Dear All,
I am new to SSD, plan to purchase a 240GB or 256GB SSD drive for my PC just for OS and program. Can i know what should i aware when choosing a SSD ? Budget really limit and as cheap as possible. So far the cheapest i saw in Low Yat is Transcend 220 Series ... any feedback on this brand and model ? This post has been edited by dragonteoh: Feb 26 2018, 10:06 AM |

QUOTE(dragonteoh @ Feb 26 2018, 10:04 AM) Dear All, the rule of thumb for ssd purchase is always, 'you get what you pay for'. a good ssd is worth the price, and it will last for a long time. common brands with better quality controls are intel, samsung, crucial, sandisk (and maybe western digital), kingston. for ssds with tlc nand, choose those with 3d-nand.I am new to SSD, plan to purchase a 240GB or 256GB SSD drive for my PC just for OS and program. QUOTE(dragonteoh @ Feb 26 2018, 10:59 AM) you're welcome. these days we have many choices for consumer ssds. for sata-based options, we have entry-level, mainstream, and performance grades. for pcie-based options, we have mainstream and performance grades. personally, i suggest skipping entry-level sata ssds which use planar tlc if possible, unless you're sure that their general performance, reliability and endurance are acceptable for your usage. if you intended to reuse them in new systems later on, then it's better to get at least mainstream options. also, get new models if possible. the main reason for this is the recent change of warranty policies for some brands. for instance, 860 evo has much higher tbw warranty than 850 evo. i know budget is a concern. however if price gap is acceptable, i really suggest you top up and get better ones. |

QUOTE(pcdsb @ Feb 26 2018, 05:27 PM) a final boost to an old system? imo you should get something mainstream, so that you can reuse it later when a new system arrives.i'm not familiar with entry-level sata ssds because they were not good enough for my usage (serious drop of performance, which is slower than hdd, when they run out of cache) |
