Well i dont need a huge city but at the same time i want to live in a place with nearby amenities and things like cinemas and bars. in australian terms, im not looking for a melbourne, but an adelaide. based on ur opinion it looks like wellington is something like adelaide. I want to live in a city but not too big to the point it overwhelms u.
good to hear that vic has a good reputation. im planning to do a major in marketing and international business. izit ok in vic uni?
btw are u a commerce student as well? wad major?
thx again for the info...
Then Vic should be ideal for you, I must say it is a much livelier than Perth or Adelaide. I still feel bored at times though, but I must say that it is the difference between the lifestyle between Malaysians and Kiwis. We Malaysians are generally nocturnal creatures whereas Kiwis stay home at night if they are not drinking at the bars.
I'm a marketing major student, so I'll only comment mainly on marketing
For marketing, I've met some very good lecturers here, but I will only be here for a year, so I'm graduating soon, I hope. Kate Dallenbach for MARK202, which is a compulsory paper for marketing major is an extremely helpful lecturer, Peter November for MARK101 as well as Janet Carruthers for MARK211, etc. However there are some lousy lecturers as well, boring or unprepared. I'm having one of the lousiest lecturers in Vic for my 300 level marketing core paper.
Even with the lousiest lecturers, one can still get very good marks for marketing as it is not a theory based paper. I noticed that Malaysian students may find it hard to adapt into the Kiwi way as the tutors and lecturers are generally flexible with answers and questions. We Malaysians may struggle in that sense as there are not many theory based questions, the hardest part is to present your idea to the class as one may be over self conscious over his/her English and is less expressive as compared to the Kiwis. However, you may gradually find that although there are some arses among the Kiwis, the majority will still accept an international student's thought and the Kiwis' ideas are usually very superficial.
That's one of our stronger points. As Asian students, we are sometimes too conscious over our own ideas, therefore are more analytical and will only present our own ideas when we think that they are good enough. Hence, we Asians usually get higher marks than the local Kiwis. However, be prepared to lose participation marks if you are going to keep that habit.
You may want to consider taking management, as there are a few good management lecturers in the university. Try getting Dai Gilbertson, the best lecturer that I have ever had. I had him for MGMT317, an assignment based course where we have to compete for places for the SIFE competition that is held annually. However, that's a 300 level paper, and I heard that the code may change next year, I do hope that you will get the opportunity to go under him. He should still be lecturing next semester in FCOM110(code may change) though, which is a compulsory subject for all commerce students. Moreover, he's the NZ's Olympic motivator and he has heaps of experience to share with us, as he is also working closely with the government to maintain the international relationship with other countries. He can even tell you a lot of things about the recent China NZ FTA.
Do not hesitate to ask me more questions ya? I'll even let you know which student hall to go to if you have intention to come to Vic
