Garnett, Celtics Beat Raptors

Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 16 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Boston ruined Andrea Bargnani's homecoming with an 89-85 preseason victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

Paul Pierce added 21 points for Boston, while Ray Allen had an off night with only 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting.

The start of the NBA Europe Live tour marked the Celtics' first game since Garnett and Allen joined the team, creating a "Big 3'' with Boston veteran Pierce.

"It was good to finally get out there and get our feet wet,'' Pierce said. "It was probably the best first game since I've been with the Celtics.''

Coach Doc Rivers left both Pierce and Garnett in for 32 minutes, while Allen played 31.

Yi scores 10 points, grabs 5 rebounds during Bucks scrimmage at Bradley Center

Yi Jianlian had 10 points and five rebounds, and threw in a halfcourt shot Saturday during the Milwaukee Bucks' open scrimmage at the Bradley Center.

Three days after arriving from Shanghai, the Bucks' first-round pick from China also blocked a shot in 25 minutes before 7,109 fans.

Yi was the main focus of the scrimmage for the fans, who cheered him loudly when he was introduced before the practice and then chanted his name after he scored seven points in the fourth quarter. He also hit from midcourt during a fan contest after the third quarter, earning a standing ovation.

"I heard my name while I was on the court and I was excited for the atmosphere of the game," Yi said through an interpreter. "It was a good start to get ready for the season."

Kenyon Martin Making Strides, Plays Five-On-Five

Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin took his biggest step yet Friday as he recovers from microfracture surgery on his right knee in November. For the first time since the surgery, he played five-on-five.

"He was jumping, dunking," center Marcus Camby said of the training camp scrimmage. "If you didn't know he had surgery, you wouldn't think anything was wrong with him."

Martin had been playing three-on-three and four-on-four before he was cleared Friday.

"It was cool," he said. "I'm just doing more each day...I'm just doing all I can right now. I'm feeling good."

Kobe Rests Sore Knee; Walton Sits As Well

Kobe Bryant and Luke Walton sat out the Lakers' morning workout Saturday as they recovered from minor injuries.

Bryant rested a sore right knee, while Walton has a strained right hamstring. Coach Phil Jackson said he expected Bryant to participate in the evening practice, but Walton, Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown would not.

"Some of it's preventative, some of it's the two-a-days and the attrition from it," Jackson said.

Walton said he felt a "tug" while running during practice Friday. He expects to return to workouts as early as Monday.

"It's just one of those things where it's only going to be a couple days, but you just can't rush it because it could turn into something a lot worse," he said.

Turiaf, Not Walton, May Start Lakers' Season Opener

At the end of a routine day, Lakers coach Phil Jackson caused a minor stir by saying he was considering starting forward Ronny Turiaf ahead of Luke Walton when the season begins Oct. 30.

It had nothing to do with Walton's strained right hamstring, which prevented him from practicing Friday. It had everything to do with Jackson's desire to add Turiaf's energy to the starting five.

"We'll see how it goes," Jackson said. "It's still a long time away from tip time, but I know we have to have starters coming off the bench to be a good team."

Just finished watching the 1st quarter of the Celtics vs Raptors game and i think the Celtics' trio are still too fresh with each other. They lack chemistry and most of the time they are just playing the pick n roll.

Defense vise, they are pretty good in the paint but somehow they are letting the opponent wide open for some serious perimeter shooting. Against a team like Raptors, you would never wanna let any of the players be unguarded.

After watching the full game of the Celtics vs the Raptors, i am very surprised how serious both teams are and they have all given their full attention to the game despite it is a mere pre-season matchup.

Kevin Garnett i think took the most attention out of it. Now i understands why he is called as the most passionate basketballer.

Curry Out Two Weeks

An MRI revealed Knick center Eddy Curry has a torn labrum in his right shoulder, and the team indicated he'll be out about two weeks.

"I think it's definitely good news," Curry said at the morning shoot-around. "Going in, we were just hoping the rotator cuff was healthy. It was. It was unharmed, so it's definitely good news."

Pistons Top Heat In Exhibition Opener

Tayshaun Prince scored 13 points and Chauncey Billups added 12 to help the Detroit Pistons beat the undermanned Miami Heat 103-86 in the exhibition opener Monday night.

The Heat were missing Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade and Alonzo Mourning, who all stayed in Florida to deal with injuries. Udonis Haslem and Antoine Walker spent the night on the bench.

Detroit had its regular lineup, other than unsigned Chris Webber, and dominated from beginning to end.

Lewis' Debut With Magic Cut Short By Cramps

Rashard Lewis left the Orlando Magic 's preseason game Monday night with cramps.

Lewis hit the ground and couldn't make it down the court in the third quarter. The Magic called a timeout and pulled him, but Lewis remained on the bench.

Stern Considers NBA Regular-Season Games In Europe

The NBA is staging another successful preseason tour in Europe. Regular-season games on the continent are the next step.

"I think that time is coming closer," NBA commissioner David Stern said Sunday at halftime of the Toronto Raptors win over Virtus Lottomatica Roma. "That has historically been a matter of euros. It costs many euros to buy a game from a regular season because our teams do so well.

"But with the new O2 Arena in London, with the new arena in Berlin, with the proposed arena in Rome, Europe is beginning to develop buildings that look much like the ones that we have in the United States, and those buildings will yield more revenue for such a game."

Anthony Carter To Have Surgery On Hand

The Denver Nuggets announced that guard Anthony Carter will undergo surgery on his fractured right hand Wednesday.

Carter suffered the injury during practice on Saturday. He will have screws inserted into his fractured third metacarpal to repair the break and expedite the healing process.

Carter averaged 3.0 points, 5.5 assists and 1.5 rebounds in two games for the Nuggets last season. He appeared in one playoff game, scoring eight points and handing out two assists in 14 minutes.

Sore Mihm Sits Out

Chris Mihm, still not quite right on his surgically repaired right ankle, didn't practice Sunday.

Mihm said there was some irritation and he didn't want to push things.

"The biggest test is getting through double days," Mihm said. "Hopefully, with the day off, my body will respond. I'll be good for Monday's practice."

Small forward duty in Odom's future

Days after Phil Jackson revealed to the media his plan to start Ronny Turiaf instead of Luke Walton, the Lakers' coach could be seen scanning printouts of Lakers stories from the Internet after the team's Saturday morning practice.

Jackson said it was "important" to read his players' reaction to the idea and that the reaction "seems OK." He then added: "Compliance is what I'm looking for."

Besides the firecracker-lit Turiaf and the reluctantly cooperative Walton, the player directly affected by such a move is Lamar Odom, who would shift from power forward to small forward to start games. Jackson said that would change things for Odom "a lot."

"We know what his strengths are," Jackson said. "He's a great open-floor player. He gets a lot of offensive rebounds. So it'll really enhance a lot of what he can do because of that. I think we have to make sure that we understand that."

After two years of shaky execution with Odom playing a lot of guard and Kobe Bryant playing more small forward, Jackson intends to limit Odom's ball-handling responsibilities this season and have Bryant direct the triangle offense more. At small forward - or the Michael Jordan wing position in the triangle - Odom would have greater freedom to create and attack as he wishes.

"That's the position I came into the league playing," Odom said of small forward, "and is probably more of my natural position."

Odom envisions doing most of his damage by using his 6-foot-10 frame to post up opposing small forwards, saying: "Most small forwards don't like to play post defense."

Milwaukee Mayor declares Oct. 7 "Yi Jianlian Day"

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barret yesterday declared Oct. 7 'Yi Jianlian Day' to the loud applause of the Chinese basketball player's fans.

This is the second festival named after a Chinese basketball player following Houston's announcement in 2002 that Dec. 11 is 'Yao Ming Day.'

Yi's fans held a reception at Bradley Center yesterday, attended by more than 500 fans and VIPs including Senator Herb Kohl, who owns Yi's new team the Milwaukee Bucks, Mayor Tom Barret and Huang Ping, the Consul General of China in Chicago.

Yi, Milwaukee's top draft pick this year, signed a multi-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks in August after lengthy negotiations amid talk he and his handlers weren't happy he was taken by the team.

His U.S. agent Dan Fegan said Yi's contract was worth "roughly 3 million U.S. dollars" a year, guaranteed for the first two years pursuant to an NBA collective bargaining arrangement for rookies.

Bosh Slowed By Knee Injury

A sore knee kept Chris Bosh out of Raptors practice Tuesday morning, the Toronto Star is reporting.

Team officials said Bosh "tweaked" his left knee during a practice last week in Treviso, Italy. Bosh is being listed as day-to-day.

"I have to rest it," Bosh said Tuesday. "I would like to practice but I have to think about the big picture."

Bosh, who couldn't remember when he banged his knee in practice in Treviso, also isn't sure he'll be able to play in Thursday's game here against Real Madrid.

"I could play but I have to take into account it's the pre-season. No disrespect to the teams we're playing but it is the pre-season."

Stupid list, they have Minnesota on top of Seattle, and Memphis Grizzlies so high up. Any regulars that watches the NBA will disagree with that list
