hey evryone....im going to new zealand next year. my family is in the process of applying for PR and we wud get it most probably by april or may next year. im entering the july intake for nz unis
rite now i'm having a slight dillemma as to wic uni to go to
i am aware of the top 4 however i still havent made up my mind
i plan to undertake a Bachelor of commerce in marketing and/or management and possibly a double degree in arts as well
based on my preferences i hav singled out vic uni wellington, canterbury n auckland
between these 3 wic will be the best choice? or izzit a case of closing ur eyes n pick any one of those randomly?
also i wud like to know wic uni among those three has the most flexible degree system, coz im afraid i cant change my subjects if im not interested in it.

hope to hear from ppl alredi in the top 4...

oww yeah, i forgot to mention otago, although im not reli keen to go there due to the small size of dunedin(i prefer a city environment)

University of Auckland, their new business school is impressive ask lilredridinghood, he came and visit before, he is currently in victoria university.
I know quite a number of friends doing conjoint and some of them switch from 1 degree to another, so I can say that it is quite flexible.

I'm currently in AUT, which our business school just received the "best business educator in NZ" by VERO. It is kinda new university, but if u're keen on doing more practical stuff, AUT seems to be a good choice as well . We're rank 2nd on finance and accounting research in NZ as well
But in terms of the degrees offered in AUT, it is rather limited

hahahaha, on a serious note, if you are looking to have a busier lifestyle and NZ is the only option, try to get to Auckland Uni or AUT, as Wellington, although is the capital city of NZ, is not exactly the busiest place. Whereas at Auckland, still quiet though, but much better than Wellington. Not to mention, much more Asians hence less chances of you getting homesick as it is not always easy to hang out with a Kiwi guy/gal, making friends is easy though.

Even though I was impressed at Auckland Uni's new business school, I have never regretted choosing Wellington as my destination. As some Kiwis would say, Auckland is not like other NZ states and the people there are less friendly as compared to the others. Some of my Kiwi friends even said that some Aucklanders are stuck up. However, it is not a secret that New Zealanders hate Auckland, due to various reasons. Although I do notice that Aucklanders aren't as friendly as the Wellingtonians, I recently met a couple of AUT students who came to Wellington last Friday for a drink, they are quite alright to be honest. I guess the unfriendliness is due to the large Asian population over there.

Other than that, Vic has a very good reputation of its commerce and administration faculty, do tell me what major are you looking forward to do and I shall comment about the lecturers.

Do look at my previous long post, if you wish to know more about NZ education

Then Vic should be ideal for you, I must say it is a much livelier than Perth or Adelaide. I still feel bored at times though, but I must say that it is the difference between the lifestyle between Malaysians and Kiwis. We Malaysians are generally nocturnal creatures whereas Kiwis stay home at night if they are not drinking at the bars.

I'm a marketing major student, so I'll only comment mainly on marketing

For marketing, I've met some very good lecturers here, but I will only be here for a year, so I'm graduating soon, I hope. Kate Dallenbach for MARK202, which is a compulsory paper for marketing major is an extremely helpful lecturer, Peter November for MARK101 as well as Janet Carruthers for MARK211, etc. However there are some lousy lecturers as well, boring or unprepared. I'm having one of the lousiest lecturers in Vic for my 300 level marketing core paper.

Even with the lousiest lecturers, one can still get very good marks for marketing as it is not a theory based paper. I noticed that Malaysian students may find it hard to adapt into the Kiwi way as the tutors and lecturers are generally flexible with answers and questions. We Malaysians may struggle in that sense as there are not many theory based questions, the hardest part is to present your idea to the class as one may be over self conscious over his/her English and is less expressive as compared to the Kiwis. However, you may gradually find that although there are some arses among the Kiwis, the majority will still accept an international student's thought and the Kiwis' ideas are usually very superficial.

That's one of our stronger points. As Asian students, we are sometimes too conscious over our own ideas, therefore are more analytical and will only present our own ideas when we think that they are good enough. Hence, we Asians usually get higher marks than the local Kiwis. However, be prepared to lose participation marks if you are going to keep that habit.

You may want to consider taking management, as there are a few good management lecturers in the university. Try getting Dai Gilbertson, the best lecturer that I have ever had. I had him for MGMT317, an assignment based course where we have to compete for places for the SIFE competition that is held annually. However, that's a 300 level paper, and I heard that the code may change next year, I do hope that you will get the opportunity to go under him. He should still be lecturing next semester in FCOM110(code may change) though, which is a compulsory subject for all commerce students. Moreover, he's the NZ's Olympic motivator and he has heaps of experience to share with us, as he is also working closely with the government to maintain the international relationship with other countries. He can even tell you a lot of things about the recent China NZ FTA.

Do not hesitate to ask me more questions ya? I'll even let you know which student hall to go to if you have intention to come to Vic

A bit on the sidelines, but "he"? *looks at lilredridinghood's profile and signature*

I know we have OtoBoku openly sold in Malaysia these days, but still......................................................

As for me, I love Auckland as it is. For once I'm in a place where it is the center of everything. The only problem is the bloody wind, and the fact every other corner is the himalaya's.

Apparently, some of the Kiwis would go to look for jobs in Aus as the pay there is higher. Besides that, the job market in NZ is very very bad according to some of my graduated Kiwi friends, I mean for Marketing la.

Some of them are still working in Burger Fuel(you'll know what is it when you come here) since graduating 3 months ago.

Since you are a PR, it won't be hard for you to get a job in Aus, just like how Malaysians can go to Singapore and work.

I feel inferior to be honest, but it's just the way we express ourselves. If we Malaysians are more expressive, there is no doubt that we can outperform the Kiwis in this sense - education wise la

But in terms of the work opportunity, I must say that when compare to Oz, the Kiwis are less discriminating, they do not look at your skin colour or status. Moreover, even an international student will be given a year's working permit. However, I'm not too keen on working in NZ, as the lifestyle is different, we are nocturnal beings remember? Our job would too require lots of communication, the Malaysian accent differs a lot from the Kiwi's, therefore some may have the perception that our English is bad. I do however had some Kiwi friends that said that my English is good, not a bad thing, but not a good thing either, it shows that how ignorant are they about our spoken English, not to mention written English.

I must also stress that although English may not be our 1st language and our vocabulary is limited. Our grammar and spelling is however much better than theirs. Some don't even understand when one of my malaysian friends told them that, "this semester is very taxing".

Don't be discourage over it, since you're a PR, it should be easier. Like me, you may change your thoughts about staying back at NZ to work.

The NZ job market is very small. Job hunting is tough in all fields except for a few like engineering, accounting, medicine. However, if you're willing (and can afford) to be patient, it is possible to find a job. Patience is the key though, and a willingness to suck it up working in McDonald's or retail till you find that permanent full-time job. The very last thing you should do is to sit on your butt doing nothing while looking for a job.

The best thing you can do to boost your employability is to work while studying. Gain as much work experience as possible. Does far more for your CV than a string of As.
