip you here ...

There are 3 Elements you need to remember for now - The ISO, the Aperture and the Shutter Speed :

1. The ISO setting basically controls how 'sensitive' the sensor/CCD : The higher the number, the stronger its sensitivity is to colour and light (consider it like it's your sex drive, haha!).

2. Shutter Speed, this one abit tricky : The faster the shutter plane closes the less light and colour have a chance to penetrate. By 'penetrate' I know you guys have lotsa ideas already, I will leave it at that for you to remember easier.

3. Aperture setting : Well, the bigger the opening the more light and colour can cum come inside, enough said. The smaller the number the bigger the opening.

The ROT (Rule of Thumb) is : The more light hits the sensor/CCD the brighter the image becomes, if you have a overeposure that means somewhere along the the line you either have too low a shutter speed, too wide an opening or too sensitive an ISO. How you can juggle between this 3 elements would depend on how well you handle your camera, there are no fixed settings for any kind of enviroment.

Hope that helps, happy shooting!:)

thank you ac98.

i've been using camera for quite a while and i've always kept those 3 stuff in mind biggrin.gif my problem was like what you mentioned - juggling between them, and also the error in misjudgement based on LCD output. <=-- seems to be my problem. darn.

i guess i haven't been snapping often enough to be a better judge, my photo-count for past 2 years i think less than 2k. tongue.gif

what other tips can you give me? biggrin.gif notworthy.gif

Never trust the LCD, do it like you would using film : You cannot see results, the PC's monitor should be your first result reference, hence you need to have a monitor that is very well tuned or else you'll be arguing how others see your pics and how YOU see your pics after post-processing.

notice some with yellowish tinge? they were NOT mistakes. after playing with the WB settings i decided to go with the yellowish tinge because that IS what i saw when i was there. thought of capturing as close to reality as possible.

the final 2 shots i set the WB to tungsten because i find it too yellow.

C&C are always welcome. hope you enjoyed the shots btw.

OK - i just had a trip to Awana Genting Highlands.

Here are some shots that I managed to snap, it wasn't a happening place as you all know, so what I did was to go around a bit and snap what I found interesting, or at least make something out of them.

The shots were mainly snapped from either my room, hotel lobby or the pool side. smile.gif I went there for a break, so don't expect me to go around that much. tongue.gif

now let's start off with some scenery objects.

And this shot, it that part of the Hibiscus. Pollen or something, I don't know.

Sorry la, the Hibiscus were snapped at a shaded area in the restaurant. So what I did was to experiment having the object vs darker background to see whether I can off-set the effect of the lack of lighting. (sorry if what i say doesn't make sense either)

most of the flowers shots are overexposed.

i'm not a pro macro shooter but i like to slightly underexposed my flower shots to retain the sharpness and details and readjust the level of the exposure in PP

yeah the thing is i'm not parellel with the petal. so the macro focusing will be off on certain areas. the only thing i didn't like about that shot was that it's pretty dim but i can't resist the flower at that area so i decided to make the best of what i can out of it. biggrin.gif

take a closer look, i personally don't find it over-exposed because most of the flowers are actually bright yellow on the upper layer. coupled with the darker background, it looks even brighter. some more snapped under noon's bright (and HOT) sunlight.

biggrin.gif if you look around the same type of flowers, you'll notice that some have a distinct gradient from bright yellow to red. some are purely orange, others are orange to red. blablablablalb - that's because there are so many of them, each having varying degree of coloration. biggrin.gif

You have definitely made the flowers look nicer than it should be... Great work man.
I guess I should be more sensitive to the surrounding when I go vacation. Never though a simple plant shot can be so beautiful. Two thumbs up man. Your overall composition is good.

Wah you need to be more specific right? You want the TS to have a shallower DOF or a deeper one?

You have definitely made the flowers look nicer than it should be... Great work man.
I guess I should be more sensitive to the surrounding when I go vacation. Never though a simple plant shot can be so beautiful. Two thumbs up man. Your overall composition is good.
*
thank you too. smile.gif yes, we should pay around to surroundings, even our own backyard. biggrin.gif for the trip, i made it a point to highlight all the things we often overlook.

the flowers are damn small man. some about 1cm, some 5mm. arrgghh.

as you can see, i didn't like the idea of flowers filling up most part of the picture, it was adjusted to follow Rule of Thirds.

hehe. doesn't matter. the DOF is limited by my lens. if i lower the aperture then the there's lesser bokeh effect already. not that nice also. smile.gif

I finally got to play with bokeh for once last Sunday. A new friend I made on that paddy field outing was kind enough to lend me his D80 and teach me how to use a DSLR and take bokeh shots. It was so cool! Man I wish I had a DSLR now.

wah eh you quoted the album that i find i did my worst la. tongue.gif

btw which shot you referring to?

yes, they're taken using Tamron 70-300mm. from what i gathered so far, the Sigma 70-300mm is better.

i only have 3 lens so far. 18-55 canon kit lens + 70-300mm tamron + 50mm f1.8 canon prime lens.

the 1U fashion show is 70-300m tamron normal mode. flowers, 70-300mm tamron on macro mode. midvalley fashion show is mix of 70-300mm tamron and 50mm f1.8 canon.

PIC #1
1/160, F5.6, 70mm, ISO800. WB auto (that's why yelllowish)

PIC #2
1/125, F5.6, 259mm, ISO800. WB auto (that's why yelllowish)

those pics resized then PP on sharpness a bit. IMO they're not as sharp as my other pics, after all those that you quoted are my 1st DSLR outing. biggrin.gif subsequent ones are better, and i rarely zoom at full 300mm because i use hand, no IS / VR / SR whatever you call those anti-shake tech.

the only time i always zoom 300mm is when shooting moon. that also not that clear on the moon's details (not telescope).

Thanks for sharing. I'm a newbie myself. Pic #2 thou only 1/125 @ 259mm, but for me, the pic is quiet sharp. Personally, i would prefer the Auto WB for the warm colour rather than the Tungsten WB which will turn the pic bluish (my taste lar).

arh ha! photographing is my favourite part. I'm a user of 5D. I shot mostly on landscape. Well, to decide if a photo is well exposed or not, you must always refer to the histrogram. Check www.dpreview.com for more info on photographing. I've been selling my photos at google and if you are interested go take a look.

yup. i was in the field.

this was my 2nd time shooting in the field.

first time was when a family from NY was playing. i got hit then but luckily those were house-markers (a.k.a. the gun given by the paintball company la)

so this trip was 2nd time, this time it's PRO players using guns that were more expensive than my camera + lens. and yeah i got a few hits. the blue-black on my thigh is still there. tongue.gif

the tricky part is you're using DSLR but you can't get close to view-finder cos you're wearing a mask.

the eye is easily 3 - 5 cm away from view-finder. you also have to understand the game and read the game to get good shots, and yeah, you have to learn to tolerate the pain. this part a bit creepy, i'm still learning to tolerate the pain. smile.gif

eh no joke man. some people kena before, hit by pellet on the lens and went through to the body!

i was advised to use at least 2 filters to take the impact of pellet on lens.

and since mine is not weather-sealed like EOS 1D and those L series lens, i use towel to cover my gear but sometimes still lose track of the towel la.

sorry didn't reply you. Yeah, a lot of attempts of course, that's where burst mode comes in handy!

anyway here's my new range of shots smile.gif I decided to walk around my father's garden and see what I could get out of it.

It's all about discovering the beauty of an otherwise normal setting. Day in, Day out. Park car, get into the house. Little time do we take to enjoy the minor beauty that's around us, such as this tiny garden (or lawn if you wish) around the porch area.

eh. #2, #3 and #6 no subject wan la, they're abstracts mah. biggrin.gif

see, ah,

#2 is a composition of lines.

#3 is like lines + circular patterns mixed

#6 is again lines, vertical, horizontal and diagonals combined.

nah, don't worry.

for #13, the flower was colored as it is, same goes to the leaves. biggrin.gif

for #14, the petal was bright pinkish while the leaves are light green and the wall at the background was beige of some sort.

they're now just how it looked like in real life.

@r4ydc24

I'm set for another paintball shoot in Dec. wink.gif

well, i'm trying to shoot pics of my nephew inside the house. so, at being young age, he's hyperactive. the problem is i keep getting blurred hands/legs because he moved too much. i tweak my Aperture and Shutter but I'll get either that (blurred hands/legs) or dark pics (because of EV at -2). Is there any thing else I need to tweak? My WB is auto so as my ISO.

oh..indoor pics is much different...maybe you could try putting your settings at :
-f5.6
-ISO800. Do not go up to 1600. only do so if really necessary
-maybe you could try about 1/150? but be sure to have enough light that is...

why do you need to set the EV to -2? that will only make it under exposed...

blink.gif is there such a thing? i think what you saw is the metering...not flash compensation...that meter is to tell you whether your pictures are properly exposed or not... Flash compensation will never move unless tweaked...

goliath, don't be afraid to push ISO up as high as you can. 1600 - 3200. also nmind la. whether the noise is acceptable is for you to decide.

assuming you're using DSLR, try Aperture priority mode with highest aperture available at highest ISO setting.

Yeap. I'm using 40D. I tell you, the weight is killing my shots.. Most of my shots are blurred because of the d*mn camera weight.

I'll try as you said.. smile.gif

Nope. Just the body and lens (F3.5-5.6 18-55mm) smile.gif

I think I can use it as my temporary dumbbell (if it comes with the grip) laugh.gif

i think my 350D + grip is heavier. biggrin.gif

ok here's the thing with the F3.5-5.6 18-55mm, once you zoom to 55mm range the aperture goes down to F5.6 and in order to compensate under-exposure you'll have to either raise the sensitivity (ISO) or lower the shutter speed or both.

that's why go for Aperture priority mode, set it to the highest ISO sensitivity (yours should be 3200) then adjust the EV meter to center.

then try snapping. if the light is terribly low then the noise would be more visible but you have to think la, you rather noise and decent picture or little noise but unusable pictures? smile.gif

if the setting works fine, try lower the sensitivity to ISO1600. you have to play around the settings to see what works best for your environment.

remember that your sensitivity setting and the aperture limitation will determine the shutter speed in the end. that's why people are always aiming for lens with higher aperture, such as the Tamron 17-50 f2.8

if you have a flash and shooting at long exp, i think you can make the stones a bit more exposed. hold the flash, not mounted on the camera. once in a while burst some flashes onto the stones. *altong's method*

next time you show me. biggrin.gif

this is just 1/2 of the entire picture cos the top part not so nice la, can see electric cable or something.

this bottom part was how it looked like on that day. smile.gif i always like my shots to look as it is.

btw my shots undergo only resize and sharpen after resize. no color adjustments. brightness and contrast for about +-5 photos only, that also minimal touches.

I read from somewhere that you should use some filter (forgot whether it's CPL or ND filter) to avoid the water stream from being blown, as can be seen from your photos.

My 2 cents la, I'm no expert. tongue.gif

Hey goldfries,

I got a noobie question for you, I hope you won't mind me asking.

How did you get the effect of the stream on picture 1, 2 and 4? Do you mount your cam on a tripod and let it go on a long shutter speed? Mind providing the info?

yup. i put on tripod and set it to slower shutter speed.

the water moves fast, so half a second or 1 second also can get nice streaming already.

you can check out the rest of the pictures (all 58) at my gallery. see any you like, you can PM me or ask here. smile.gif I'll be happy to share.

thank you. smile.gif to check out the rest of the pictures at by website. i can't post all here la. load too much. unless you guys want it all here then tell me la. just don't complain the loading time. biggrin.gif

and yes, a lot of my shots are taken with 350D kit lens and the Tamron 70-300mm biggrin.gif

yes, mostly snapped in ISO100 - 200 range. use lowest ISO and lowest aperture so that i can manipulate the shutter speed to get those effects.

OMG, is that Kepong Sentral? Looks awfully familiar as it's the station near my place! LOL

Great shots by the way, I'm still frustrated at the kind of results I'm getting with my 400D. I got a great camera but I can't shoot well enough. sad.gif

yeah it is Kepong Sentral. I can tell you which location I snap at. biggrin.gif

I was lucky that during that time the hot and bright sunlight caused a dramatic contrast between the areas exposed to the light and the areas in the shadows.

smile.gif just practise la. you'll get it eventually.

btw I've edited the earlier post with numbers for each pic.

#1, #2, #3 and #5 - 18-55 kit lens.
#4, #6, #7 and #8 - Tamron 70-300mm

direct link to gallery is here http://www.goldfries.com/inperson/mygaller...ipaintball&n=25

those photos were taken with PAIN. real pain, because paintball are flying all over the place. stand clear of their supposed target area also some how it still come at me. took quite a few hits, blue black. hit my mask, smear my camera. blablablbalbal

eh again, not easy ah snapping with the camera a distance away from your face. note that i have to wear facemask. smile.gif

C&C welcomed, make sure you quote the picture from the gallery (or here) if you want to know more details on the shot or would like to comment on it.

all shots were taken on Aperture Priority mode.

ahh. a few things la. i always like my shot to be 6x4 or 4x6 smile.gif

in this case, that's the best i can crop. leaving the hand is alright for me cos i wanted to show that the fella was in a human's embrace (or more like cekik here. tongue.gif)

brb i go try another cropping style for it. if nicer then I'll use your suggestion. biggrin.gif

for me, i noticed that the crowd is all too focused on dogs. i have nothing against dogs but for me, the attention on the dogs were so great that I decided to go for the lesser noticed things in the exhibition.

for example, how many actually noticed the marine tank? and Petster's Kibbles? smile.gif

sad. sad.gif probably distracted or something. this height, 4 legs and 9 lives won't save it. sometimes they do stupid things.

So now, here's the pictures from 2nd day.

Instead of posting all 45 new pics at once, I'll go by batches of 10 for lesser loading and better attention too.

pics removed for faster loading.

anyway, adding 10 more pictars

Thanks guys for all the good words!

Now, new set of pictures.

I was covering a swimming event on 18th July (Friday) and the participants were from Primary 1 to Primary 6.

So sorry la, don't expect Olympic quality swimmers. smile.gif These are just kids having fun, most of them jump into the water with tummy hitting the water straight on. tongue.gif

The participants are pretty much lack of swimming skills across the board. Getting a nice shot isn't easy as most of their strokes are either badly timed or just look like some desperate struggle just to get it over with.

Generally I don't have much ground to play with, it's all about spotting the better swimmer and hope to get a nice shot before it's beyond composition point. smile.gif

Anyway, here are my best for the day.

Great shot on #2. But it would've been better on a landscape so you see the boys arms. If I recall in swim shots, tighter angels are used on the breathe to create the intense feeling. smile.gif

yeah surely would've been better on landscape but everything is fast, his next surfacing and i would've lost the angle already so no choice but make best out of the scenario.
