AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- If you're the Detroit Pistons, now what do you do?

For the second game in a row, Detroit accomplished several of its strategic objectives and still lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers, this time 109-107 in double overtime on Thursday. The Pistons outrebounded Cleveland 45-39. They got great games from their All-Star guards, Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, and they did a better job of taking care of the ball, committing 13 turnovers in a 58-minute game. However -- thanks to the ridiculous superhuman efforts of LeBron James -- Detroit lost its third straight game in the series and is on the brink of elimination.

Maybe it's the old "best player on the floor" theory: The team with the best player is going to win (see Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan, Hakeem, Magic, etc.). LeBron was so incredible, so sublime, that perhaps Cleveland would have beaten any team in the league Thursday. But the Pistons have to feel deflated.

Even though Detroit was in the exact same position a year ago -- losing the middle three games of the series before winning the final two -- this is not the same thing. The Cavs are a better club than they were a year ago. They're really good defensively, and they're long and active. They play hard on every possession. They rebound at both ends of the floor. And ultimately, LeBron is more experienced and more confident with his game.

The Pistons are doing everything they can to keep LeBron in front of them, but even with his teammates struggling in Game 5, it didn't matter. James was phenomenal.

These Eastern Conference finals have been so close that it's easy to see either team winning it. But there's no question that Cleveland believes it can win, and that Detroit is starting to doubt itself. Even with a quick start and so many things going for them, the Pistons couldn't pull away from the Cavaliers. Detroit knows that, as long as LeBron is around in the fourth quarter, it's going to have a hard time winning.
