Race to the MVP - Overall Player Rankings
1. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
24.7 9.1 3.4 0.7 0.8 .499 .902
Last Week's Rank - 1
Nowitzki fired in 26 points Monday when the Mavericks knocked off the Clippers to clinch the NBA's best record. With nothing left to play for, coach Avery Johnson has decided to rest Dirk for Dallas' game against the Wolves on Wednesday.

2. Steve Nash, Phoenix
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
18.9 3.6 11.5 0.8 0.1 .534 .893
Last Week's Rank - 2
Nash has registered a career-best 50 double-doubles this season for the Suns, who have won five of their past six. The two-time MVP is averaging career highs in shooting percentage and assists.

3. Tim Duncan, San Antonio
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
20.1 10.6 3.4 0.8 2.4 .542 .640
Last Week's Rank - 6
It will be interesting to see if Duncan's Spurs (56-21) can catch Nash's Suns (58-19) for the second seed in the West. He had one of his best games of the season against the Warriors on Saturday, posting 28 points and 15 rebounds.

4. Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
31.2 5.6 5.5 1.4 0.5 .459 .866
Last Week's Rank - 3
The losses continue to pile up for Kobe's bunch, who have dropped six of their past eight. Bryant connected on just nine of 30 attempts in Monday's loss to the Nuggets. L.A. (40-38) has fallen to seventh in the Western Conference.

5. LeBron James, Cleveland
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
27.5 6.8 6.0 1.6 0.7 .474 .703
Last Week's Rank - 4
Last week James became the second fastest player to reach 8,000 points, 2,000 rebounds and 2,000 assists. LBJ accomplished the feat in 311 games, while it took Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson 269.

6. Tracy McGrady, Houston
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
24.3 5.2 6.4 1.2 0.5 .429 .704
Last Week's Rank - 5
After missing a game because of a sore lower back, McGrady erupted for 40 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds against the Kings on Sunday and followed that up by tallying 27, five and five against the Sonics on Monday night.

7. Chris Bosh, Toronto
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
22.7 10.7 2.4 0.6 1.3 .498 .780
Last Week's Rank - 7
Bosh, who has scored in double digits in every game this season, has led Toronto to four straight wins. Last week the Raptors captured the Atlantic Division title for the first time and last month they wrapped up a playoff berth for the first time in five years.

8. Gilbert Arenas, Washington
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
28.5 4.6 6.0 1.9 0.2 .418 .844
Last Week's Rank - 8
Arenas had season-ending surgery Thursday on the knee he injured last Wednesday against the Bobcats. Agent Zero and King James are the only players in the league with three consecutive seasons of 2,000 or more points.

9. Chauncey Billups, Detroit
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
17.2 3.4 7.2 1.2 0.3 .425 .882
Last Week's Rank - 10
The Pistons, who are the only team in the Eastern Conference to win 50 games so far this season, have a starting unit full of players that could possibly crack this list. Billups gets the nod because of his ability to make plays in the clutch.

10. Carmelo Anthony, Denver
PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% FT%
29.0 6.1 3.9 1.2 0.3 .476 .803
Last Week's Rank - 13
With Anthony, everybody pays attention to his scoring but this season he is averaging a career high in assists and has tied his career highs in rebounds and steals for the Nuggets, who are the hottest team in the league right now.

If not.... I think they can't reach the playoff.

Added on April 13, 2007, 6:45 pmThe Rebirth of the Raptors rclxm9.gif
The Toronto Raptors are headed to the playoffs for the first time in five years.
Who knew?

The 2006-07 Atlantic Division champions are, for the first time, the Toronto Raptors.
Who knew?

The Toronto Raptors have as good of a chance as any team in the Eastern Conference to advance to The Finals this year.
Who knew?

President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo did. And after what they have done this season, the rest of the league now knows, too.

Colangelo had a plan, and it has worked to perfection. He knew exactly what needed to be changed with the Raptors and was the one person who saw something that no one else could. He didn't hesitate to take on the challenge.

After 15 successful years with the Suns, Colangelo was hired by the Raptors in February of 2006. Just two seasons after being awarded the 2005 Sporting News Executive of the Year for engineering the third-greatest turnaround in NBA history when the Suns went from 29-53 to 62-20, Colangelo is up to his old tricks again in Toronto.

In a shorter amount of time, he has revived the team by keeping just six players from last season, transforming the Raptors to an up-tempo offense with international flair.

"Bryan Colangelo is one of the very best in the business," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "He's got great experience. Once they got him away from Phoenix I think that sent a message to the players that they were serious about things."

The savvy GM made four trades, acquiring point guard T.J. Ford from Milwaukee, forward Kris Humphries from Utah, center Rasho Nesterovic from San Antonio and, at the trading deadline, guard Juan Dixon from Portland. He also signed two free agents from Europe, forward Jorge Garbajosa and guard Anthony Parker, and made Andrea Bargnani the first European player selected with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

The transactions may not have sounded like much at the time, but those moves were essential to the Raptors' current success. With just one season under his belt and a great deal of salary cap room, one has to think that their future could to be even brighter.

Even though Colangelo is credited as the mastermind that assembled the team, head coach Sam Mitchell has managed to keep the team focused and driven throughout the season.

He was named the sixth head coach in Raptors franchise history on June 29, 2004. However, success was not immediate in his first two seasons; Toronto finished with a 33-49 record during the 2004-05 season and went 27-55 in 2005-06.

But Mitchell began laying the foundation of a more up-tempo style of play that has meshed seamlessly with the fun-and-run style Colangelo brought with him from Phoenix.

Of course it helps when you have an emerging superstar and All-Star forward, Chris Bosh, and a lightening-quick point guard, Ford, keeping the team's engine running at full throttle.

In just four seasons, Bosh has gone from the fourth pick in the 2003 NBA Draft to a franchise player to a starter in the NBA All-Star Game.

He is posting career highs with 22.8 points and 10.7 rebounds, and his play this season even has fans campaigning for him to win this year's MVP award.

"That's one of my goals that I want to attain in my career," Bosh said. "I know I have a long way to go."

He and Ford, who is also averaging career bests of 14.1 points and 7.9 assists, have helped rid the franchise of the negative mentality that seemed to linger over Air Canada Centre in recent years. But most importantly, they are sharing the ball and winning games.

"Last year we probably would get down by 20 and put our heads down and that's a wrap," Bosh said. "That's the thing I like about this team. We keep our eyes on the prize. He (Ford) came to me and I came to him and we were like, 'Look, as we go, the team goes and we have to take on that type of attitude.'"

The duo has taken the team from a 2-8 start to its current 45-33 record.

Nevertheless, two men do not make a team.

Bargnani has been compared to MVP candidate Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. He is a good scorer and has accuracy from long range. Before undergoing an appendectomy on March 21, 2007, he was scoring at an 11.5 points per game clip.

Garbajosa, a Spanish Cup Finals MVP for two consecutive years, signed as a free agent last July. He also led Unicaja to the Spanish ACB regular-season championship and helped lead Spain to the 2006 FIBA World Championship along with current Raptor teammate, Jose Calderon. Garbajosa was averaging 8.5 ppg and 4.9 rpg when he suffered a displaced left ankle and fractured fibula on March 27, 2007.

Despite being injured, Bargnani and Garbajosa, who were selected to the 2007 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend, are both in the running for Rookie of the Year award.

Parker, a two-time Euroleague MVP, has won five Israeli Premier League championships, five Israeli Cups and three Euroleague titles and has had stints with the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic. As a Raptor, he brings a winning attitude and one of the league's most accurate 3-point shooting touches -- he ranks sixth in the league at 43.6 percent.

Nesterovic brings championship experience from his days as a member of the 2005 San Antonio Spurs.

Collectively, the aforementioned group, along with Calderon, Dixon, Humphries, Morris Peterson, Joey Graham, Darrick Martin, Pape Sow, Uros Slokar and Luke Jackson, have led the Raptors' revival.
But who knew?

PLAYER OF 50 POINTS
A player scoring 50 points almost seems like a regular occurrence now. Afterall, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has reached the half-century mark nine times this season after finishing with 50 on 17-of-33 shooting from the field in a 118-110 loss to the Clippers on Thursday.

Bryant ties Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain, who also scored at least 50 nine times in the 1964-65 season, for the most such games in a single season.

Bryant is one of six players this season to rack up at least 50 points, a feat also accomplished by Jamal Crawford, Gilbert Arenas, Michael Redd, Ray Allen and Richard Hamilton.

Overall, there have been 14 performances of at least 50 points this season, two more than the entire 2005-06 campaign. There were only eight 50-point efforts in 2004-05 and five in 2003-04.

PLAYER POINTS DATE/OPPONENT
Kobe Bryant 65 3/16/2007 LAL vs. POR (OT)
Gilbert Arenas 60 12/17/2006 WAS at LAL (OT)
Kobe Bryant 58 12/29/2006 LAL at CHA (3 OT)
Michael Redd 57 11/11/2006 MIL vs. UTA
Gilbert Arenas 54 12/22/2006 WAS at PHO (OT)
Ray Allen 54 01/12/2007 SEA vs. UTA (OT)
Kobe Bryant 53 12/15/2006 LAL vs. HOU (2 OT)
Michael Redd 52 3/4/2007 MIL vs. CHI (OT)
Jamal Crawford 52 01/26/2007 NYK vs. MIA
Kobe Bryant 52 11/30/2006 LAL vs. UTA
Richard Hamilton 51 12/27/2006 DET at NY (3 OT)
Gilbert Arenas 51 01/15/2007 WAS vs. UTA
Kobe Bryant 50 03/18/2007 LAL vs. MIN
Kobe Bryant 50 04/12/2007 LAL vs. LAC

Wah Kobe is the one who score a lot of 50 points or more than 50 points.notworthy.gif

Added on April 14, 2007, 9:18 pmRace to Coach of the Year
1. Jeff Van Gundy, Houston
Record (as of April 12): 50-29
Last Season's Record: 34-48
Improvement: +16
Van Gundy has steered the Rockets to the fourth-best record in the West with Yao Ming out for 33 games and Tracy McGrady out for 11 games with injuries. Houston fans expected results this season after an underwhelming 2005-06 campaign and Van Gundy delivered, even with the Bonzi Wells situation hanging over the team. JVG successfully integrated free agent Shane Battier into the mix and had the foresight to rely heavily on unheralded second-year forward Chuck Hayes. Van Gundy got his team to beat the teams they were supposed to beat for the most part and to perform consistently on the road -- their 24 road wins are fifth most in the league.

2. Avery Johnson, Dallas
Record (as of April 12): 65-13
Last Season's Record: 60-22
Improvement: +5
If the Mavericks win out, their 69-13 record will be tied with the '71-72 Lakers and the '96-97 Bulls for the second-best regular season mark of all time. Hard to argue with that. But even so, that would be a nine-game improvement since last year, as opposed to the Rockets' potential for a nineteen-game improvement if they win out. Give Avery Johnson a ton of credit for augmenting his team's mental toughness. After their 0-4 tailspin they went into after being up 2-0 in The Finals, the hangover carried over into this season when Dallas started off 0-4, but Johnson and his squad reeled of win streaks of 12, 13 and 17 games (not to mention eight and nine game ones as well). Johnson won the Coach of the Year last season, his first full campaign as the head honcho in Dallas after taking over for Don Nelson. Although he is close this year, I don't think Johnson is worthy of becoming the first-ever back-to-back Coach of the Year winner with the season Van Gundy has had.

3. Sam Mitchell, Raptors
Record (as of April 12): 45-33
Last Season's Record: 27-55
Improvement: +18
The Toronto Raptors are Atlantic Division Champions for the first time in franchise history. Who would have thunk? Sam Mitchell had two pair in his hand last year and was handed a full house in the offseason thanks to all of the moves completed by General Manager Bryan Colangelo. But it was Mitchell who still had to play his cards right. With only six holdovers from last season's roster, Mitchell was charged with integrating a bevy of new players into his rotation and at the same time develop a No. 1 pick while all the time making sure not to hinder Chris Bosh's flourishing career. He completed the balancing act and if Toronto wins out it can finish an amazing 22 games above last season's record. Take out the Raptors' 2-8 start and Mitchell had his club playing .632 ball the rest of the way.

4. Jerry Sloan, Utah
Record (as of April 12): 48-30
Last Season's Record: 41-41
Improvement: +7
Jerry Sloan has just one losing season in 19 years at the helm in Utah, an amazing feat, but the Coach of the Year isn't a lifetime achievement award. Sloan should be credited for his work during the offseason and in training camp to get his team to shoot out to a 12-1 start. The former Chicago Bulls defensive great stuck to his guns and ran the same Jazz sets with Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams that he used to run with Karl Malone and John Stockton. Sloan dealt with injuries to Andrei Kirilenko, Utah's focal point in '05-06, and plugged in rookie Paul Millsap in his stead. However, the Jazz are just 1-6 over their last seven games -- not a sign of a coach getting his team to build up momentum heading into the playoffs.

5. Scott Skiles, Chicago
Record (as of April 12): 47-32
Last Season's Record: 41-41
Improvement: +6
Maybe I'm a sucker for turn arounds, but I'm convinced that it is infinitely harder to get a team to believe in itself when it starts the season off 3-9 than when it starts off 9-3. Skiles' Bulls stumbled out of the gates, but by preaching aggressive defense (Chicago's 94.1 points per game allowed is sixth best in the league) the former point guard was able to guide his team to the top of the East. Skiles greatest achievement with this squad is how he shaped the group into a true team with Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng, Ben Gordon and Ben Wallace all having truly defined roles.

Of course he is hotlah, if not how come he can be an MVP?
Here are my top five candidates for the Defensive Player of the Year:
1. Marcus Camby, Denver
SPG - 1.3
BPG - 3.2
D RPG - 9.4
The numbers speak for themselves as Camby is second to only Kevin Garnett (who is on his way to his fourth-consecutive rebounding title) in defensive boards per game and nobody averages more swats per game than the 11-year center's 3.2. But Camby's greatest asset is his mobility. Most 6-11 players and plod up and down the court, not Camby. He covers ground like a gazelle. The Nuggets are 14-8 this season when Camby has two-plus steals and they are 26-13 when he has three-plus blocks. Camby recorded seven blocks in a game nine times this year, and twice he did it in back-to-back games (four wins against the Knicks and Wizards in December and the Lakers and Jazz in April). More importantly, Camby is able to get up and down the court on one of the league's most potent offenses (fourth in the NBA with a 105.2 ppg average) and still have the energy to make plays on defense. Camby made the Second Team All-Defense the last two seasons and it's about time he gets his proper due.

2. Shawn Marion, Phoenix
SPG - 1.9
BPG - 1.5
D RPG - 7.8
I had Marion as my mid-season DPOY pick and I struggled with giving Camby the nod because Marion really does check everybody from guards to centers for the Suns. I even started off a column highlighting his D. But, unlike Camby who is the lone lockdown defender on Denver, the Matrix has a partner in crime in Raja Bell taking turns going against the opponent's strongest offensive force. Marion is your do-everything guy. He is a higher-performing hybrid than Larry David's car. This was like splitting hairs, but Camby wins by the smallest of margins.

3. Tim Duncan, Spurs
SPG - 0.8
BPG - 2.4
D RPG - 7.9
San Antonio allows a league-low 89.8 points per game on the defensive end and the man that sets the tone is Tim Duncan. Duncan has made the All-Defensive Team nine straight years (six times on the first team, three on the second) but his defensive numbers are actually down across the board compared to last year. Duncan is a key component on a defensive-minded team, but he benefits from playing with savvy defenders such as Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili on his side.

4. Gerald Wallace, Charlotte
SPG - 2.0
BPG - 1.0
D RPG - 5.2
Known by casual fans as a fantasy basketball stud, Gerald Wallace is another example of the new-wave defender. At 6-7, 215 pounds, Wallace can match up with a power forward or a point guard. Wallace's fingerprints were all over the boxscore on March 28 in a win against the Hawks, as he collected four steals, four blocks and eight defensive rebounds. The Bobcats rely on him to be their top offensive option (leads the team with 18.2 ppg) but that doesn't deter him from making an impact on the defensive end. He even draws charges.

5. Caron Butler, Washington
SPG - 2.1
BPG - 0.3
D RPG - 5.1
Butler's 2.1 steals per game average is second in the league, behind only 2003-04 Defensive Player of the Year Ron Artest, but what Caron brought to the Wizards before going out with a broken hand was about more than stats. Coach Eddie Jordan nicknamed him "Tough Juice" because amidst a team of jokers like Gilbert Arenas and DeShawn Stevenson, Butler seemed to have something special in his Gatorade to get him to play with such intensity. Butler fits the Marion/G-Wall mold at 6-7, 228 pounds, allowing him to D up on the wing or the post.

How about u all, let's talk about it.
