if an offer came in.. say 1 year contract in stavanger
should go or not? thanks in advance for the advise

I would say it will depend on the package that the company offered you VS current package VS living cost over there.

Next year looked like the year that drilling activities will pick up again and that may still continue but I'm worried too.

Heard from my friend, Shell and Murphy will start their deepwater campaign next year. But not sure short or long program.

Morning everyone! I'm studying applied geology and going for industrial training next semester. Let's say I'm given a choice of working at CGG and Petra Energy, which one is a better choice for me?
As for CGG, i heard from my senior that they would probably take you as a full time after the internship as they will train you during the internship. I will be doing seismic processing at CGG, according to my lecturer if you work as a full timer you will probably  not getting the chance to transfer to other department and will be facing computer all the time to process the data.
Working at offshore is my dream, is Petra a better choice? Glad to hear any opinions...
*
Go for CGG. Related to your study.
I ahve a friend doing seismic processing and she is currently onboard seismic vessel.(*not with CGG)

QUOTE(Kaerna @ Dec 10 2018, 03:58 PM)
Guys any drilling rig which their contract is due to expire in mid 2019? I saw a 6 months vacancy for a drilling rig from a recruitment company but the recruiter doesn't seem too keen to share the company details or want to look into my application. I'm thinking of finding and applying directly with the company.

----MAYBE-----

Seadrill said Petronas recently awarded the West Carina drillship a two-well contract in Malaysia starting in December 2018 for two wells, adding approximately $29 million in backlog. The contract is expected to end in May 2019.

Parker Drilling has filed for bankruptcy https://wolfstreet.com/2018/12/12/oil-bust-...ing-bankruptcy/

Guess we're going to see more companies go to the wall, hear that there's a lot of talk about Weatherford.
*
We'll see more M&A in future....

- Ensco with Rowan
- Transocean purchaed Ocean Rig
- Borr is cash rich, shopping and reactivate rigs w/o contract.

Maybe other drillers will follow, Noble Drilling, Diamond Offshore...

Yup, cut higher than 30%.

Yea, I am aware of the career path too. In fact there actually are opportunities for Malaysian upstream staffs to go for offshore assignments (not only engineers, also for technician level too, since they have good experience with brownfield offshore facilities)

Commitment is at OK level I guess, however I do have a house mortgage, car loan, ASB loans, and life + family medical insurance. Taking a big paycut will definitely change my lifestyle quite a bit LOL. However, seeing that several of my colleagues (one permanent engineer and another offshore supervisor) getting oversea assignments recently really make me considering my options. Awesome career opportunities!

My personal opinion, if you already longtime with contract basis and have good networking (well known to other operators), you can continue with contract. There still be competition but good connections will push you infront.

If you're new/young - having Exxonmobil in your resume will push you further as well. Also, you will be part of team that will involve in improving and implementing new standard/procedures of company.

The lifesytles can be adjusted and adapted, I assume as long as you dont have high commitment under you belt that cannot be eliminated, e.g. Mortgage, PL, Credit Cards. (But beware of peer influence biggrin.gif )

Opportunity is not only working offshore but oversea assingments - relocate with family package biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

-my personal opinion-

Even MMHE maked a RM120mil loss! https://www.thestar.com.my/business/busines...rm122m-in-fy18/

Sapura, Bumi Armada, Velesto, MMHE...all our oil and gas titans are loss-making despite the oil market recovery in 2018. What gives?

Velesto especially drilling division is well taken care of by MPM. Priority to local company...

Besides cost saving factor, what other causes that company (e.g. epcic, drilling, fpso, etc) hired “boat people” for upper level position?

- local not qualified? - which I dont think so
- local doesn’t want to take responsibility?
- high responsibility vs salary package not attractive?
- no push from client to increase/prioritise local content (in contract and execution)?
- client doesn’t have confidence in local talent/capabilities?
