Few thing comes into my mind:

You will have limited option when it comes to BCD rental (Cannot pick best condition among the worse) as they have less XL? sized BCD compared to L and so on.

Same goes to wet suit rental, cannot pick the wetsuit that has less torn/hole.

Need to carry more weight in order to sink, which makes you work harder to "move" underwater, hence less time underwater (consume more oxygen). Normally should not be an issue for OW, just less "play" time while doing first few OW test, assuming you manage to pass the assessment without multiple attempt.

May need more practice taking off and wearing BCD on water (part of the test).

And depends on your body metabolism (someone with larger body mass may consume more oxygen), passing CESA (Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent) test mayb tricky.

I am big with waist 38. But I wear L size BCD generally. XL size is too big for me and the lining hurts my neck like a saw.
Wetsuit wise - I believe the fat under skin analogy is true. I never dive with wetsuit in Malaysia (only rash guard, or wear t-shirts + shorts)
I bring 2 kgs down, but that was after AOW peak performance buoyancy tuning.
But my air consumption is on the high side...still need improvement.
My CESA, yes it was not good looking. It took me a few tries.

Agree on the rental part but its always good to have your own equipment.
Weight part is not so accurate. More weight is to make you neuturally buoyant. It wont make it harder for you to move. But because he is bigger in size so that is the main thing contributing to it. But... that being said, with practice n streamlining there is no issue.
Next. CESA, is not about the consumed oxygen. Its about how you breath out when you fin upwards. Just whistle and slowly go up.

That's not too bad actually.. I've come across a lot of mat salleh divers that size and some of them are quite accomplished.

When you sign up for a course you have to fill a questionnaire like this - have a look to see the medical risks that concern diving: https://www.padi.com/sites/default/files/do...te%2520v201.pdf

Ayam is fat and is interested to get open water. Any risk or cannot take at all?

Able to swim tho

Able to swim + fat, you'll be better off compared to fit + unable to swim. Though i agree with evan, you should be more conservative if you're far off the bell curve. Being overweight and beyond is associated with having less functional capacity in general, and thus having less ability to deal with the stresses of diving. It's also related to higher rates of related problems like diabetes and heart disease, which are known to complicate diving. Excluding those, it is controversial as to whether being overweight increases risk of decompression illness, since there is lack of data. The farther you are from the norm the riskier you are.

I'll add that scuba diving might give you motivation to get fitter.. For me it was one of the main reasons i started strength training!

For a sport where you need to show a lot of body, you need to have a lot of body to show first. lol

Hi, I will be going Redang (for the first time) next month for 3 day 2 night.

Will be staying at Redang Mutiara Beach Resort.

I understand that the resort located at remote area with only 1 dive center next to it (Sea Monkey).

Just want to know any recommended dive spot (I'm qualified for AOW) for Redang and roughly how many dive can be squeezed into my limited schedule.

As far as i know they are offering 4 dives and 7 dives package, with option for add-on $$/per dive.

4 sounds about right...scuba diving for us are meant to be recreational...if you squeeze too many dives in it will turn to be a tired trip.

Check with Seamonkey for the dive boat / island ferry schedule to see how many dives you can potentially do.

I was a new diver when I went to Redang so i don't remember much about the diving. The island itself was nice though.

Planning to do diving @ KK at month of May. Is that a good reason to go? Say from 26 May onwards. Any PADI available near to city centre? Or I need to travel to those island by myself to enquire for diving courses? Appreciate if otai2 here can enlighten me.

KK is suitable for diving all year round, but best you check with the dive shop. Book ahead and ask your questions.
in KK there is a row of dive shop by the sea at Wisma Sabah. I went for a day trip (3 dives) with scuba junkie last time during September. Sea condition is fine, visibility so-so since it is so close to city.
After you went in early morning to their office, everyone will walk for about 5-10 minutes to the jetty. Gears are ready on board/jetty.
Then the boat will go out and do your dive, lunch at one of the island (and stamp/pre-stamp your log book if you want), dive again, back to city.
If you have nothing stored at their office, you're dismissed. Very easy.

Its very different ... theory if u plan to complete in lake.
Like colouring is magenta when u going deeper instead of red for seawater, u going for freshwater, tends to be less buoyant.
It can be altitude dive as well depend on the lake situated. And u need more knowledge.
More hazard such as leaf, underwater plants, creatures all different, make sure your instructor have knife when going down. more tentative in entanglement if u go to the lake where plants and species are crowded.

Usually people go train in pool > seawater only then go freshwater. Or seawater > fresh water.
But in some desperate case only terbalik. Hope the fresh water dont ruin your first diving experiences.

hahhahah... doh.gif hahahah
better go try Tasik Bera and Tasik Kenyir.
Dove there last year.. at least some thing to see... was trying to locate the giant fish tat famous for sinking boat. Too bad it hangs out in shallow water more. Only spot once when head home on the boat. It was dangerous dive, dont bring too many stuff in, vegetation and entanglement is very real. Muddy bottom like trying to eat u ... not really enjoying it... but its better that tractor tyres laugh.gif
